OP here with an update for those interested.

I bought a pair of five ten Maltese falcons (spd compatable) so I had a get out of jail card if I didn’t enjoy riding flats.
Went for 15k/500m spin on my local bike trail centre and smashed the **** out of a load of PB’s on strava

Thanks again for all the replies.

    Just to confirm,
Maltese falcons are a bad bet with the cleat cover left on.
The sole on the freeriders or equivalent is better for riding flats.

OP here, Wow ok loads to process there already.

    Some replies.

I’m ok in the air, been racing enduro’s for 3 years with fitness holding me back more than skill.
I don’t think I can bunny hop without spd’s and wheelies and manuals are only basic. I suppose being clipped in always held me back from practicing them more.

I’m really good at pumping, cornering, reading lines, tech decent etc but it’s the very basic skills I’ve become weak at.
I bought cheap wellgo V8 copies and had an old pair of indoor football runners but it all felt wrong (wellgo are huge in terms of profile)

I’m going to order five ten Maltese falcons so I can install cleats once I’ve improved my skills. I’ve also bought Nukeproof neutron pedals for the lower profile than the wellgo’s.

I’m committed to giving flats a go for the winter and see where that takes me.

Get one, brilliant bit of kit.
I use mine for practice days of Enduro race weekends.
Good to watch the footage back and make line decisions. If anything decent I’ll keep otherwise I delete after the weekend.

I’ve had 2, a standard and now a stealth and never had one single issue. It’s been hammered in 2 Irish wet winters and used in 15 Enduro race weekends without fault.

Wouldn’t look at anything else tbh.

I love my parachute. I sent a bell 2r back as its was a terrible fit and looked ridiculous on my head.
I have an IXS trial lid for most rides and take the chute out for Enduro races or anything sketchy.

Shitshifter died last Sep on me. Canyon have being lying since then on a regulated basis with made up delivery dates, bull stories about x,y and z.

Still no ’16 unit, I’m on the list, they are in Germany bla bla bla. I’m going down the legal route with them now.
Defo have a read of the PB thread, it’s long but worth it for an honest view on how bad things are at Canyon.

    Anyone?

Sad news, met the guy at the Emerald enduro this year, nice guy.
His skills videos are some of the best out there and his knowledge and insight into Enduro style racing is second to none. Hopefully we still see him doing the media stuff.

@beano thanks for that, very useful.
@sofaboy so simple when you explain it like that, I’ll give it a try when I get home from work.

    @beano68

Can you explain how? I’m not mad on the double D ring myself. How easy is it to change the chin strap?

On topic, I tried both sizes in the bell. The small was too small and the large was like a beachball on my head. I ordered a parachute in the large and it fits perfectly. Delighted with it apart from the chin strap.

Once I tell you this you will never look back…

Avon skin so soft dry oil.

It’s applied as a dry oil moisturiser so the midge can’t actually bite through that layer and it has citronella which they hate also. It’s a well know secret in special forces and armies that operate in midge zones. Google it.

Using it for years and barely get bitten, use to be tormented by them. Deet and all the other stuff just never worked for me.

I’m 5″8 with a 30″ inside leg and always like a small cockpit. I spent an hour last night going over the geometry of the 2012 canyon strive I have with the geo of the Capra. Everything says size small to me but then almost all advice on her and the “other” site says to size up to a medium.

@aroche that’s good to know thanks.

    @amplebrew
will have a look now thanks.

Anyone Of the lunchtime gang have an other options?

Are you asking would a 5’3 rider get away with a canyon nerve size small?

I’m 5’8 and ride a small nerve AL+, the stand over height is poor and touching my plums. Cockpit size is fine for me all be it a little cramped. In fact it would be considered very cramped compared to other bikes I have tried recently. Yeti/SC bronson/nomad and Giant trance.

I used it when I got my bike last year. Great app, easy to use but I’m not totally sold on how accurate it was.
I followed the settings for 6 months until a semi pro rider I got chatting to on a trail changed my settings after some discussion. My bike felt completely different and I blasted most of my previous Stravas from then on.

From my experience take 10-20 PSI off what the app recommends and start from there adding or subtracting air as required.

Maxxis certainly know how to to confuse with all their compounds and protection stuff.
So I’m looking for HR2 3c EXO as the best solution, anyone have a link to one online?
They appear to be sold out of that type on CRC.

No idea but in the 2 months since going tubeless I’ve had to refill the stans 3 times and pump it up before and after every ride. The magic mary on the front went up first time and I haven’t touched it since.

Thanks Tomaso just reading exactly that in the internet.
Is the 3C better again than the 42a do you know?

    sparrowcar

Anyone? Reckon I’ll just go with a HR2 as a safe bet.

ride somewhere muddy, or gritty, and you might well need to change pads during the ride.
I remember reading about a race at Swinley when the weather was bad, some people went through all their spare pads during the race and then had to give up before the end due to having no spares left. The grit at Swinley is evil.

Ha Ha, I live in Ireland. We have 4-5 hours of summer a year :)
I’m surprised by that to be honest, maybe I don’t use my brakes enough 8)

    sparrowcar
    Free Member

In all the years I’m biking I’ve never known anyone who’s needed to change brake pads on the trail.
Surely that would mean you are badly prepared and don’t maintain your bike correctly?

    sparrowcar

Pads were new a month ago so it’s not them.
The brakes were blead a few months ago and just seem to loose lever strength as the day went on. The lever ended up touching the bar towards the end of the day. Also the noise of them permanently is so tiring.

I would safely assume that 95%+ of sales in Liverpool are from people passing through or tourists who might not be aware of the boycott or it’s of no immediate interest to them.

Yep that’s what I though myself, better to be safe than sorry for a little extra weight. Thanks

No probably nothing rougher but more continuously and harder during the races. I’m no Danny Hart or anything but I will defo be pushing harder than a normal spin if you know what I mean.

I bought the Evoc CC 10L after this thread and some research and I’m delighted with it. Super little bag and it’s huge for 10L. I’ve been a climber and backpacker for years so maybe I’m use to packing well but I could do a summer overnight with a bag this size :D

It’s more than enough for me and my spins. I generally carry the following and it all fits comfortably with spare room.

    -Water 2L platypus
    -Shock pump
    -mini pump
    -tube
    -multitool
    -phone
    -car key
-rain jacket (light mountain hardwear jacket)
    -banana
    -snack bar
I haven’t been out long enough to bring a sandwich yet but it will fit with space still available.

I bought this one in blue as it was the cheapest including delivery to Ireland.

    So far so good.

I was about to give out to butlerjamesp for not being helpful but actually having read your post a few times it makes no sense to me either.

I don’t know what you mean by mesh either. Can you try and explain again?

    OP here,

I bought a pair of Revision bullet ants after Deveron’s suggestion. Arrived this morning €30 delivered to Dublin so happy out. So far all my breathing issues are gone and they look like a super bit of kit.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Ahh balls, now I’m confused again.
I intended using the Evoc CC for some gravity enduro races, you’re making me think it won’t fit all I need.

More research needed, I’ll need a bigger teapot for tonight :)

I’m not the OP but having read other threads I’ve decided to pull the trigger on a Evoc CC 10L.
Looks like a super bit of kit, anyone own one?

I already said in my previous post it’s a Spesh Tactic 2 trail helmet.

Some great suggestions to research later thanks.

It’s to be worn with a Spesh tactic II trail helmet but the helmet isn’t the issue.
I try the goggles on without and basically it seems like the bridge of my nose is too close to my eyes.
When I put the goggles on above/off my nose then my eyes end up at the bottom of the goggles and most of the remaining goggles are covering my forehead.

I’m living in Dublin and goggle selections in the shops over here are very poor for trying on sizes.

I’ve done 2 races now and many days out and no dropped chain.
I suppose it’s the skill of rider you are, I tend not to hit anything that could cause my chain to drop.

Recently went 1×10 from 3×10 and have to say I’m so impressed I’ll never go back.
I went 30t starting off as I do a fair bit of climbing and fitness is still questionable.

I have yet to run out of chainring on any downhill part yet so no need to change just yet.
I’ve no chain guide but might put one on for the Gravity enduro season over here.
Great set up and won’t look back!

If financial issue aren’t a problem would you consider taking a couple of weeks off and heading with the bike to the Canaries or somewhere similar and just ride. It might just give you a kick start to get going again.

You aren’t alone, many people including myself have been where you are.
Time to look in the mirror and decide that no more are you going to let this life pass you by..your time is now so get out there and live it.

P.S. get a puppy, nothing like a puppy to keep your mind occupied and get you out and about. You basically end up too busy to be depressed :D
