deluded. sorry but just sticky saying “anyone cycling in area” and local police # would have been fine, by now anyone would have seen national/international coverage. kid obviously dead. discussion (same crap we hear every time) can be had on dailymail.co.uk or wherever.

edit: alright, it’s an emotional issue for lots of people. the reference to BrassEye was intended as criticism of the media, not anyone here.
you were absolutely right to post this thread, but by now, it’s serving no purpose. just like most of the media coverage. unfortunately.

i can’t stand stories like this because of the way they’re covered. not thrilled to see this here tbh, unless for example it’s likely a cyclist would have been in the area, can’t see the relevance in this forum. just so much voyeurism, urgh.
time to go watch BrassEye paedophile special?
edit: not talking about people in local area, those searching etc., where obviously it’s very relevant.

“NOTE: Due to the improved connectors on this new model, it cannot be used with earlier Magicshine products. “
ahh no, there was nothing wrong with old one. and £129 is not crazy cheap anymore. i saw the good review in a mag. anyone compared vs 872?

you can go from the Petersfield Heath down the B2146 to Buriton and in the back of the park, only prob with that is you start more than half way around the trail! pssst free parking too. or (bike only) from Ramsdean side to roundabout and up old A3 (disused), both longer and more scenic.

hmmm you guys with Pitches and Megas need to MTFU, or buy an ‘AM’ bike that works 😉 i’ll happily ride my EG just as far as my hardtail and not really be more tired overall.
now taking a massive coil shocked beast up a mountain to bash it down, respect to that. that’s like the old clunker days, getting back to the roots maaaaan.

yep, Hope’s best products are the simple ones, wheels (the hub machined from one piece, couple of bearings, negotiated good deal on stan’s rims), their stems, seatcollars etc. their brakes are not competitive (sorry fans, you bought them for the look/brand). i also get impression their dev is more by trial and error than CAD, this doesn’t work well for a seatpost in the current market, may have done 5 years ago when just GD + Joplin!

yeah can’t see that being a good move for hope at all. the way they deal with after-sales (good btw, direct with consumer) would cause them a big headache for what would be an expensive product, they’re better putting their energy into tweaking their successful wheels etc to keep hold of or further solidify that market, than trying to compete with the big guys like SRAM/Fox on dropper posts where they probably would end up with a £400 post anyway. imho.

that’s an achievement, as Treks can’t be sold not-ready-to-ride (mail order, or whatever).

XT is pretty bling, the chavs know it’s good.

What’s so great about XT shifters then? (Serious Q).

what he’s done is make a very steep HA (and dangerous front brake?)

the only one i’d consider at this point* is the GD, and that’s much too expensive for what it is..

do not want air/oil in my seatpost ffs, it’s not suspension, it doesn’t need compression/rebound control.

nah just a palette that was on top, reverse far enough up lane to be out of sight, quick look around, then shove it all out back and off you go, easy peasy, kaching. not much chance of getting caught ‘specially if it wasn’t your stuff.

yeah there’s a track near me that gets this a lot. keep meaning to get council number and phone it but never do.

problem is that getting of rubbish is now really expensive. a lot/most of it is dumped by dodgy tradespeople i.e. someone pays lots of money to get rid of their waste and the bloke takes and dumps it for free somewhere like this. easy money. then we all pay for the council to clear it up (contractors could i guess even be same guys, which would be even worse!). pisses me off too.

ah cool round holes here 🙂

water doesn’t get into the bb much if well greased, it gets into frame anywhere else though and drains to the bb shell, and can’t escape, rusting the bb bearings. isn’t the centre tube there to prevent this though? hmm maybe it doesn’t matter too much. on a steel frame it matters.

that would have to be a dog poo cruise missile to make that entry.

anyone know about preventing stress cracks from cut/drilled aluminium? you just file around the hole or what? not worth worrying about? ditto with adding bottle cage mounts.

a small crack will start from that hole and grow and grow and grow until the whole bike cracks into pieces.

nah good idea, just measure where the lowest point really is before you flip bike upside down and drill. i have a few holes in one now..

    whytf isn’t this standard?

i said probably cos not sure if the extra alloy in hub offsets the reduced steel in spoke. it does? must be **** all in it.

as i said, if you do remote expedition type riding, maybe send it back – otherwise pack the spares and enjoy the nice looking wheel.

    smiff

    er might be unavailable even.

don’t like the SP design, it’s not really solving a problem (increase lateral stiffness, spokes failing on J-bend), and creating a more serious one (spokes unwinding, not getting spares) and probably adding weight too! all about bling imho.

    smiff

i’d keep it, unless you’re going to be doing any seriously remote rides, where SP spokes (esp. 29?) might not be unavailable.

i bought one SP ‘cos it looks nice, but wouldn’t bother again, no real difference and slightly more likely to go slack.

ok he sounds like a top bloke. just not knowing anything about him, on face of it this study sounds a wee bit odd. regardless i think his findings are basically right, drivers probably do give women, those without helmets, those weaving all over the road etc more room. not sure what we’re meant to do with this information mind..

    the flip side is this

“I’ve also had a couple of biking accidents where my helmet didn’t play a role, but if you get thrown from your bike it’s not hard to see that your head is extremely vulnerable. My GF works with traumatic brain injury patients at a local hospital, and words can hardly describe how devastating these injuries can be, or how instantly your life can change forever. So other people can do what they want, but I’m not going out biking without the helmet. It takes all of 5 seconds.”

basically, choose to wear a helmet, but don’t force people to wear helmets.
i was very glad to be wearing mine and still got a headache last week when i landed… on my head (an off road accident).

problem is, it could just be transvestites that drivers avoid, or ginger wigs, or women with massive hairy legs, or some other things. 2300 measurements, but only one “woman”.

most of the high rated comments look fine to me, and in line with CTC position (and mine btw). but!

Another experiment someone did in Britain was to fit an ultrasonic measuring system to a bicycle to measure how close cars were passing. They tried riding in various different manners, for example further from the kerb (tr.US: curb), with helmet, without helmet, dressed as a woman etc. He found that as a hemetless woman, cars gave him the greatest amount of room, and as a helmeted man, the least amount of room. http://www.drianwalker.com/overtaking/overtakingprobrief.pdf [drianwalker.com]

some great stuff there. emphasis mine.

So rather than a helmet law there should be a law that cyclists should dress as women. I could go with that!

seatpost mounted guards on long travel full suss have to be miles away from tyre. seatflap thing looks pretty ineffective also for same reason.

any seatstay mounted guards for fs bikes? not sure, could work? depends on suspension design a bit.

yeah waterproof shorts i like except when it’s raining. they keep wind out and protect legs, but when they wet through, that’s awful chafing hell.

edit: just looked at my bike, with a horst link/true four bar, the dropout is fixed relative to the seatstay. guard on seatstay would definitely work better than anything else i’ve tried, does anyone make one? probably needs four mount arms, 2 each side, to be stable. one pair go down to axle, one joining higher up the seatstay?

will try the minimus, as looks suitable for non-bike stuff too, about 10 black mediums left (no greens.. what’s with terrible colour selection here!), with the voucher should be £75. hopefully it stays waterproof for a while (i’d be happy satisfied with a year). all these thin tops are soo shreddable for biking in though :/

easy way to check you’re preloading it right is to try turning the spacers underneath the stem. if they turn, it just ain’t tight enough.

Hope recent D and F cups don’t work like that, they have a normal size split crown and a small bearing, the adapter is the cup itself. dunno what headtube your bike has though!

totally agree, its just unless you’re racing not sure why you’d want less grip. unless its to improve balance/skills… probably a good idea for me actually.

it doesn’t matter where bike made, just where/who support is. On-one uk have been excellent, couldn’t ask for better support, and they mnfr in Taiwan i think. i’ve been emailing back and forth with the design guy (Brant, who found me). and the shop, and it’s not even like they’re expensive.

tbf, if you ride the same place a lot, you will learn how to handle your tyre (any tyre). so repetition is a lot of it?

i like to ride different surfaces (sand, clay, loam) and it’s hard to remember how each tyre behaves in each condition, plus wet or dry, and yeah, i’m not that well balanced either. hence the minions most of the time :p
