See if your local motorbike placey has some. Comes in larger quantities at cheaper prices than if buying bike specific even though it’s the same stuff.

Cheers for that, missed the link, appeared while I was posting. I’ll blame my slow fingers.

Edit: Just read the Link, didn’t realise it was all those years ago (2003!). Shame about the internal feud. Oh well.

My telly’s been confiscated after watching the Tour De France and been permanently tuned to NCIS. I dislike NCIS. A lot.

Wasn’t Lester Haines (of El Reg special projects and one time deputy Reg Editor – I think) one of the guys behind the Rockall Times? And didn’t they actually mount an expedition to Rockall around 2005/6? Anyone with a better memory than me? Didn’t realise Rockall Times had been threatened with litigation.

Never thought there’d be soo many people from Aberdeen/area hanging about on this forum.

Aberdeen the city seems to be getting a bit of a kicking… I like to think of it as quirky in a very special sort of a way. An acquired taste. Can second Bike Remedy in Stonehaven as a good place to take your bike.

Horses for courses init. Looking for city life got to be Edinburgh. On the other hand Aberdonians looking for city life head off to Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt even that there London (basically it’s quicker and Easier to get to a European city than London). Oh and the riding around Aberdeen is beautiful. Up here it really is empty. Loads of quite back roads leading up onto forest trails etc etc. Personally I like Aberdeen, though more despite the city than because of it. Jonathan Meads did a great show programme about Scotland one of which featured Aberdeen. Friendly people too. Dee Valley is nice.

Wuala.com? Swiss company (they make those Lacie external drives), Swiss servers (I think), very secure, shows up as a drive on your file system, plays beautifully with Android, can be accessed remotely, will sync files or just act like another storage device/drive.

It’s worth a listen and isn’t about “us and them” and more about an internalised discourse that is emerging around transport in the built environment. Although they do enter into a discussion around an emerging moral hierarchy with the car at the bottom, it is only in reference to movement within London (ie a large urban environment). More interesting is the discussion about the understood difference between the (positive) moral value of cycling vs the (perceived) immorality of cyclists (Taylor quoting Howard Jacobson is worth a chuckle).

Hi trail rat, not quite sure what the etiquette is here – but I’m part of a project working with vulnerable adults in Aberdeen and one of the things we do is supply firewood. Can supply as much or as little seasoned (3 years+ at the moment) dry (less than 25% moisture) split firewood. Delivery is per cubic metre (1 tonnne) mixed hard and soft wood. At the moment much of it is beech. Oh and significantly cheaper than your quote above, and we’ll deliver free if your in/near Aberdeen. Email tacoffice@googlemail.com if your interested.

Tang asked whether you can report someone. Now I’m sure many people will just shrug their shoulders and say “what’s the point, nobody listens”, but enough people making a complaint has to make some kind of an impact sooner or later. Having reported someone for driving me off the road on a tiny lane I was really surprised by how helpful the police were. For one the civilian support worker who took my complaint encouraged me – turns out she also rides a bike. And yes the police did follow it right through.

Projects video above is appalling, just about every car that passes him is in violation of one piece of statute or another.

Best end to end encryption is with Wuala (the cloud storage arm of Swiss storage makers Lacie). If you lose your password they can’t recover it (which means they can’t access your data on anyones behalf). Their app is brilliant and when running appears as a drive. Works a lot better than dropbox. I also use Spideroak, similarly strong end to end encryption. Both have great sync and share functionality and are fairly customisable.

I have to admit that I have once or twice (no more mind) gone into a modest sized chain named after a well known Scottish city to try on clothes (always with the intention of buying in the store as I do think it is quite dishonest of customers otherwise). However, having met with consistently indifferent customer service I went home and bought the stuff online. And by indifferent I mean staff who had to be begged for service – and no it wasn’t busy.

At the same store I did ask them to build up a bike for me which I thought I might buy but probably wouldn’t. Did I feel guilty – nope as I had bought two bikes from them in the space of two years.

Good customer service – after much procrastination (ie having asked questions, taken up Cy’s time, saying I did want one, work catching up, not actually placing the order for the best part of a week) I bought a bike from Cotic last week should be here on Friday.

Never heard of Tommy Goodwin till today. Absolutely amazing. Very interested in reading what you have to say about the year record DavidB (when’s the book out?), where there many attempts on it in the twenties and thirties or did TG just set out to ride as far as he could?

Regarding Mallory and everest – BBC journos get very little time to put a story together so not surprising there are so many errors on the BBC website.

Square One on George Street, GPH builders merchants out in Inverurie, Flemings in Banchory is alright, Rembrand Timber for a door (or Jewsons or Fleming/Buildbase]. Hope that helps. B&Q is pretty pricy. I usually go to Cordiners in Torry for anything timberish – usually have the best prices and are friendly/helpful with ignorant non-trade joe public who don’t quite know what they’re looking for – like me.

Here you go, more naughtiness from big people who should know better: UK kids’ art project is ‘biggest copyright blag ever’ – photographer, same thing as Brandts reporting up top but this time with images and they’re claiming intellectual rights. Send them to the naughty step at once.

I’m a little concerned that even cyclists seem to be becoming blase about being hit by vehicles. That the police don’t take the matter seriously is of course concerning but surely as road users we also have a duty to lobby for better, safer access.

My personal experience with being run off the road and threatened was the police were willing to pursue the case as a crime though I just wanted the guy to be ‘spoken to’ (no damage to bike or myself) – which the police duly did.

They seem to be like the proverbial Marmite. You either love ’em or not… And their customer services is inconsistent at the least. Personally the one occasion that I ordered from them they billed me once and sent the item twice!

If you want end to end encryption (from a reputable company) Spideroak and Wuala are both great. Use both (personally and professionally), the Wuala one is especially good as you can increase your free allowance by 10gb for each Lacie disk that you buy. Both Wuala and Spideroak function better than Dropbox IMHO.

Got a bell on my “other” bike, use it regularly – am roundly ignored, think I need a louder one. Have thought about a buzzer but don’t want to startle anyone. I usually start ringing it from upto 100m away. Always have to accompany it with a friendly “hello”.

My mum regular takes my elder daughter swimming in the sea (North East Scotland) albeit in the summer and has done since she was three. My brother swam off Aberdeen beach for two years every day while at Uni – in a summer wetsuit. While my brothers friend went water skiing in only a pair of shorts at Christmas from Caterline (again North East Scotland) with my brother. I only swim in the Sea up here in the summer, wearing a 3mm longjohn. Try it and see, it’s surprisingly pleasent – but take precautions as above and don’t get out of your depth.

Lovely eggs from ducks though, and you won’t find a slug in your garden anywhere. (The OH keeps 3 domestic mallards and 2 Indian runners.)
