  • 8 Ways To Turn Your Daily Exercise Ride Into A Life Long Habit

Like Convert says, you just don’t get it TJ. It’s not about bullying – that’s bullshit. It’s about respecting other road users. In a car, I can cover ground more quickly than a bike. End of.

I’ve said it before on here and I’ll say it again: I honestly believe that the horsey types around here are more respectful of cars than many cyclists. At least they look for an opportunity to ‘pull over/in’ and let people past, as opposed to hogging the (often singletrack country) road.

Have already replied TJ with my edit.

I really don’t get why people complicate this matter. It’s really **** simple.

Sharing the road is fine. But as a bike rider (or a runner or horse-rider), you also need to respect that fact that a car can cover distance faster than you, and as such, a sensible driver should be given the opportunity to overtake (safely).

As a driver, you should respect runners, horsey types, cyclists, etc – but also be aware that you can power past them once the opportunity arises.

    Simples.

EDIT: cyclists that ride 2-3 abreast on long straight country lane (singletrack-type sections) should grow up and get some manners.

FFS, all it takes is a bit of common sense and courtesy from both parties. When in a group, I always usher other riders in to allow cars to overtake – as do most other riders I know (some don’t bother). And when in a car, I like to think I know how to judge when to overtake – if they’re riding 2-3 abreast for no reason then I’ll beep ’em. Have on occasion decided to get verbal because they just won’t move (always roadies).

None of us own the road – we share it. So grow up and show some maturity. Tis all.

My mate’s gf is Gambian and they spend 3-4 weeks/yr over there. He loves it. But I guess she knows where to go and what to do/what not to do etc. Apparently her family are bonkers – that’s what he kept on about last summer IIRC.

Even though (I think) it’s marked as a footpath, I did do the coastal path during the 2003 heatwave – hence getting heatstroke at one point.

Felt very primeval at times, with nothing but the rocks arrowing down into the waves below. Had to carry the bike over a few scary obstacles too. Met loads of chatty people and generally really enjoyed it. Can’t recommend it as an ‘official’ trail though.

Yeah, I was hoping it was just overheating. But had been cutting on double-height to ease the strain and everything was fine. And that was now a couple of hours ago and still no start.

Will see if I can grab a multimeter off a mate. Ta

I’m with Tom and JH: not particularly impressed so far. Was going to wait a few weeks but ended up getting sucked in because of the price.

Hardly innovative – basically mimicking some old Windows ideas with iOS blah blah. Maybe the under-the-hood improvements will help in the long run, but IMO not much to be excited about.

And the reverse-scrolling is DMFHI. Grrhh.

PC, Mac Mini and MBP can all connect via cable – and everything works as it should.

Mini and MBP are happy searching for wifi and can see the router, but the password is not being accepted as correct.

Have gone in to router admin 192.168.0.1 and changed p/w and keys but to no avail. Have also changed channels but still nothing.

    Haven’t done a firmware update.

At 10am I ran router diagnostics and is said wifi wasn’t working. So I rebooted everything and it came up as PASS. But still nothing will connect. Not sure if the password side can become corrupted because that appears to be where it’s stalling.-

    Cheers

I checked the App Store out of curiosity this morning and found no hint of it yet. Hopefully Jameie’s link is accurate because I didn’t see any dates other than just ‘July’ on the Apple site too.

Will probably give it a month or so to bed in and see how people take to it. Can’t see how the extra functionality over SL is really going to make much real-life difference. Launchpad seems gimmicky IMO (unless you genuinely use 50 apps regularly blah blah) …

EDIT: I also subscribed to the Lion update and haven’t heard a dicky bird.

I think there’s also some logic in the “Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince(?) and supper like a pauper” adage. I.e. power up with your complex slow-release carbs in the morning, sustain yourself in the afternoon (with small amount of carbs), then wind down with no carbs (or very minimal).

Couple with a good amount of exercise, I reckon you can lose a steady and recognisable amount of weight (fat) each week. I guess if you’re a good deal overweight in the first place then the initial loss could be 200-300% more than that later on.

Plus things like doing certain weights is supposed to add fat burning.

So all in all I reckon you’ll lose a kilo or two per week to begin with then see it level of.

Been here 11 years, love it. Bits can be old people orientated, however there are some great pubs and the biking is good, a mix of open downland and excellent singletrack in Friston, though be prepared to SS in winter as the mud just eats transmissions.

Great pubs? I remember walking into what must have been a gay pub with a mate to watch a Five Nations game about 10 years ago. We were still pissed from the night before and wanted to find somewhere different. The pub had a locked door and security entry-cam IIR – one the corner of a backstreet? Twas a bit weird, but the night before had been immense so all was cool.

Have never been sure of UW other than I knew someone who kept plugging their stuff – got v annoying v quickly so I avoided him.

Have been with EON for nearly 3 years – had some recent issues which were collectively both their fault and ours – which left us £800 outstanding. However, their customer service folk are actually pretty decent, even more so their managers who (for us anyway) were genuinely figuring our how we could save money blah blah. Pleasantly surprised in the end.

Beware paying £46/m for elec and gas. I might be wrong but I can’t see how that’s possible unless in a 1-2 bed flat with very economical use. We’re expecting to spend about £850 this year on just elec (3 bed house).

OP, it doesn’t seem like you’ve answered what you want the machine for …

IME a PC for everyday use is better VFM than its Apple equivalent. Plus with improvements to W7 it’s become more stable and generally better.

I don’t buy into the ‘Wow, isn’t OSX great because …’ bollocks. OSX (I run 10.6 on MBP and Mini) is okay but just not as friendly and contextually feature-rich as W7. Hence I don’t like it as much. Pretty, yes. Functional, not wholly.

Lion looks to add a few more things but it could be style over substance, which is IMO what OSX is anyway.

More s/w for W7 too, but that’s subjective anyway because you need to figure out what you want.

Browsing pretty much the same on both. Safari is IMO shit. Chrome defo the way for moi.

Tandoori mix and mustard seeds are not necessarily hot. Can be very mild when added to creme freche. It may not be your (or her) bag, but you might be surprised at how fresh and clean it tastes. Even more so given the moisture added to the chicken via the water.

    spacemonkey
    Full Member

Pick up some spices (dry tandoori mix, fenugreek and mustard seeds) and some creme freche. Put the latter in a bowl and add the spices – whisk around until it’s a pinky/red colour. Add chicken (pieces). Marinate for a couple of hours if poss – if not, no worries.

Slap in an oven dish, add 3-6 tbps water and cover with tin foil. 180deg for 20-25 mins.

Add some chopped veg if you want to (just make sure to add a more mix and water).

Boil your rice, lentils or make some gram wraps.

    Job done.

    Cheaper and tastier.

Back in about 03/04 I had a call from an African-sounding chap pretending to be a Director at a particular London hospital. He wanted to buy 50 laptops, so I asked him what spec/budget/etc – he said “You choose. Just deliver 50 laptops and I will pay you.” Eh, WTF?

So I asked for his contact number (which just so happened to include Nigerian codes), and his email (which was nothing like the proper schema used by the hospital) … and said I’d get back to him. I then called the hospital and asked to speak to this Director … blah blah … decided we’d set up a sting. Then arranged the (non-) delivery of said items to said address, at which point the plod picked up a dodgy little Nigerian.

    What a knobber.

If you get an average group size of 3, then its only 90 quid for half a days work, its not really a lot of money when looking at it as earning a wage.

But if you get 6-8 then £180-£240 isn’t to be sniffed at.

And like rocketman said, if there are families of four paying the best part of £120 then they must be bonkers.

@HH maybe these are aimed at the slower/beginner types. Fairy muff. But still damn expensive.

I’d have thought red socks and walking poles would be more appropriate at that rate of progress.

    Totally.

And yet they also say “There’ll usually be time for a short break to sample the fantastic cakes sold from the National Trust shop at the top of Box Hill.” 🙂

I’m sure they’re decent folk and all they’re doing is tapping into what must be a paying market.

IME Zen. Defo the more expensive end, but the connection hasn’t gone down in the 2-3yrs I’ve been with them. A mate has also used them for at 6-7 years and never had a problem either.

Plus they have genuinely helpful English-speaking English people in Englishville on the end of a freephone number who’ll pick up immediately and help you out with anything relevant to their service.

Others will no doubt swear by various ISPs which is fine – I’m just giving you my tuppence (having experienced loads of providers (business and private) since the early 90s.

Strokes and such like can be nasty, with longer-term effects not being picked up until it’s too late. So make sure you ask the staff as many questions as you feel necessary, i.e. try to gain insight into what happened, why it happened and what might kick off as a result.

Not going to go into detail – just trust me. When it goes wrong, it can go irrecoverably wrong.

    Hope she gets sorted.

IMO the Corkscrew is more of a novelty than anything. Sure can be a bitch to find though, especially if on your own and at the end of a ride when it’s the last thing you’re looking for.

It is still quite funky though. Don’t know why. Just is. But that’s probably my take on Swinley full stop. Not the kind of place to visit regularly, but 2-3 times a year is cool.

    + Philips Sonicare.

Had their top of the range one (RRP £200 but you can nearly always pick up for nearly half that somewhere) for 18 months. The first time you use it makes you realise just how clean your teeth really can be. Feels like they’ve been polished etc.

Put it this way, last Xmas was a horrible time for buying oil; 75p/litre and all sorts of delays because of the snow etc. We stupidly got caught out and had to use an electric heater for about 3 wks. Not good.

Bear in mind oil is currently in the mid 50s, I’d say buy now. IMO it won’t got down more than 1-2p. And by winter it’ll be up in the 70s or maybe even 80s.

Also check out the BJ group buying weekends – you might get a little extra off too.

Just wondering what kind of world you live in Lewis, especially as your previous thread was on the subject of kicking a driver’s car door because he previously drove you off the road … to which you said:

he stopped, but i just stood there and smiled as he patronisinly tapped my helmet, he didnt look as happy when i said my bike was probably worth more than his car and my cuts would heal but the scrath on his car wouldn’t. -_-
it was an old toyota banger!

It’s been a while since someone on here spoke as much shit as you. In need of a little attention are we? Troll or no troll, you certainly make it as a new entry straight in at number one on Top of the Cocks. You are to be commended.
