Edited riding footage from this weekend at Swinley and a couple of weeks ago in the Lakes, then went to a couple of jubilee house parties. Good times.

The other thing to consider is that the 360 has much better party chat options and is generally smoother when it comes to trying to play a game with all your friends. I avoid the trolls by restricting myself to party chat with my mates.

All my mates have 360s, so that’s what I have.

I think what your mates have got. Or if none of your mates have consoles, the PS3 is a better all round machine with the blu ray player (the 360 has got a lot of the VoD services now).

That said, I absolutely can’t stand the PS3 controller, whereas I find the 360 one so much more comfortable.

I’d love to be able to ride on footpaths as well as bridleways. As far as I’m concerned I wouldn’t want them to be engineered for our use as well as walkers, surely half the fun is dealing with the challenges that nature has provided?

Hmm, that place looks eminently reachable from my flat via tube/train/bike. Certainly easier/quicker to get to than Aston Hill.

    <hatches cunning plan>

The route I take in London tends to be either dual lane or have a bike/bus lane on the left hand side, so I’m generally passing on the left. As said before though it’s really dependent on what’s going on at the time. And be sensible with your speed (i.e. don’t go flying through/past stationary traffic).

Just be sensible I guess, and assume that people are morons.

Entered a video game review in The Times when I was about 10, got published and won copies of the games SPQR and Safecracker. Both ridiculously hard puzzle games that I had no chance of completing at the time. Nothing else.

I’ve got a 2006 P7. Sure I know it’s not the latest greatest lightest machine, but when I sit on it, it just feels right. Letting the bike handle things has got me through some tricksy moments. It’s my pride and joy, and has never let me down.

This probably stems from when my Dad got me a nickel finish P7 back in the early 90s (the same one featured in the recent Singletrack article about bikes that people absolutely desired but never got). I remember seeing that glorious machine for the first time, complete with chrome finish STX-RC group set. What a bike.

Plus I like the idea of buying British.

Good. My only desire is that they’d do this in London as well.

I used to have a clear old school crud guard on my old Orange P7 (the chrome/silver one as seen in the latest Singletrack wanted bikes bit). Unfortunately I broke it when I stacked it in the Lakes a few years ago, and sold the bike pretty soon after that.

It was too small for me for sure, but I still kinda regret selling it, bloody gorgeous bike.

Another vote for clear crud guards. Front I think the Mk2 version and for rear the flat original single seat post mount race guards.

    Orange friction addiction grips.

I’ve got a set of those grips at home, not too worn at all. Squidgy as I recall.

No, yes (although the commuter more than the mtb sadly), not really no although fixing computers is part of what I do.

I have extremely fond memories of eating very well in the Bakewell Pudding Shop. Amazing Bakewell puddings there (unsurprisingly). Plenty of old railway lines turned into gentle bike rides in the area as well I think. Something like the Monsal Trail?

MPEG Streamclip is also great if you’re after something a little more esoteric than Handbrake will do for you.

Got some Oakley photocromic Split Jackets,(exactly the same as trickydisco’s pair except not prescription), and they’re ace. They start of completely clear and I never actually notice the change when I’m out and about riding. But yeah, not exactly uber cheap.

I commute on a Cannondale Bad Boy Solo. Basically a flat barred road bike, with hydraulic disc brakes and a 3 speed hub gear. I also put Continental GP 4 Seasons tyres on it for massive puncture resistance.

It’s perfect for me, for my 6 mile commute in London. Which let’s be honest is pretty flat, but there is the odd attempt at an incline which the hub gears handle just fine.

I love how people get so worked up and spend so much on audio cables for their speakers, yet don’t consider that the XLR cables, and the patch bays (including the dusty soldering round the back that hasn’t been looked at since it was installed), and the patch cables and all of that used in recording studios is nowhere near the same ‘quality’ that these super-expensive hifi cables are. As seen in the post above mine.

    Hilarity ensues.

I recently got a single ply Maxxis High Roller super tacky for the front of my hard tail, and I think it’s ace :) Proper grippy.

I’ve got a Sony smart tv, and instead of spending £50 on an overpriced wireless adaptor that (according to reviews) could only find the wifi signal when you duct taped it to the router aerial, I went for one of these

I’ve got one and I love it. It does everything from trail centres to epic Lake District XC adventures. Yeah it’s not the lightest thing on the face of the planet but it feels sure-footed, always capable, and has never let me down.

Howies Extra Miler. It’s not the most waterproof thing on the face of the planet once the rain gears up but it’s great for everything else.

I recently got a Maxxis High Roller 2.35 single ply super tacky for the front, and I am in love with it. Rode Cwmcarn last weekend and my front wheel just felt planted and stable in just the right way.

No love for the Orange P7? I’m sure I saw the bearded chap in the first article in issue 72 riding one.

    Fox Vanilla 32s
    RaceFace Evolve cranks/chainrings
    Shimano XT Shadow rear mech
Shimano XT front mech + shifters (3×9 though so not down with the trends there)
    Avid Juicy 5 brakes
    Hope headset + bb
Kenda Nevegal + Maxxis High Roller tyres on WTB speeddisc rims (Hope Pro2 hubs though so extra points there right?)

    Yeah, maybe not…

The chance of my postman coming before I have to leave for work is zero, so I’m having to wait until I get home before my very first issue of Singletrack magazine is in my grubby paws.

    Curses.

For normal playback on a computer/youtube/tv 50fps is overkill, 25 would be absolutely fine (so long as it doesn’t then start playing back at half the speed). This would also halve the resulting file size. I shoot my GoPro at 50fps but then just use the extra frames during the edit if I want to slow things down, I’ll always render out at 25.

YUV is also overkill in terms of quality/size as well I think, ideally you want to aim for a good delivery codec. H.264 like cbike uses is a very popular choice.

I have indeed ridden the Borrowdale Bash, most excellent fun. Got some pretty rocky stuff in there, but it’s not quite up to Nan Bield in terms of it’s scale. If you haven’t done it I highly recommend it though. We stopped off in a bike shop in Keswick I think who sold us a well marked route map with directions and everything for some stupidly low price.

EDIT: If memory serves it was this place

Back of Skiddaw is pretty grand and scenic, but not particularly technical as I recall. Not that that made any difference to my friend falling off in a river…

There was an article in a recent Singletrack back issue about Ullswater and High Street then? I rode Ullswater towards the beginning of my MTB career so my mind has probably twisted the memories, but I remember it being both extremely rocky and extremely tricky.

I’m in London at the moment so hard to comment on current conditions, but the biggest route that springs to mind is the Nan Bield Pass. I did it a couple of years ago with friends and it was quite the experience.

I used to go to university at Lancaster, and we went riding in the Lakes generally once a week. If you’ve got a car (or a mate who likes mountain biking and who has a car which is what I did) you’re sorted.

We did all sorts of routes like Borrowdale Bash, Back of Skiddaw, Nan Bield, and a fair few others that I can’t remember the names of. Good times…

Baggies over lycra. Endura 3/4 humvees (with the padded lycra liner that pops in and out) for me :) Why anyone would ride around without padded shorts on is a mystery to me.

May have one if my CRC delivery is waiting for me at home this evening. I’ll post it if I do.
