I see retro as pre-disc but everyone will have an idea of retro. Even in 15 years time modern frames wont be retro, I think the 1st MTB's are exactly that and as such are still liked for being the 1st of their kind, I cannot see modern mass produced bikes becoming retro.. for me the orinal marins, Klein's, Orange's and muddy fox are all retro from around 1992 and before

messiah – I have just done my wife;s circa 92 Marin, just finishin off a few bits. total cost for the bike and restoration £40 :) it's not a genuine rebuild but it is shiny and goes well. And I love to build bikes! it's all good fun!

forgot to say the HEL comes with fittings for 90% of brakes and they are re-useable. That said save yourself a wedge and just buy the goodridge hose only, you can re-use old fittings :) I upgraded my mono mini's to goodridge for £15 :)

try HEL.. as good as Goodridge imho but a lot cheaper.

As for performance, my understanding is yes it will improve, normal hose does not use a metal weave and as such can expand the hose, goodridge and HEL does not expant so you get better performance. Also they are more crash resistant.

    imho

true I just meant from the ones I have spoken to, a lot of them have brought the 1st cheap but nice bike they could afford off ebay regardless of sizing.. just the 1st nice thing their mates would like, I have had a couple happily say "yea it looked nice, but I will grow into it"

let me put it this way, If I see a kid who is 5ft on a 21" bling bike holding a can of white lightning… I will get very sus, that said I have met kids at Still woods on bikes too large for them, some of them buy whatever bargain they can find and dont care about the size.. it is normally the last thing on their mind when buying, they just want something to show off…. I do keep my eye out and have only seen 1 suspect bike, either a 223 or a 224 with boxxers ridden near rolls royce in Filton, some kid with no lid, could not ride it in a straight line and his mates had 20£ hack bikes.. he kept trying to pop a wheelie and managed 2cm…

    In Southmead, yes.

sad………….. yes there are some scrotes around Bristol on the whole they are fine if you treat them with respect, but labeling them all as theifs is rather sad.. god I used to be 13 with a nice cannondale and a muddy fox.. im glad people did not make an assumption

Sadly being thick is not a crime.. but I think far too many people see a kid on a bike and that's it.. theif, a lot of parents buy their kids nice bikes, after all Bristol has a LOT of places to ride (seen the latest dirt issue?) there are also a lot of jump spots around. I live in Patchway and have no doubt people think I stole my intense.. after all anyone in patchway is just a dole dosser right? I get a lot of stares, Assumption can be the mother of all ……….. ups

I agree with the post above, a DH bike is exactly that and you may not get to use it that much, anyhow most 5-6" travel AM bikes can handle most stuff in the uk but still pedal.. on that basis I would look at (Nomad, Orange 5, Remedy, Spicy, Cube Fritzz, Intense 6.6 / 5.5) One mate has a FIVE which he uses mostly for uplifts and foreign holidays, he keeps up with the DH guys.. ANother has a Nomad which is looking to be a perfect do anything bike.. light but long travel.

Thank you squire!! I may give that some thought and get some new bars and stem on there..

    Spankmonkey

how have you got a normal stem on what would have been threaded forks which would have been flush to the top of the HS?

Got the wheels and rear mech cleaned up, stripped them all down, now running very smooth!.. just need to get the gearing and brakes on and some new grips!

its my 30ft shed and will be knocked down in a few years to make way for an extension :) I used nitromorse, then sanded the frame to ensure the paint would take… I used plasticoat undercoat, then the pink main coat, finished off with the clear top coat… same on the forks and stem.

Not sure which model it is but it is VERY light, I think about 22-23 lbs. I normally run a 50mm stem but for some reason the set up on this just works, it pedals just so well. I will post some pics when it is fully built!

it was a commencal furious, I now have an intense 5.5 evp… my wife is chuffed with the finish on the frame, just need to strip the wheels and clean then up then it's done…..

Does she singletrack? Does she Singlespeed? no.. Who feking cares.. FFS the world was been like this for as long as time, low £ labour = high profit… a lot of comapnies will try it on!I dont agree with it but if your daft enough to try your luck in a new country and expect the GOLDEN pot of cash…. your daft as the brush your holding!

As someone who has had 10 bikes in the last 3 years let me put my 10p in. After a long brake from riding I brought a bike, realised it was not what I needed, changed it, got into DH living near cwm carn, all went well until a big accident, changed bikes a few times while I was healing, changed bikes again.. top and bottom of it for me was 1) too much time on my hands whilst injured and I like building bikes to keep me occupied, 2) I have 2 young kids so not as much time to ride as I would like, 3) poor choices on which bike. Well now I am a tad fitter health wise and finally have a bike I really like I am content…. I am happy I have ridden and owned a nice range of bikes as I feel I truly know what I have suits my needs!

the cheapest I've ever found an aluminium frame was US$33 factory price in China. Plain gauge, basic, painted.

$33? that must have been using child labour, no H&S and people working 40 hr shifts to cut down their overheads :? oh and baking pies in the same oven

if you apply that thought then a bike is worth about £40… if you do not take into account, R&D, Testing, Marketing, Packaging, Transport, Rent, Electric, Gas, Labour, Other staffing costs, Telephone, storage, equipment, tooling etc etc etc. If you don’t need an item then it can appear to be worthless and over priced!. I agree it is prob a wasted design that people will not buy, but only being worth £1.10 taking into account all the costs involved, and if it is a small Co making it with less lines they will have a higher mark up!

I think it is a tad easy to say if someone uses the classified's in the right or wrong way, I have sold stuff on there too cheap and somethimes too high… I tend to sell bits for a price I think it is worth… but many of us dont always get it right! Likewise buying.. I have picked up a lot of bargains I needed and have had a lot of decent STW'ers help me out, but I have also paid over the odds a few times.. All horses for courses imho… at least the people who use STW for selling only do not frequent the chat forums :)

Got the 36's off ebay…. I prefer longer cables in case I crash so have some bar spin availablehe pedals are grippy and going on new prices now cost £70, not sure what I would replace them with? I am thinking of going spd! the cranks I agree and at some point the wheels as well.

the dhx is a pig to set up, BUT once done it is nice.. just too many adjustments on it! if you work them all out (they all effect each other) then it is just sweet, works almost like a full coil without the weight!
