Modern stop-start cars don’t cut the engine until the car is in neutral with the clutch released.

Should tell you all you need to know really.

Yeah, deactivate the stop/start. I did, that bloody thing was driving me round the bend.

I use neutral, but then if my thrust bearing goes, it’s me who has to drop the landrover box to fix it..

I’d suggest you actually ‘drop’ the gear box ;-)

I’m sure I’d read that coasting requires fuel to keep the engine running whereas engine braking will turn the engine with no fuel input?

18 pages , Guy Martin gets mentioned on page 6 , Top Gear by page 3

I’ll see your 18 pages with top gear and raise you:

    23 pages.

A celeb will sadly pass away, during the course of this thread reaching page 23.
At least one member will flounce, this may be related to a brief discussion about left foot braking.
And the thread will drift sufficiently to cover the subject of overtaking.

I’ve got Stans tubeless road rims. Yes, there’s an additional degree of effort required in getting a tyre on, in comparison to other rims, but I had put this down to my stans being tubeless and so therefore having a tighter fit of bead to rim. I’ve never broken a tyre lever though.

Solo – that range, yes, but other models in it. Tbh they are ok, I can resist currently.

I wasn’t knocking anyone for being tempted, just saying that I appear to be impervious to that particular temptation. possibly for the reason you mention here:

But I’ve not done much riding lately. When I get back on the bike I’ll be hungrier, so it’ll be much more of a challenge.

Sitting on my ass, in an office, 10 hours a day, I don’t really feel the need for copious quantities of sweet foods.

I find that too. I think it’s because cereal is universally either:
    a) a small bowl of crap that tastes of milk soaked cardboard
    b) crap loaded with sugar so you eat a 3x “recommended serving” bowlful and still crash 2 hours later.

    I reckon you’re right there.

Tried the whole spinach, eggs, neanderthal/paleo/iDave/4HB breakfast thing, and that just left me hungry and tired, at least some carbs give me a pick me up for a few hours.

Still good though as you bottomed-out the carbs first and then added back, just enough carbs to set you up.

This never used to be a problem when I smoked. Caffeine and nicotine used to complete my dietary needs until lunchtime.

Apparently Nicotine promotes the release of fat from fat cells. Probably why those who partake experience suppressed appetite.

Behind me, about 5 feet away are four pots of those mini bites from MnS, for public consumption.

    These things?

If so, about 18 months ago I worked in a place where someone use to bring these into the office. I’ve never enjoyed any of the contents. I’m fairly sure I’m not missing anything important.

At my current office, there’s usually cakes, biscuits, etc, laid out in the kitchen. However, I’m never tempted and can quite easily look on, uninterested in any of it.

Yeah periodically, that’s it… but I can go a long time doing fairly well and not much happens to my weight.

I think you once actually identified the source of your personal frustration on this matter as “inconsistency“.

Lifestyle has more influence on this subject, imo, than ever it has and not everyone feels they can choose an acceptable lifestyle and still pay the mortgage. For lots of folk it’s a compromise and so likely to provide varied results.

Because of the job I do, my lifestyle, from a fitness perspective is poop!

Surely this falls into the same category as tracky bottoms.

That track suit trousers are acceptable mid aged male attire, only, while driving the largest, German saloon car, you can find.

Not certain whether one is obliged by the gods of UK fashion, to wear brogues or ankle boots with said track suit trousers.

Has any of you considered wearing your pajamas, while out and about?

Might a cycling Jersey be accpetable **shudders** if worn in combination with PJ trousers?

I imagine a vintage wool jersey could be ok.

No, no & thrice, I tell you, no, it is not!

In decent society, one is only expected to wear Merino cycling Jerseys while about to engage in, is engaging in, or having just ceased, cycling.

Soon, expect to be visited by the ghost of cycling “The Rules” which I will not mention.

While I don’t purchase wallets very often, my two most recent wallets have been bought from Aspinal of London:

Breast wallet: Similar to this but with CC slots on the right leaf, rotated 90 degrees.

Double fold CC case with notes pocket: Similar to this. It’s made in bright blue leather and Monogrammed, obviously.

I’ve a money clip made from Silver, which I tend to use to carry cash when a wallet isn’t suitable.

I traced the source of my eczema to diet. I cut out dairy, added Spinach and my eczema cleared up.

I can get it back if I eat cheese.

Before discovering the dietary link, I had taken to using exfoliates to clean the area of skin in question. Again my experience may not be relevant or applicable.

My eczema was by comparison, very slight and I do sympathize with those who suffer with it.

    Edit:

I will also add, be careful with steroids – they can thin the skin with long term use.

I was warned of this also.

The thing for me is that saying someone is thin and fit, so therefore should not get cholesterol checked is terrible advice

I agree. That was my point ^^

Woody, imo, your Doc wasn’t doing you any favours with that attitude. Get a check done. If you’re ok, great, if not, then the sooner you know, the better.

Last time I was at the docs I even asked, his reply was basically “You’re not overweight and you’re active. If you feel ok, then you’re probably ok.”

    Makes some sense I suppose

    Shred – Member

My uncle, he dropped dead from a heart attack and had very high cholesterol, which went undiagnosed as he never had it checked.

No idea, never had it measured.

Only found out my blood pressure for the first time last Friday (age 45)! Wife was in hospital recovering from GA and so I unplugged her from the Vital signs monitor and plugged myself in (after disabling the alarms).

The way the body processes and uses food/drink for energy and the way the different energy systems interact is very complicated but the 1st law of thermodynamics is simple. Consume more energy than you use and it gets stored, consume less and you lose weight. The method or internal energy source shouldn’t affect that.

Ah, the 1st law gets a mention. Energy is energy, right. Energy is measured, in this context, in calories. But not all calories are processed by the body in the same way.

The method is effected because the body isn’t a simple engine. You can’t just run the body like an engine for ‘X’ units of time and expect a particular result in energy expenditure. The complexity of the body means you can only alter things within a certain window of operation. Otherwise OP could just measure total fat content of their body. Do the maths and run about, continously, for a few weeks. But its not that simple. We fatigue, there are backround processes for general maintenance and repair, etc, etc.

My response to the diet and exercise has changed as I’ve trained and dieted over the years.

Aging will play a part in this. Hormonal response change over time for different reasons including age.

it is pretty distractingly oversimplistic to keep on about the laws of thermodynamics when talking to training cyclists trying to achieve a racing weight.
    Yeap.

    footflaps – Member

the 1st law of thermodynamics is simple

Human body isn’t though. There are so many feedback loops which can change and alter steady state / response to stimulii behaviour.

    Also a good point.

Ultimately the 1st law must be obeyed, but it looks to me ^^ as if a few folk know it’s just not that simple.

at the end of the test I was told I was rubbish at burning fats for fuel

However, IIRC, you did improve your ability to use more fat, via change in diet and exercise, no?

Your experience also substantiates, if not already obvious, MolGrips point about genetic variation between individuals.
