Am thinking of getting one in the spring. If I do, then it’ll mean using the pavement of the main road (40mph) for about 5 miles which IMO is fine. No way would I use the road – not prepared to take the risk.

Thankfully can go cross country at the start then nip through some residential bits at the end.

That’s on my list Cheesey. Will get there eventually.

Finished The Hanging Shed last week: fast-paced post WW II thriller that takes a swipe at various ‘groups’ but remains eminently readable.

Currently reading Court of the Air: steampunkery galore.

I know what you’re saying, and I too am incredibly skeptical about many coaches, therapists and other practitioners etc – and also the organisations that ‘train’ them.

But there are many excellent and truly skilled coaches that offer life coaching (I loathe that term BTW, hence I prefer personal coaching) across many areas. Sure, there are others that think they know it all because they did a weekend course at “Europe’s largest and more successful coaching training academy – we train more coaches than anybody else” type organisation. Avoid them (by and large).

I think we’re trying to agree on the same point(s) but coming at it from different angles/experiences.

EDIT: the best coaches I know have been trained by CTI and Coach-U. In fact, 9/10 of the best I know are from those ‘schools’.

I’m not talking about business coaching. I’m talking about personal coaching (not the fluffy bullshit that doesn’t go anywhere, but the professionally trained individual who is capable of helping the client create positive change).

EDIT: Like you say, some have qualifications/experience in other fields.

Counsellors are like any profession; some good, some bad. Depends on what you’re seeking, but I’d suggest looking around for a coach. IME, the good coaches are more proactive and get you taking action instead of reflecting etc.

I did my coaching through CTI and know loads of genuine/excellent coaches that work in all kinds of fields. Feel free to drop me an email and I’ll see if I can track down one or two that might be better suited.

**** useless IME. Made such a mess of setting up my son’s Trust thingy (on behalf of grand-parents) that we dumped them immediately.

    Wouldn’t use them for anything.

Wasn’t going to watch it but the missus did plus I was too knackered to move … A worthwhile improvement on the first episode; still didn’t find the ‘battle’ scenes particularly good, but at least the love story (cough cough) conveyed well. Makes me hate the futility of war even more.

Matt and Luke did, Ken ended up working in an abattoir.

You mean Craig? Shit, did I really remember his name?

My best mate bought Cat Amongst The Pigeons when it came out. Boy, how we took the piss.

TBFT, they seemed to be decent young lads who got the break and ended up living the pop dream.

    Assume he meant down?

Yes, but I think Matt was referring to the fact it can be an absolute dog to even walk up, let alone ride down.

**** me you mean down to the stepping stones? Last time I was there (not recently) a bit of that is tough to get up, on foot.

Yep. It’s a right bastard on foot (at the end of a 2-3hr run) as well as the odd occasion I’ve seen fit to carry my bike up there too.

Have often wondered if someone has attempted it though.

Speaking of Boxhill, has anyone here ever cleared the steps (from the top down to the river)? Tis strictly a footpath and one I wouldn’t ever condone attacking on a bike.

What is your favorite Surrey hills Climb / Descent ??

Forgotten its name but the one that starts at the top of Winterfold (just north of the ‘off limits’ roll-in area) and runs down to Walking Bottom carpark.

It’s parallel to TR yes, crosses right at the top.

    The off-camber one?

Oddly I’ve had days when I clean that in really shit conditions, and days when I dab it when fine.

I’ve not read all the above, but what I would add is how much does he want to be a RM? And what are his motives and expectations?

I only ask because a mate joined about 3-4 years ago, passed the necessary selection/training etc, and then realised he no longer wanted in. They made it nigh on impossible for him to leave and that included bullying etc. Thankfully two of our mates (one an older ex-RM and another with shall we say “covert” experience) were able to support him emotionally until he finally stood his ground and left. He felt that without them he would still be there.

Wasn’t a nice experience he said. Just my tuppence.

A strenuous workout is gonna burn calories, but nowhere near as many as an hour on a rower, or the treadmill say. Judge it by how much it makes you sweat as a rough guide.

While I’m a fan of the ‘you get out what you put in’ school of fitness/weight loss, I do think there’s some truth in stuff like Zone 2 – and that’s not nearly enough to get a sweat on.

I know what you’re saying, but I think there are other more scientific models out there – it’s not just a case of ‘going for it’, i.e. sweating masses or ‘getting out what you put in’.

I suppose the upshot is STILL finding a way to combine a sensible diet (which isn’t the same for everyone) with the right exercise, i.e. mixing up weights with cardio, speed, strength, endurance, intervals etc. Not so easy now with a family!

spacemonkey – not the weights, that’s just toning me up.

But a fair few people swear that doing the right weights has a significant impact on calorie burn/weight loss. So would you say they helped you shift more pounds in the early days but are now more suited to keeping tone?

    spacemonkey

Hmm, interesting. Do you reckon it’s a combination of the weights and not eating after 6pm that’s made the most impact?

I know I should do weights, but they’re so damn boring. Not eating post-6pm isn’t really an option either – but I’ve heard other people swear by it.

You should get a few takers off here too. I’d offer but at present I can’t get out to ride due to family/work commitments. Only had about 5 turbo sessions (and no outdoor riding) in 8 weeks.

Probably gets on well with Balotelli though … both a pair of complete ****s.

And as for the latter’s agent, I give you this conceited bunch of bollocks.

Well done City. You and your plastic fans deserve one another.

ExxonMobile, the owner of the Fawley Refinery on Southampton Water, told the BBC its stock levels for London and the South East remained good and it would continue to deliver to forecourts as normal.

Could be bollocks. Could be true. No unusual queues round here (Surrey) so far.

The question is, do we invest more of our time watching the second part?

Only if I really have nothing better to do.

Bloody awful adaption. I reckon the Beeb farmed this out to C5 to produce.

Not a patch on the book. Pretty dire IMO.

Poor casting, poor scripting and poor sets/choreography (especially in and around the trenches). A real dis-service to Faulk’s original.

I’m running a Taxc (MTB) on mine. Seems fine so far. If you have a spare slick and want to save pennies then give that a go. But if you need to buy a tyre anyway, then why not just opt for TT-specific one? Can’t see the point arguing over a couple of quid for the sake of something that definitely lasts.

@ oldgit, yeah a great hero, are you refering to the Seven Pillars of Wisdom? I read it about 15 years ago and struggled with it but I was trying to read it when doing some evening work when I was a student in a local corner shop, been meaning to revisit sometime soon with a more maturer focussed mind.

I struggled with it a while back too. Wasn’t what I was expecting. Have long been fascinated with the man himself – very dashing. Visited an exhibition devoted to him at the IWM a few years ago – very interesting. Add to that his quirky house and the nature of his death and you can’t help but wonder what more he could have achieved. An ex-girlfriend is also related to him.
