So are people boycotting them in protest?

It is effectively a protest yes. All of this is linked though, the invasion of privacy is one angle, but it’s what they do with the data that is really concerning to me.

My thinking is if you’re enlightened enough to know about the likes of Cambridge Analytica, then you’re probably gaining your information from more reputable sources than something shared on Facebook

It’s not about the individual though is it. I’m happy that you won’t be influenced but what about the damage they do to the rest of the population that fall for the Cambridge Analytica approach, that in some way results in us all suffering the effects of Brexit and Trump.

I found graphics like that in this article

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/zakdoffman/2021/01/09/stop-using-whatsapp-after-facebook-apple-imessage-and-signal-privacy-backlash/?sh=5d4ff9bd6cf5

That’s pretty defeatist danny, this seems like an opportunity for consumers to say “hold on facebook, we aren’t happy with this model”

It’s a slowly and steady nudging people along sort of approach. One stubborn group I just suggested that they try it for a month. Two weeks in they all love it and are encouraging their friends.

I’ve switched to signal and it’s great. There is a desktop app which works well too. It has prompted some difficult conversations with groups that I have encouraged to switch, but they have mainly been receptive and the conversations seem to create a snowball effect that I hope means more people come over to it. In the meantime I am running signal and whatsapp but hoping to ditch whatsapp soon. My perspective is that if there is an alternative which does everything whatsapp does but isn’t linked to facebook, then why not use it.

Thanks Dave. I was quite shocked when I got the post out as the frame is only a year old. I’ve always had steel frames and never seen this level of rust. I’m thinking the culprit might be the dropper post port. There is a port for stealth routing but I’m running an external one as I just had it from my last frame and thought I’d run it til it died. I covered the stealth port with a good covering of gorilla tape but maybe damp is getting in, I then store it hanging from the front wheel so any damp might well be festering in there and draining into chain and seat stays. I’m sure with the steps described above all will be good though. Just going to order some XCP (linky)

Thanks guys, found an old thread on drilling drainage holes so will get to it.

No BB drainage hole at the moment and bearings seem ok although I did change it relatively recently. Just drill a drainage hole then? Should it just go right in the centre of the BB shell?

Looks like good stuff thanks. Would you bother trying to remove the rust I can reach. Thinking bit of wet n dry on a long pokey thing, or will spraying that stuff in just sort it?

Interesting to hear your perspective. I do worry about who gets to define what a pest is. Next doors cat is a pest in my garden, reach for the gun? We used to keep chickens until a fox came and killed them but I still wouldn’t want to see it shot.

Fair play for putting your point across brads. The name calling earlier up on the thread obviously got peoples backs up but it would be interesting to hear more. What is it that you see as legitimate to head out and shoot? And where does the line between pest control and blood sport get drawn?

I’ve had success with these on lights similar to that, although the gopro thing works well too, but I like the hope one for the bars.

Same happened to a mate of mine and it was less than 6cm, similarly he just sucked it up. Useful to let other people know and to be super careful about measurements. I read the OP as a recommend/warning to others to be careful, not a complaint as such.

Refreshing to see Mary Ann getting some love on here. Great thread echoing much of my feelings over the last year of Techno Tuesday and the Friday mixes. Paula Temple is just fantastic. I traveled all over to see Dave Clarke back in the day, saw him at 4am to 6am NY day 2000, great way to start the millennium. Was at Sankeys for that Hawtin gig, probably lost it next to you. Goosebumps just thinking about it!

Macc forest holds up pretty well, charity lane can be a stream but rarely muddy, can go over to cumberland clough which is mainly rocks.

I feel your pain though, it is rotten out there a the minute.

I replaced a similar vintage stereo in my A4, ran into problems because the rear speakers are driven from an additional amp buried in the rear door (if I remember correctly). That bit of wiring was beyond me but I’m sure it isn’t insurmountable. One of those bluetooth jobbies might be an easier solution. I was after DAB as well though.

What wheels have you currently got? If they’re decent just build it up as 10 or 11 speed then go and enjoy it. That’d save a fair bit of expense and hassle.

I’m surprised you aren’t finding bargains. I sold my car last week and got next to nothing for it, it ended up with webuyanycar. Chatting to the guy there he said they’ve never been busier, mostly with people selling cars because they’ve lost their job. Also people buying cars in the up to £2k category just don’t have spare cash to be buying right now. I would think there has never been a better time to pick up a cheap, well looked after workhorse. Long MOT and decent service history are a must, but shop around and don’t be shy in expecting a low price.

For context I went into selling mine hoping for £1500, after a couple of weeks I’d have been happy with £750, ended up getting £300.

Still pretty spicy in sections, the undergrowth was one of the main challenges on the closed bits though! Well done for tackling them back in the day.

Yeah I took that with a pinch of salt, think she was just letting off steam. She seemed to think that since it was closed we were committing an offence. She backed down pretty quickly on that front. Her main point was that the use of the two trails is causing erosion which has caused flooding in the village.

Just wanting to bump this thread…..

We went out yesterday in the white peak and had never ridden these descents but had liked the look of them from the vertebrate book. Didn’t do any research before hand which was a mistake. Both of the Hollinsclough descents are still blocked by rocks and one had bales of hay there too. We squeezed past the rocks and rode one. It was overgrown and horrible and wish we hadn’t. But must importantly we encountered the lady who owns the house at the bottom who was very angry and threatened to call the police and have us arrested. We were calm, talked to her nicely and it all ended amicably but I would heartily recommend that people don’t ride either of these. The riding isn’t good and it’s just not worth annoying them any more.

In the process of trying to get hold of a switch for my two lads and had pondered this question, so useful info thanks.

The bigger issue right now is where to get hold of one of the actual consoles, they are like gold dust!

I got one of the on-one “enduro” helmets when they were £10, doesn’t fit me. You can have it for price of postage if you want as it’s getting the way. email should be in profile if you’re interested.

I’d say you’re spot on with your sizing choice. I have a mk1 and am same size as you on a large and it’s perfect. Also the dropper thing is correct, but they just work so well. Can’t really help with the coil, although I run a cane creak on mine and it is lovely. Best place for advice is to speak to Ben or Dan at Bird, they really are as great as everyone says (they’ll probably be along in a minute anyway). Also there is a very active facebook group.
