    1st world problem – SOLVED! :D

I’d prefer a 32/48 chainset, which is what’s holding me back at the minute. 34/32 gearing is only just low enough for unloaded up here in the Dales IMO.

Is it because they’re not available OEM yet?

Got all of the cut-off times and route and feeling a lot more confident now. Also told if you make all of the cut-offs you have until 17:30 to finish :-)

    Start = 8:15am

    Hampton Court Bypass
    Description:27 Miles – 892 ft – 11:10am
2 hours 35 mins = 10.5 mph average required to here

    Leith Hill By-Pass
    Description: 53 miles 1846ft – 13:20
5 hours 5 mins = 10.5 mph average from start

    Box Hill By-pass
    Description:67 miles – 2896ft – 14:45
    6hours 30 mins = 10.5 mph average from start

    Finish
    100 miles – 17:30 – 4441ft
    9hours 15 mins – 11mph average from start

A hilly 60 planned for this Saturday. If we manage 11 mph average on that including stops then we should be fine

About 25% more expensive but I’ll add to the list to have a look at cheers

So a flat 60 miles in just less than 6 hours completed today, wife’s start time is 20 mins before mine so hopefully should catch her by Richmond park.

First attempt at drafting on a flat stretch went ok at 16-17 mph.

5 weeks to go so a hilly 60 next week followed by a flat 75 the week after with the midweek rides as they are and hopefully we will beat the cut-off times at Box/Leith Hill and get to complete the whole course.

Finally got her kit and bike setup sorted too so good progress today.

Haven’t looked at it personally but I would trust the owners answer if I asked him.

Tel no. is 01282 850500 for the garage and one of the boys will get Neil to call you. (He’s semi-retired so not there every day)

If you’re still looking for an mx5 and are in the North West I know if one going for 2k which is the owner of my loval garages daughters car.

If you want details let me know and I’ll put you in touch with him.

Smokey, try e-mailing them and explaining, worst case they say “tough”, more likely they will give you an option.

Already done as was told no can do

Off round the Fylde coast on Saturday in search of flatter roads to see how that impacts our average speed.

I’m riding ther course with my wife. It will be her first 100 mile road ride. So far we have been training solidly for 8 weeks.

2 x 1 hour high intensity rides in the eveings after work and one longer ride at the weekend. We have been averaging 11 mph on the longer rides on routes that have been 40 – 45 miles with 2,500ft – 3,500ft of climbing in them. I genuinely don’t think Box Hill will unduly trouble her – we have done much harder in training, Leith Hill may involve a short stop halfway up but should be manageable.

Ironically if you’d said you’d do it in 5 hours you’d have probably been let off the leash at 6am. The downside being you’d have been swamped by the next 1-2 hours riders, some of whom are likely to be very quick but lacking in common sense when it comes to passing.

If we had known this we would have done – we’re better at staying out of the way than drafting.

I average between 13-15mph in fairly hilly Devon.

I averaged 20mph in the middle of a hurricane on the ride London bertha edition. It really is a fast course.
Unfortunately drafting isn’t one of her strong points

Or turn up early. Not sure the marshalls care that much.

If this is genuinely the case then we will but we have been given a start area and a wave – won’t the marshalls know if you are in the wrong one?

8.5 hours is nearly 12 mph average spped and that’s without stops.

7 hours is over 14 mph without stops.

I don’t think the closed roads effect will be that good.

I’m told the queues at the feed stations are always appalling, and OK we will be self-sufficient for food and water but there will always be the need for a bog stop at some point so we are going to have to go quicker than that.

When entering you are told there is an 8.5 hour time limit, at no point do they tell you that you may have less time than this.

Not being able to complete the 100 miles makes the event totally pointless when you are raising money for charity.

We would have chosen a different event if a 7 hour time limit had been given when entering.

8:30 despite telling them we would need the full 8.5 hours to complete the ride.
    Utter fucknuggets

Usually the quick people get sent out first and the people who need more time later. The broad idea is then the people aiming for 4-6 hours are long gone before the slower people arrive at the climbs. If they reversed it, you’d end up with almost everyone arriving at Leith Hill at the same time or, if they randomised it like at an event I did recently, you have the first 5-10km with loads of VERY dodgy overtaking before the order sorts itself out a bit.

I understand this but why ask you how long you need and then ignore the information you give them?

Why not say from the ouset that you might only have 7 hours to complete?

If they had we wouldn’t have bothered entering. When entering they tell you that you have a limit of 8.5 hours to complete the 100 this is what we have trained towards and I doubt we can knock an 1.5 hours off our time for a 100 mile ride in the space of a month.

I’m 5’7″ on a 54cm Saracen Hack running vittoria voyager Hyper in 700 x 38 size – Cant imagine needing anything more comfortable and they’re not stupid heavy. Get a bit of toe overlap though as the head angle is still fairly road bike normal on my bike – some of the newer gravel bikes have a bit more rake or a slacker head angle which would help with this

It’s not the 150 miles that got me you it’s the 10,000ft of climbing.

Just done a 2.5 dayer from Whitehaven to Tynemouth.

I would have appreciated something a little lighter than my Saracen Hack and a 32T on the back would have helped.

(I had a 30T and needed to be out of the saddle too often for my liking – you may be are probably fitter than me though).

Is it getting worse after you’ve got it hot? If so the air leak in the inlet rubbers might only be there once the tiny little cracks in ther perished rubber have expanded.

What state were the carb gaskets and o-rings in when you stripped them down – or did you replace with new?

If it has to be a 125 then either a tw125 or a Mutt. I rode an MZ.125 for 2 years and basically rang it’s neck everywhere as it was so gutless. As soon as I got the heat heights of a gpz305 I felt a lot safer.

Got a mini, does what it claims to do. Some of the functions require you to RTFM, battery life seems good for an all day ride and build quality seems ok

    smokey_jo

Cracked carb inlet rubbers – they perish with age and as they get hot the cracks can widen could be a place to start. Varnish or much in the float chambers and jets if it’s been idle for a while.

    Stale fuel?

Didin’t Suzuki 4’s of that era have regulator/rectifier issues or was that just the gs750?

    How cheap?

The Lezyne Mini GPS is doing all right for me.

If you’re happy to use the phone as the GPS cateye do a unit which displays all of your data on a speedo sized unit on your bars.

Just changed my compact outer to a 46. Can be in the outer ring a lot more. I span out at about 28 mph with a 12-28 on the back. I think an 11-30 block would be perfect for round here and my weedy legs. (DALE’S)

I’m also for the first time in my life tempted to get a test ride on a Harley 8O the new Street Rod doesn’t look awful and from first reviews sounds capable of going round a corner !

The R9T urban be also looks good though, but it’s too spendy for me :/

In around 3 years time I’m hoping there a glut of these types of bikes ending up on eBay

I think the problem with the running on the Honda is more to do with gummed and unbalanced carbs. I’ll check the electrics a look at though too as cleaning carbs is not a favoutite job – especially 4 little tiny ones

The front brake is a swinging caliper with only one active piston. Even when it had been stripped and a new pivot pin, fresh fluid, seals and piston it offered naff all retardation. The rear drum however could lock the rear with a tap of the toe!

Duke 390 here after a similar amount of time off bikes to yourself.

Plenty enough zip to have fun on the twistys and good position for in town riding too. Feet up U-turns are a doddle on it.

Had a test ride on an xsr700 though and that engine is peachy and the yellow speedblock does it for me having grew up watching the trans-am race series.

It’s more likely that my dad’s 79 400/4 will be my next though – if we can ever get it to run reliably and the front brake to be a lot more effective than it is.

Been running voyager hyper in 38c for a few rides now and seem to be great rolling, are very comfy at 70psi with tubes. No punctures to date but early days yet I suppose.

Didn’t know there was a tubeless version, I’d buy them without hesitation if could find some

Still the right side of 13 stone so although not a racing snake I don’t think my weight was a problem.

Measured the rim bed today and it’s only 20mm so I think we have the culprit.

Anyway some new (to me) wheels have arrived with wider rims so all should be good going forward.

Cheers guys, all good input, i keep reading about 25psi pressure that everyone runs on tubeless so i guess the tyres were to flexy for what i was aiming for.

    smokey_jo
    Full Member

Rims have been wrapped in 3 layers of tape, 1 central, one to the left of centre and 1 to the right of centre so whole bed covered but not interfering with the bead hook (applied to squeaky clean rim bed and pulled tight as a -insert own similie here-) I wasn’t losing air through the rim or tyre so I’m going with narrow rim bed combined with flexible sidewalls has caused the issue. It didn’t so much burp as completly roll off the rim when going round a bend on the rear one. The front one simply kept burping air out very few miles.

The tyres had seated on the rims with a nice loud ping too…

I don’t want to go narrower on the tyres so I think I’m going to look for some new wheels before splashing out on more tyres.
