    sounds perfectly reasonable for me..

One thing puzzled me though.. Doesn’t the printing two different length magazines for subscribers and news-stand not create an extra cost?

    on a similar theme..

has anyone run a front mech with a Sram 10-42 11 speed cassette?

id obviously avoid big ring and 36/42 and granny ring 10/12/14 type combos!

    the reason?

I like the way the shift onto the granny alters how my suspension works on climbs..

and im forever searching for that one lower gear even when in the bottom one because im not the fittest / strongest

and the 10-42 and a 22/24 36 would give me more range..!

    Slightly off topic..

but this is what I see every time someone mentions an orangery..

could it be the air transfer port from the positive to the negative air chamber being a bit blocked and getting float fluid stuck in it?

which would then squelch for the first few cycles then go away..? i had an old RP23 do this..

might be worth a quick air can service before sending it away? (it fixed my RP23)

if your cranks will allow it.. could you add a granny ring to manually change into for some long climbs?

a tiny bit of extra weight.. but if you are just either going up or down it might be worth it?

even if you just used it for every other climb it would still spread the wear across the 36-42 in the 30t ring.. to the 28-32 in the 22t granny? giving you hopefully a bit more cassette life..

    We’ve got one..

we found it in the basement when we moved into the current house!

its very noisy.. and needs a pipe vented outside through an open window..

the open window (sealed as best as possible with curtains) and hot pipe means its not as effective as it could be..

we use it in the attic bedroom where our one year old daughter sleeps to cool the room before she goes to bed..

it takes the edge off the heat and drops the temperature a couple of degrees whilst its running in the evening, but if its still hot outside the second you turn it off the room starts warming back up again..

its handy to have in the attic but i’m not sure i’d actually buy one..

pedestal fans.. curtains closed during the day and ventilation at night is the best bet.

Ive only been on a couple of shortish canal towpath type rides with it so far.. she’s only just over a year old, so very much taking it easy at the moment..

had mine on the full suss with a standard seatpost (dropper is down at its minimum height so the weeride wont mount on it..) for the first attempt..

found it very difficult to get started… and not much room for me to reach for the bars..

then swapped it to the hard tail.. which has a much shorter headtube.. longer top tube.. and most importantly.. i can fit it on the dropper post.. I raised the bars a touch too

Its much.. much easier to manage starts and stops with the dropper.. as i can sit on the seat with my feet on the floor, and the shorter headtube and raised bars give me enough room to manoeuvre around..

its still pretty ‘legs akimbo’ when riding though but just about manageable on the edges of the (flat) pedals..

im 5ft9 with shortish arms… which doesnt help!

i used this guy to do an old commencal meta and a 97 heckler..

    http://www.vapourblast.co.uk

He soda blasted my frames.. its less brutal than sand blasting.. but costs a bit more..

    he did an excellent job.

I had major cassette wobble on my road bike..

fitted an SLX 10 speed MTB cassette for some lower gears with an aluminium lock ring i had..

a few rides later i was cleaning the cassette and it was moving on the splines a fair bit..

    everything looked setup right..
the cassette had the same amount of play on the splines with no lock ring on as my other wheels..
no room for any spacers either..
    torqued right..
    was at a complete loss..

found an old steel lock ring and tried that.. and the majority of the movement stopped.

At LSN it depends on the finish, as some powders are a bit more expensive and how complex the frame too i think.. he prices each job individually for bikes i think..

both my hardtail frames where £40 or possibly £35.. i cant quite remember! both with metal flake powder too

alloy wheels where £120 for all four..

    slam panel was £25

all the prices above included blasting..

LSN for the heckler front triangle was £60 for plain satin black and i had already had that soda blasted..!

    spacehopper

    another recommendation for LSN here..

they did my Rockhopper.. (best bike in the world.. FACT!)

    and my inbred..

and ive had alloy wheels and the slam panel from my car done there too..

cheap.. and a brilliant job every time..

on the flipside i had the front triangle on my partners 97 Heckler done at Triple-S a few years ago.. and the finish just hasnt lasted anywhere near as well despite the bike not being used as much.. and it was more expensive..!

the thing that puts me off the XT cassettes is their weight compared to SRAM..

granted the SRAM cassettes cost much more..

but The 11-46 XT would also let me keep my current 32t oval chainring and crank without needing to swap them too to get the 30t oval..

but, id miss out on the higher 30t – 10t and potentially lower 30t 44t if i swapped to a one-up cog on the sram..

    argh. :?

    thanks for the replies.. :)

i did think the 9t might be a smidge too small and remove a more useful gear in the midrange..

i think an 11spd 10-44 would be perfect for me..

so it might have to be a SRAM cassette then a 44t one-up cog if there’s not enough range for me..

not suite sure how it works..

    but probably, yes..

and you will need to inform them, and provide proof..

best bet is to ring them and ask what you need to do.. they are usually pretty good on the phone..

its sending stuff the right stuff out in the mail at the right time to the right people they seem to struggle with..

    spacehopper

    they are pretty useless..

they messed up and didnt send out the pack with deferment forms in..

then sent out letters reminding people they needed to pay..

then sent out apology letters saying the deferment forms would be being sent out..

none of the deferment forms arrived for me and i had to phone up and get them to re-send my forms with the details on..

the deferment process can all be done online now though rather than posting stuff off.. though they still have to tell you by letter if the deferment has been accepted..

    this should help explain it..

    http://blog.artscyclery.com/science-behind-the-magic/science-behind-the-magic-drivetrain-compatibility/%5B/url%5D

the bit most people don’t seem to get is the rear mech ratio..

which is different between 6-7-8-9 speed shimano mountain and 10 speed shimano mountain..
(though the ratio is the same with 9 speed mountain and 10 speed road which is why mtb mechs are often used on 10 speed touring / road bikes)

with 6-7-8-9 speed, 1mm of cable pull moves the top jockey wheel across between cogs the same amount..

but with 10 speed they changed the leverage of the mech.. so 1mm of cable pull moves the mech a different amount to 6-7-8-9

the shifter doesn’t effect the above ratio.

explained better in the article though..

I’m Guessing this means slx 11 speed is a way off then..?

Was hoping for some cheapish shimano cranks that won’t scuff like the XT ones do and will let me run a 30t Oval this year..

no shed o garage her either.. (yet..!)

So.. ive got a vice like this..

that i use on top of a cheap black and decker workmate type folding bench.. i found the workmate type thing in the cellar when we moved in here.. the top bits where a bit knackered so i replaced them with new wood..

to mount the vice i just drilled some big holes through the same size as the mounting lugs on the vice.. and as near to the support at one side as i could for strength.. and then added an extra bit of wood to give the board a bit more strength and support it underneath..

a bit like this.. only to one side..

stuck some big washers underneath so the nuts dont dig in. while the varnish dried so they stuck.. got the right sized bolts and some wingnuts..

so all i need to do to use the vice is pop it on top… slip the bolts through and tighten up the wing nuts underneath by hand.. takes 30 seconds. :)

    im 5ft 9… 29inch inside leg..

bought a second hand small mk2 26″ cotic soul off ebay..

it turned out to be a medium.. :( I built it up anyway as I was unsure of the sizing too..

    and it felt absolutely massive..

I think the main problem for me was the longer headtube and therefore higher top tube.. the reach i could have coped with but the top tube was way too high for my liking..

this was coming from a 16inch mk1 inbred though which has a tiny headtube and v.low top tube..

dismantled it and sold it straight on..

    still got the inbred..

    what works for me is..

    summer – normal fox gloves

its a colder day.. – decathlon £1 fleecey gloves with the fox gloves on top

    its freezing – Fox Anti-Freeze

If my hands are cold at the beginning of a ride i often find if i stop for a few minutes once the rest of me has warmed up, that my hands will warm up then..

not sure if its either a circulation thing from my position on the bike.. or just air flow over my hands keeping them colder whilst i am riding.. but it seems to work for me most of the time!

i use north shore billet adapters…

    from here..

the downside being they cost twice as much as the disc did..

    yup.. i noticed that…

and Bruni tried to say to Peaty that he was like the opposite of him..!

ie, Bruni couldn’t win a world cup and was second loads like Peaty couldn’t win the world champs and was second for all those years..

Ruddy chuffed for Bruni too.. he really deserved that!

and such a popular win right across the paddock it seems.. everybody was happy for him! :D

Fs is 2×10 11-36 with Xt brakes
Ht is 1×10 11-42 with deore brakes

Tends to er more towards HT in winter and fs in summer..

I think some couriers also distinguish between..

brand new part in original (and i guess in theory ‘safe’)unopened packaging

    and

second hand part wrapped in bubble wrap (it doesnt matter to them safe this is made)

(royal mail certainly did/do this with batteries..)

which would help explain how manufacturers move their stock around…
large companies would also be able to negotiate beforehand with couriers etc when moving their stock around and put specific insurance in place if needed i guess..?

random bloke turns up at the post office with one parcel and its just a safer bet for royal mail to refuse it or ‘destroy it’ as they will have no idea / guarantee of the packaging safety..

and whilst most people will package stuff well.. ive had some ‘interesting’ packaging in the past from private sellers..!
