Discs make the bike less aero too.
Yes, on the wet descent of Hardknott in the Fred Whitton the other week I was really wishing that I was more aero and didn’t have those pesky disc brakes.
POSTED 9 MINUTES AGO # REPORT-POST

I didn’t really go fast enough down hardknott to need to slow that quickly on the whitton. Only averaged 14.9mph on the descent. Even the fastest strava time is 19.8mph!!

I didn’t realise that better brakes stop people over cooking it into corners when they are racing. that will be why no ever crashes in bad weather in corners in F1 or Moto GP……

Oh hold on….

Shaved more speed off before the corner, so he’s not relying on panic braking mid corner when everything gets rather squirrely? The issue is as much that braking on carbon rims is pretty shit in the wet (as DR says) I’d say!

Sorry, don’t see how better brakes would have given him better foresight to slow down more. Fact is he was trying to open a gap on the bunch and therefore was trying to carry as much speed as possible into the corners. As it goes his excess speed in very low grip conditions meant he was running wide for fear of slipping off if he leant it over anymore. He could have slowed down more with the brakes he had but chose not too as he was trying to go as fast as possible.

It’s a well known feature of the roads in the giro that they are like glass in the rain.

As others have said I live in an area of steep hills (the lakes) and I ride rim brakes. If the weather is bad I’m not chucking into the corners on descents so hard I need to panic brake. If you’re racing in bad conditions they will help but only if you ride to the limits of tyres. In this case the guy was past the limits of the tyres.

i wonder if Alexandre Geniez would have preferred discs yesterday at the Giro?

Have you watched that video?

the issue in the video is not the strength of his brakes but the fact that road was so slippy he couldnt lean the bike over.

Explain how more powerful brakes would have helped in that situation?

Training peaks basic will give you a TSS score from your power meter. You can also get a TSS score from Garmin Connect. Actually thinking about it TSS is one of the available data fields on an Edge 500.

Just as a heads up. You definitely shouldnt be washing nanoflex or your Gabba in waterproofing washing stuff. The kit isn’t ‘waterproof’ and doesn’t need treating in this way. Wash it with regular powder and no conditioner. If the water repellancy is starting to wear off Castell reccomend lightly ironing the fabric.

Great kit though.

It’s a day I’m talking about. Not a fortnight plus you can go skiing outside of term time whereas the TDF only finishes in London on that particular day (and it’s only been to the UK twice before in 100 years!)

POSTED 2 HOURS AGO #

Has it only been twice in a 100 years? Are you sure?
1974, 1994, 2007 and 2014….

It is as hard as you want to make it. If you turn up for a nice day out and a comfortable ride with out worrying about the time it’s a lovely day out. If you set yourself a target that is gonna stretch you then it is a world of hurt. Riding at a decent pace for 95 miles then hitting Hardknott is never going to be easy.

Or try paying for a genuine version? Works for me and thousands of others I believe.

Had it done in my 20’s. No hassle, no problems and certainly no counselling.

Me ‘I want the snip, I have 3 kids don’t want any more’
Doc ‘What if something happens’
Me ‘They are kids not animals, if one of them dies I won’t be replacing them and if me and the mrs split up I will be crippled by the CSA so won’t be able to afford any more anyway’
Doc ‘fair enough’

Job done inside 6 weeks and I even got to choose if I had a general or local anaesthetic. General FTW!!

Good luck.

The Fred isn’t really about doing every tough climb though. It also missed out Wall End when it finished in Coniston which would have been a right kick in the pants after Hardknott/Wrynose. Now it finishes in Grasmere they could have chucked Red Bank on top of Wall End as well. Even if they didn’t want to send people down Red Bank and through Grasmere they could have sent people right at the junction back down to Skelwith Bridge.

For me, I preferred the original course as it has lost Hawkshead Hill at the beginning and Oxen Fell at the finish. Certainly an ‘easier’ course now but to be fair if you finish it then the addition of these two extra climbs wouldn’t have stopped you anyway. Its just going to be faster now.

I rode the raid pyrenean years ago on 39/53 with a 12-25 cassette. I would say that I felt over geared on stuff like the portet d’aspet and the col du marie blanque. Tourmalet and aubisque were fine.

If you’ve been to the Alps previously then the Pyrenean climbs are usually shorter and steeper for comparison.

If you’ve got a 39/53 would suggest an 11 or 12-28 is a cheaper option than splashing on compact.

I’ve not readd the report and am in no way defending a day dreaming driver but as I said before, it was no place for a race.

I seem to remember it being windy and seeing the riders wobble about all over the place. I can also clearly remember thinking there was bound to be an accident. The organisers should take some responsibility in my opinion as it was not a suitable route.

I havent read the report…. dont worry it hasnt stopped you having an opinion!

It would actually be safer to organise a race along the hard shoulder of the M6 really.
Posted 3 minutes ago # Report-Post

I am sure time trials would be a lot safer if they were run with their own lane free from traffic. Why dont you put it forward to your time trial secretary for consideration at your next CTT district meeting?

To be fair you can spout on a mountain bike forum about the rights and wrongs of time trialling on dual carriage ways but if want a proper debate take it over to the time trialling forum. I am sure they would be more than happy to discuss your well researched and reasoned debate.

The mountain forecast tomorrow on met office don’t look great.

Weather

Little change for Saturday, remaining cloudy and very wiindy with further periods of snow, again this mostly across eastern upslopes. Some drier interludes expected across the west towards Cockermouth and Ravenglass. Strong winds leading to buffeting and severe wind chill, expect gales on higher summits.
Visibility

Moderate occasionally good across the west, poor or very poor still in snow across the east.
Hill fog

Extensive down to 450 metres across the east and perhaps down to 300 metres in prolonged snow, otherwise more broken down to 650 metres across the west.

Maximum winds above 500m

Easterly 40 mph gust 60 mph

Temperature
Valleys Zero Celsius
900 m Minus 7 Celsius
Freezing level 150 metres

Maybe he is. I was just saying that I wouldn’t.

Who would pay to ride a trail centre? I wouldn’t. I might pay someone to organise an event on one though. I might even pay someone to organise an event on bridleways. You don’t pay for the privilege of access to the route, you pay for the organisation of the event.

Its a 500 mile round trip for me so wont be too happy if it isn’t worth the petrol money

I wouldn’t drive 20 miles to do the Whinlatter Challenge, even if the weather was good. Pay £25 to ride a Trail Centre? No thanks…

Maybe he is intending racing rather than riding it? Especially if it is part of a race series

Junior race scheduled for tomorrow at Whinlatter is cancelled.

Cancelled race

I am not fussed if Sundays event is on or off but I will be mighty pissed if I get up there and they call it off. I think they may try and put something on to avoid any issues with returning the £18,590 that has been taken in entry fees. What that something is I dont know because parking is not great at the best of times and there is no way the fire road the use for parking is going to be navigable with any sort of snow covering.

Yes its still on and no there are no places left. The final details so there will be no entries on the day.

At the moment I think that might be academic as there is plenty of snow at higher levels and the forecast isn’t great. I am keeping my eyes on the website for further updates as if the snow hits then it will be a battle to get to the start at 320M let alone up to the top of the course at 500M.

I’m entering this year as well. Wondering if I haven’t thought about it enough. I was just gonna turn up with my bike, a pocket full of trail mix, and ride

I’m pretty sure my bike goes way more than 100miles between services and brake pads normally, can’t see why that day would be any different…

Will follow this thread with some interest though, I’m worried now (well, thinking I should think about it anyway)

Last year was pretty good weather so brake wear wasn’t an issue. The year before I went through a set of brake pads in 36 miles. I normally get a good 18 months out of the same pads in the lakes. I didn’t believe it until it happened and there was plenty of stories of people going through the pads and backing plates etc.

Broken brake pads

So just a new cassette and chain?

Isn’t the hub narrower? I can’t imagine the rear mech would accommodate the wider range… Have to wait and see I suppose.

The hub is wider so you’d need Cassette, Chain and hub. The hub is now the same width as Campag so 11 speed wheels just need a different freehub.

The mech can cope with the increased range. Confirmation it can be done here right at the bottom of the article

Couple of points on the Ultegra Di2, the battery is usually good for 600-1,000 miles on a charge. It warns you when it is getting low and it still has 125 miles of shifting when it gives the minimum charge light. If you carry on riding it past that 125 miles then it goes into limp home mode. It takes 60-90 minutes to charge from empty to fully charged so there really is no reason for it to ever be an issue. The battery can take 500 cycles so the battery itself is good for 300,000 to 500,000 miles. I would think that everything else on the bike might be somewhat tired by that point.

Also it is worth mentioning that although Ultegra is 10 speed at the moment the change to 11 speed is expected to be a firmware update rather than different mechs/shifters etc.

I have to say it is fantastic to use, like having brand new cables on your shifters but with no degradation of performance over time.

Thought this might of been about people thieving from drop bags.

Thanks to whoever helped themselves to my brand new innertube and C02 canister from my 50 mile drop bag. I had my full name and race number in red and massive font on paper inside the clear bag with both showing outside on both sides so absolutely no chance of someone doing it accidently. 👿

On the gel wrappers front I didnt see many, 6-12 at the most. Certainly not enough to suggest it was anything other than accidental.

Just an update. My bike has still not left germany and the only contact I have had is through phoning the UK service line (which at the moment is a 30 to 1 hit ratio. ie 30 unanswered calls for 1 answered call). All they can tell me is it has passed QC and is now awaiting dispatch. Still can’t tell me when that will but they expect it will be this week. Bearing in mind they originally expected to dispatch it in 2-5 working days and then changed there minds to early this week i am not getting my hopes up until I have the email telling me it has been dispatched.

So in stock bike ordered 14th August and still waiting……

smuttiesmith

I ordered my canyon on 14th August which was an in stock express bike. Got confirmation email on 16th August stating week 34 delivery. That was the last I heard. Phoned canyon UK on Friday to find out what was happening. My bike is still in germany, it’s been picked and is in QC prior to being dispatched. Apparently they are flat out at the moment so my bike is gonna be dispatched early next week so should have it before next weekend. That’s a week behind schedule but to be fair I can live with that.
