Err, cos they didn't fix a thing.

They charged him £10 to fix a rear brake issue, and when he collected it the bleed screws were loose and the banjo connector was also loose. So how is that worth £10 ?.

I've been there when customers have collected their bike for the second time, after it had to be returned cos they c0cked up the job in the first place.

I reckon they're abit shonky, thats my opinion.

I thought that floating rotors were to allow optimal rotor to caliper alignment. As on motor cycles.

I thought that venting helped dissipate heat. and cross drilling combat glazing.

Thanks for your post. I reckon the shop he bought it from was probably a bit shonky and didn't properly check the entire bike over. Its been my experience that few bike shops complete a full check on a bike, nearly always something gets missed. I found that all the lever bleed screws were loose and the bleed screw in the rear caliper was loose too.

Its a bit too far for him to return the bike to the shop he purchased it from, but he did run it into Pedal Revolution, his local Trek dealer. They charged him £10. Yet when he brought it to me, as I mention, lots was loose on the entire rear brake system. So I wouldn't recommend Pedal Revolution to anyone.

I assume you've forked out the £35 for a bleed kit ?.

I noted that the brake lever resevoir caps state either DOT 4 or DOT 5 fluid. Does that mean that the two fluids can be mixed ?. Otherwise, how do you know which fluid to use when bleeding/topping up, etc ?.

Cheers

Oh, and get to view their recovered bikes, and make it a regular thing, if you want.

Of course, if you do find it amongst their haul, you'll have to prove its yours, etc.

Yeah, I read that earlier in the thread. No results with the prints ?, that is strange.

Still, one can buy latex gloves from the £ shop now.

I hope you get it back.

The police know all the local theives. I'm surprized they haven't anyone in mind for this already. Unfortunately I guess that they may not be diverting too much resource to recovering stolen bikes, after all "the insurance will pay" is probably their attitude.

Don't they hold stolen, recovered items ?. Just consider that the frame has been painted, etc. Then, if it has been recovered later, the police may not identify it as yours.

Would it be possible to learn where they hold the bikes they recover and see if you can go check them. You'll probably be able to spot your bike, even if its appearance has been altered.

Just a thought.

OMG !, you bleed your brakes whenever you change pads ?, is that right.

Its not a critisism, don't get me wrong, but I'd be rocking in the corner if I had to bleed my brakes each time I changed the pads.

And just to be clear, I'm not knocking Hope brakes, I've not used/owned them so aint in a position to comment.

All my brakes have been Shimano and they stop me well enough, although they do squeal in the wet (sintered pads).

Actually, seeing as we're here, what is the cure for that, does one just apply some copper slip on the back of the pad, as one does with car brake pads to stop them squealing.

Well, heres a theory.

If you're stil driving round with the car number plate you use to have…, then anyone in your locale, who also views this forum, won't win any master mind competitions for making a connection between your car number plate and your pseudoname on here.

You've posted pics of the 9ster and your other bikes on here before, so they follow your car one day, and the rest is simple.

Anyway, damn shame the bikes have gone. The Ti is probably painted with hammerite and ferrying some scumbags ass around.

I posted about using torx with pin in centre a year or two ago. I use them on my "city" HT.

You don't have to go mad though.

I use one for the caliper to the adpater, one for the adpater to the frame, two on the stem face plate, one on the stem to steerer clamp, one for the steerer tube cap, one for the seat post clamp, one in each brake lever bar clamp and thats about it.

I've been leaving my bike in the city for years now and no parts have been removed, so I'm quite pleased with the result.

However, I also cover the bling labels too, so that at a glance, would be thieves don't see ROCKSHOX or XTR, which helps too, I reckon.

Oh, and if you do get screws with unusual shaped drives, buy more than one drive bit for them !…

Super juice didn't work with my MUD Xs on Mavic XM819s.

I now use the Hutchinson Protect air sealant. Only had one thorn so far…

I pulled a twig from my front tyre which was rotating with the wheel, and out comes the thorn along with some air, I just spun the wheel so that the hole was at the bottom and it sealed in seconds.

I just continued the ride, no pumping the tyre up, no faffage what so ever. That pretty much sold the Hutchinson stuff for me. I've had it in my tyres for months, probably 6 months now and it doesn't appear to have solidified, etc.

I got tubeless rims in order that I at least have the option to run either.

You can run a tubeless rim with a tube if you want.

With my Mavic rims, all I have to do is remove the valve and get a tube in there.

I got a purchase confirmation e-mail from Cable Universe, some basic bike lights.

I couldn't open it, my anitphising software kept closing the entire window.

Surprize, surprize, a few days later, my CCC calls me and tells me that my CC has been compromised, that I am to destroy my card and they'll send me another.

Go figure.

I got a very nice set of wheel made up for me by Jerry of JT cycles Ely.

Nice, informative guy, great wheels.

Oh, Mavic XM819s, DT comp spokes and DT 240 hubs. Running Bontrager MUD x, tubless with Hutchinson sealant. I tried the Bontrager super juice, it was crap.

After buying a pair of grey-import forks from Merlin, I wouldn't trust them as far as I could spit on them.

Not sure thats the right ride to clean ratio for me.

But I'd have never believed it if I hadn't have seen it. Cheers :-)

Yeah, perhaps cleaning devices for intermediate chain-servicing with the occassional chain off, brush and bucket every now and again.

Likewise for Jim.

So, it would seem that if I am to insist on getting every bit of rubbish out of my chain, I'm better off with a brush, a bucket and some Fenwicks.

Thanks to all, some amusing comments. Keep'em coming.

At the moment I'm considering a park-tools chain cleaning device and just using Muck-Off.

I'm just wondering if there are more effective cleaning devices out there and whether there is something better than muck-off for cleaning chains, biodegradeable, of course.

No flies on you, well spotted there. The original post related to the U.S.A.

However, our politicians aren't shy of looking to other countries for ideas regarding many areas of governance.

Read the entire article and you'll discover that our friends in the U.S.A. may consider a voluntary system. So don't worry, if it worked and if our MPs, sorry, MEPs, liked what they found, then you'd be able to buy your license on a voluntary basis.

Thanks

May I take it that you'd be happy with a bike-tax, err, license ?, here in the U.K. ?.

I can imagine that Gordon would love that idea, he is so strapped for cash right now.

Think of how the Gov would introduce it, license per person ?, nah, make it per bike !!! and watch that money role in.

Where would we mount our number plates ?.

Who knows, perhaps for 2010, a breathing tax, oh, err, I mean license….

I would argue that enough money is already generated for the inland revenue from taxes on bikes, their spare parts, the taxes from the people and companies who work in the trade, etc, etc.

In fact, does anyone know what the treasury makes out of our passion for the cycle ?.

No, licensing wouldn't get my vote. But then again, since when did that have anything to do with….anything.

License fee for cycling ?, Oh please, no !.

You have my sympathies. I've been made redundant and am now unemployed due to people buying chinese/Indian made.

Hacks me right off to read idiots here raving about the cost. All they're doing is employing Chinese workers.

Wait until their managers out source their job to the East…Globalisation, if they'd had told us then that what it really stood for was "the race to the bottom". Then I'd have told them to shove globalisation up the arse.

Now, this race to the bottom is all about who can make it the cheapest. Quality/longevity seems to be only a minor distraction. And as we all know, a China-mans wage demand is a fraction of that made by his English counterpart (house prices/council tax, etc).

Anyway, I'm building a light at the moment, its along the lines of your 6 LED light, but I'm using the switches and connectors I recommended to you with converted torch bodies.
Although I can use a Lathe and a Mill, I haven't either at my disposal. Just a dril, a hack saw and needle files.

Trout, Smudge, remember, there will always be a market for what you guys provide. I have and always intend to buy my batts/chargers from Smudge. Its just your work/efforts will be dwafted by the mass demand from those who chase the cheapest deal in obeyance to globalisation. Keep up your good work, if it pleases you.

I recently replaced some bearings and pawls on my rear wheel XC hub. I just walked up the road to my LBS, bought the parts I needed.

Then, I looked up the XC hub schematic on the Hope website and disassembled the hub as per the drawing. I could have easily replaced the axle at the time, had I needed to.

I have not and did not use any specialist tools to do the job. Just your common-all household DIY kit got me through.

I knew someone who got stopped for riding in a pedestrianised area of the town centre, a road that had been block weaved and closed to normal traffic. Plod was hiding in a shop doorway, when the cyclist approached at walking speed, just going along with the shoppers and giving way to all and any. Plod stepped out and goes into one.

Cyclist pointed out that moving as fast as the peds or slower and giving way ought not to be seen as dangersous, plod then proceeded to issue the £30 on the spot fine.

Not sure if that person ever paid the fine, they suspect that plod may have got their details slightly wrong…

Just as well I.D. cards aint compulsory, eah ?.

I was going to recommend Dell. I’ve had all my computers from them and can’t see the point of paying the premium for an HP.

Anyway, you’ve got your self a Compaq now, with Vista……

Oh man !. How I hate Vista. If you’re new to Vista, then you’re probably experiencing UAC Hell. Good news is, you can switch it off.

I tried vista for a short while on my new M1330 Dell laptop. However, when canon told me that they didn’t support vista for the scanner I have and that basically I’d have to bin a perfectly good peripheral, I started to feel really fed-up with Vista.
Couple this with the white knuckle ride of a lottery to see if all your peripherals will work with Vista, hoping that the manufacturers have written new drivers to enable my kit to work with Vista, was all too much.

In the end, it beat me, I gave in and now I run XP on a computer intended to run Vista. Fortunately there are some very clever people out there on the web who figured it out and which drivers to use, and then posted the advise for other Vista victims.

Congrates on your new computer, good luck with Vista.

How about this:

<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MblRtzCaHJo>

I’ve not much time, but…

The link above is a review for the Honda Clarity, a hydrogen fuel cell powered car, on sale now, in California, U.S.A. So theres your electric car !.

Oh, one small consideration, the cost to re-kit our entire planets fuel handling infrastructure to deal with the creation, transportation, distribution of hydrogen so that it can be made available at the pump, as petrol is today, would be phenominal.

Therefore, I seriously doubt that anyone is going to stump up the dosh to convert their entire fuel handling infrastructure to deal with hydrogen.

So don’t rush out and buy your Honda Clarity just yet.

But even if, for arguements sake, we had a liquid Hydrogen handling infrastructure available. Would you like to drive around with a hydrogen tank under the second row of seats in your car ?.

Its only my opinion, so don’t tear my head off, but batteries are not the answer. Any idea how hot these batts get ?, I’ve some knowledge of current manufacturuers attempts to put batteries in current and up-coming cars. Its a mare, they can’t package them, they can’t cool them, the batts are heavy, the cabling required for them would be out of place as your local substation, and as for sliding them in and out of your car, at replacement stations up and down the motorways. Not practical.

I offer for consideration, genetically modified bacteria used to produce bio-methanol, from resources that won’t have the potential to pressurize global food prices. Handling the methanol can be done with most of the equipement we already use for petrol/diesel. The only other minor techinical hurdle is that its flame is not visible, but an additive to the fuel would permit the flame to be seen, should there be an methanol fire.
Its a liquid at normal atmospherical pressure, so it can just slosh around in the tank like the fuel we already use.

Finally, I like the point that James May makes at the end of the Honda review, which goes something like this:

“I believe this is the car of the future, because its just like the car of today”.

Bye.

I came across this problem recently. The only way I could achieve this was to convert the MP3 to .wav and then edit in Nero Wave editor. Save as a new .wav and then convert back to MP3.

Long winded you may think, but I got the result I desired.

After reading that, I for one wouldn’t blame you for taking a different course of action, if there ever was a next time.

What is going through the tiny minds of magistrates who let this sort of thing slide. The injuries you suffered were in no way reflected in his sentence. All wrong.

Now I’m thinking, theres two elements to this.

Theres the “Teaching some thug a lesson” and theres the “having to defend yourself” by using violence, only just to stop the person attacking you.

Still, I just wish we could all go about our daily business without the seemingly constant threat these days of groups of yoofs on the street who might at any moment turn on you.

Makes me wonder what the streets of this nation will be like in ten years time…
