A secondhand surface with a pen? You don’t have to buy the Microsoft pen. I use a Bamboo one.

Or an old Samsung Galaxy Active Tab 2.

I recently bought a Nukeproof Digger. It has been great. It is my 3rd cx/gravel type bike so I have some experience. It was either going to be that or a Camino. I liked the Trig but wanted 700c wheels.

So I would heartily recommend the Digger.

If I’d had had the cash though I would have gone steel or ti.

I’m a touch over 6′ and my standard Soloist is fine for me. Only gripe is the low front door. Sleep with your head away from the door as is gives more height at the foot end.

    Elan is great too.

I’ve just picked up an elderly 810 for £50. Loaded a free map onto a SD card and it’s been great. Battery good, seems robust, easy to navigate. Connects to my phone via Bluetooth so never need to plug in to transfer routes to it. No complaints.

Perhaps you need to take a deeper dive into the rules. The Open University run an Mornington Crescent online course led by leading gamers which gives you a proper grounding in things. They do seem to focus on the modern rules though, so some research in the library archives by yourself may be needed.

Ah dammit. Rickmansworth and I’m out.

Ah now, this could be contentious, but seeing as we’re on the revised ’67 ruleset, I’m playing Tower Hill.

Had this been under the 1940-45 wartime revision i would have, of course, played Mark Lane.

Unless we’ve enacted the Circle and District exemption? Sorry I’m not near my library so can’t refer to the technical guidance.

Happened to me. You need an enzymee cleaner like Simple Solution (available in large pet shops).

I removed the rear bench seat. Cut the affected section of carpet out. Cleaned it thoroughly, then let to soak in Simple Solution.

Waitied for it to dry and then stuck the underseat carpet section back in using carpet tape or duct tape.

Did the job but it was a right pain!

    Good luck.

Now… I went to Lidl on the weekend and bought a pair of these:

    https://www.lidl.co.uk/p/cycling-gear/crivit-sports-glasses-with-photochromic-lenses/p62498

The totally frameless ones. The nose is so narrow I can’t wear them. And I don’t have a particularly fat nose! Apart from teh fact they don’t fit me, they’re really well made. In fact I also bought the half frame pair that I intend to keep.

So if you want I’d be happy to send you up my unwearable pair. Just PM me your name and address and I’ll send them. If you could pop some money into your local mountain/lowland rescue or air ambulance charitable fund I’d appreciate it too…

My wife shed her ex-married surname and took mine. To get over the problem of her daughter having a different surname we changed her surname by deed poll to be double barrelled with my name (and now also her Mum’s) and her Dad’s name. Obviously with her Dad’s agreement.

It also helped when I had to show that I was guardian to my step-daughter as I had shared at least part of her surname.

I used to have one. Sold it after I sold the bike it sat on. Now awaiting the new 60mm version promised (via email from Redshift) this summer to fit to the new bike. They’re a real benefit to me and my aching old bones!

I did a decade of spds. When i started doing bikepacking i got fed up having to buy seperate expensive spd boots for winter camps. So i went partially flat pedals and found that technology had moved on. Pedals were grippy amnd shoes were sticky. And i could walk into the pub after putting up the tent without sounding like i had hooves. And they work really well for the bike parks too and i can go to the shops in my Five Tens. So i ride flats exclusively now. Really can’t find a downside.

I tend to stick stuff on teh bike, but sometimes I need a rucksack and when I do I use this:

    OMM Classic 25

It’s light and has decent hip belt to take the weight (rather than your shoulders).

I actually quite like Radio 3. Better than Classic fm. But Alexznder Armstrong is quite good on Cfm. Can’t do R1, music is ok but presenters sound like morons. Greatest Hits plays music that should have been retired from circulation yeats ago. There’s a local station near me called Kane FM which is pretty good. Also available online. Dance based. Check them out!

I’ve done several 70+ mile, 6000ft ascent bikepacking rides on my Orbea Rise with the piggyback battery. I’m always a bit nervous about running out and eek the power out so invariably I get home with over 30% left in the tank! It all depends on how fit you are, how hilly it is, and how much you rely on the power. Quite often I ride the first 15-20 miles without assist. I was considering doing the Dirt Dash on it next year (first time I did it was on a singlespeed ffs – thanks Long Covid!). The good thing about a lighter ebike like the Levo and Rise is that if you do run out it can still be ridden without too much pain for the last bit home. I just need to work out a way to hotwire a kettle and toastie maker to the battery and it would be the perfect bikepacking machine…

I pretty much gave up buying carby snacks a few years back, but recently needed something light and well packaged for a multi-day hike. Ended up with RawVelo bars as they seemed free from the usual additives. Happy to say they were very tasty too!!

Hi TJ, have you ever thought of starting regular meditation practice? An app like Headapace or Calm can teach you the basics and encourage you to stick with it. It has really helped me and my daughter.

    Best of luck fella.

Doing the same thing repeatedly for decades will become boring. I’m 50 nearly and have been mtbing since i was 19. Some days i think i should find something different to do.

I try to mix it up with gravel, city riding, and longer trips. TBH a few health issues causing general daily discomfort has made the thought of injury from the riskier stuff i used to ride very unwelcome. So i find myself avoiding the bigger features (which means i lose my confidence etc.). Plus I’ve known people really screw themselves being weekend warriors. In fact one guy I knew died from a fairly small jump gone wrong.

So yeah, I have lost the love. Just can’t think of what else to do. Cookery? Stamp collection? Twitching?

I have 20-30 active projects at any one time. I rely on ON every day as a kind of scrapbook/aide memoire. I dump note, photos, screenshots, voicenotes, links (external and Sharepoint), and files onto each project page.

    I feel your pain OP!

One thing that helped me, is having the Kindle app on the front page of my phone. And putting the other apps and chrome on other pages. This way I’m more tempted to hit the Kindle app and read two or three pages of my book. However this only works if you’ve got a good book on the go!

The last few winters I’ve used Hot Hands disposable foot warmers. Total game changer for me. I use them when working outdoors too. About 80p a pop if you buy 20 at a time. They last for hours!

Not sure if they dry quicker but they heat the room as they’re drying as the hot air is dry that comes out.

Sorry for the delayed response! Nope never fitted a rack. Tend ti ride with a rucksack, although Decathlon had a funky courier bag that attaches to the handlebars that I quite like the look of.

I’ve got that exact Halfords one and it is very good.

Actually looks ok too, unlike the Decathlon/Bromptons.

Fitted some cheap Zefal mudguards for about £15.

Regular spend 30-40 mins on it around London.

You volunteer for the crappier assignments at work just because they’re 30 mins from a trail centre, and you turn down any lucrative contracts that prevent you arriving in good time for the Thursday night ride…

Use an old android phone and tether it to your mobile of you need connection.

Use Komoot for maps and satnav. Or OS app for the detail.

    Works a treat.

Lovely job! I’ve had my M10 for about 3 weeks now and love it. Similar position to you in that I bought it due to health issues but I can honestly say it’s one of the best bikes I’ve ever ridden both downhill and up!

I tried a full-fat before settling on the Rise and I’ve not looked back. I done 5 hour rides and still had a couple of bars left. It’s about 19kg on the scales and doesn’t mind leaving the ground when asked. I bought the piggyback battery too for really long trips but haven’t needed to fit it yet.

Just writing this is making want to nip out on it now… Back in a bit.

His first book is the best book I’ve read in years. Fabulous. Not hippy, unless you are full-gammon.

I found myself referring to it the other day when explaining to a friend the difference between ‘trespass’ and ‘aggravated trespass’. An the very fact that we are riding on private land could be taken as ‘intimidation’ and therefore the criminal offence of ‘aggravated trespass’.

Cut and paste job below from Hayes, Nick. The Book of Trespass (pp. 19-20). Bloomsbury Publishing.

The Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 introduced criteria to arrest people for the newly invented crime of ‘aggravated trespass’.

The lawyers define ‘aggravated’ in their own breezy way as ‘any circumstance attending the commission of a crime or tort which increases its guilt or enormity or adds to its injurious consequences’. A hidden knife would be aggravated assault; and from 1994, a hidden intention had the same effect. Section 61 of the Act legislated that a police officer could remove two or more people from any private land, if they have met for a common purpose. That’s for the ramblers. Section 63 criminalises any gathering of twenty people or more who meet to dance to amplified music. That’s for the ravers. Section 68 criminalises the intimidation, deterrence, obstruction and disruption of lawful activities on land, which turns all protest on land not owned by the protesters into an illegal activity.

At the time, this was primarily to restrict the hunt saboteurs, but is used in the vast majority of protests of all flavours, from fracking, to animal rights, to war. Your right to protest is secured by Articles 10 and 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights, but for the last twenty years, if you do it anywhere but your back garden or a highway, you can be arrested and sent to jail.

On top of this, since 2014, a common ruling has inserted the phrase ‘additional conduct’. If you are trespassing on land and engaging in any additional conduct, literally anything, it can now be classed as intimidation. In the words of the Crown Prosecution website: There is no requirement that the additional conduct should itself be a crime, so activities such as playing a musical instrument or taking a photograph could fall within anything. What limits the scope of anything is the intention that must accompany it: the intention to obstruct, disrupt or deter by intimidating. In short, if you are doing something that is not illegal (photography, dancing, playing the flute), while doing something that is not criminal (trespassing) you can be automatically arrested, and liable to six months in prison and a level-four fine. In this equation, two rights combine and somehow make a wrong.
