I use Mapyx Quo (free download), purchase OS tiles for the area I want. Plot my route, print it out on A4 and take that with me. 50k OS tiles are currently 85p + VAT for 40km square tile.

I’ve got one from ‘Hatchbag’ for my Focus hatch. Bit pricey, but well made, fits well and still in good shape after a couple of years.

There’s a few tyre pressure calculators around. I’ve used this one in the past

<span style=”font-size: 12.8px;”>http://mtb.ubiqyou.com/</span>

Just put in rider weight, tubeless or not, tyre diameter and width and it’ll give you an estimate for your front and rear tyre pressures. Useful as a guide pressure to start with and then adjust if you feel the need.

In no particular order I’ll sit and watch any of these, no matter how often I’ve seen them before:
Airplane
Tremors
Serenity
Life of Brian

Stayed here about 3 years ago for 2 nights.

Berlin Mitte – Generator Hostel

No frills, but was very clean, cheap and conveniently placed (close to the city centre and the trams run down the street outside).

Born and bred South Cumbrian. Well, technically it was still Lancashire when I was born, so about 98% South Cumbria, 2% Lancashire.

Have you read the Endymion novels? They follow on the story after Hyperion.

Ann Leckie’s Ancillary series is good, as is Hugh Howey’s Wool series. They may not be quite as heavy going as Dune though. Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars Trilogy is great too.

Frugal Roleur is another option. It only compares prices on Chain Reaction, Wiggle, ProBikeKit, Ribble, Evans Cycles and Merlin Cycles though.

I got a Skeen 9.0 last Autumn. As it’s my first full suspension I can’t really comment on how it compares to similar machines, but I’m very happy with it.

I can’t comment on the Swoop, but I did buy a Skeen in the Autumn. Haven’t had much chance to ride it, but so far I’m happy. Seems a nice, well spec’d bike. But I’m new to FS, so not the best person to comment on how good it rides compared to other bikes.

Delivery took about 10 days from Bike-Discount.de. 2-3 days build time, approx 1 day to get to Manchester Airport, about 6 days from Manchester to Cumbria!

Can’t give you much advice about routes up there, but I do know that most of Whinlatter South Loop is closed at the moment for maintenance.

Latest News (23/11/2015 16:01)
The Altura Trail South Loop is closed. Repair work is continuing to improve drainage and carry out resurfacing. The trail will be closed for approximately two months to make sure it is fully dried out but this does depend on weather conditions in the coming weeks. Riding the trail too soon could cause more damage so we appreciate your patience. Updates will appear here but you can continue to enjoy the Altura North Loop and the Quercus trail which are both fully open.

Never had any problems, but I generally stick to the places I’m allowed (i.e. not footpaths) when deeper into the Lakes.

If you’re thinking of riding looking for accommodation outside of Barrow it’s worth bearing in mind that the A590 is very busy and the A595 between Askam and Grizebeck is truly awful.

In Grizedale it’s worth trying to plan a route with a few of the following sections of bridleway.
Grandad, Dad and the Dentist (also known as 3 Witches)
Lawsons Park
Parkamoor to High Nibthwaite
The Riverbed (runs North to South ish)
Red Mist
The Fox Run

Barrow to Millom in 20 minutes? Only if you fly across the estuary. I reckon it’ll be nearer 40 minutes.

Back to the subject in hand. Lots of great mtb riding if you’re willing to travel a little. There’s not a great deal in the Furness peninsula, but pretty anywhere beyond it you can find interesting bridleways (especially to the north). It’s worth looking up some of the bridleways in Grizedale as well.

Just gone from Xperia SP to Zperia Z3 Compact myself. Very similar in size, but a much better phone. And as dannybgoode says of the Z3, the battery frequently lasts for 2 days.

Been in Grizedale today. Lots of Enduro riders out practising. Lots of them coming UP the bottom section of Three Witches (also known as Grandad, Dad and the Dentist) and also coming UP Lawson Park bridleway. Don’t know about Red Mist or the Fox Run I’m afraid.

Just a thought, but is it a new chain? I had problems with a new chain on a worn cassette. Would a worn chain on a new cassette also cause a problem?

Stupid idea. I live right on the border of the Lake District National Park. So would that mean I’d have to pay to cross the road?

Might be worth considering setting one up, if only so you have a voice. The Lake District Mountain Bike Association was set up about 12 months ago after some trail ‘maintenance’ was carried out.

From the LDMBA website:

About LDMBA
Formed in March 2014 in response to the way local authorities were carrying out trail surfacing work. Local mountain bikers became upset by the unsympathetic nature of the surfacing work and by the lack of communication between the local authorities and regular trail users. The formation of the association was welcomed by local authorities and has since rapidly evolved, we have a following of over 850 riders and a 12 person committee with the following aims and objectives……

Mission

The LDMBA promotes socially and environmentally responsible use of trails. We feel that current Rights of Way legislation does not represent the current demands of all user groups.

The Lake District Mountain Bike Association Aim.

To be the representative body for off road cycling in the Lake District.

Our Objectives

To be the point of communication between Landowners, local authorities and the off-road cycling community with a particular interest in the following areas –

– Improved access for off-road cycling in the lakes

– Ensuring that maintenance of Rights of Way in the National Park considers the varied needs of off-road cyclists

– Promote awareness within the cycling community on Environmental issues

– Promote good practice for off road cycling in the National Park.

Our Role

The following diagram attempts to show the existing framework for consultation of users of the National Park and how the LDMBA will be used to ensure the requirements of off road cyclists are considered.

I swapped from Canon EOS D500 to the EOS M recently and I’m really happy with the decision so far. Although I haven’t had too much chance to use it yet. There is one downside however, the Auto-Focus is sloooooooow. Which is fine for me as I don’t tend to shoot moving targets!

There is a new version of the M coming out soon (version 3), which is rumoured to fix the AF speed though (around £600 with zoom lens I think).

I had a similar problem at work with a Windows 7 Laptop. I used the guide here, which worked. There do appear to be similar guides on this site for other versions on Windows as well (links in ‘related articles’ below the guide).

I see your point smett72, but…

define long queue
define slow
define safe place to pull in

and if you’re in a group, even when riding together, you’re still individual riders and communication is not always possible/easy.

Like I said, our club, and most others, will do this, but it is actually quite tricky, and just because you see a layby doesn’t mean it is appropriate or possible to stop in.

I completely agree that it’s not always easy/appropriate/safe to stop. But in the interests of trying to be considerate and not antagonizing other road users I would like to see people try.

Horse riders, tractor drivers etc usually pull in when it is appropriate to do so, cyclists should be willing to do the same when necessary.

In fact, it’s even given as advice in the Highway Code (No. 169).

169
Do not hold up a long queue of traffic, especially if you are driving a large or slow-moving vehicle. Check your mirrors frequently, and if necessary, pull in where it is safe and let traffic pass.

Can’t see why this shouldn’t apply to cyclists, whether they be in a group or not.

In particular – Stop judging rides by how technical they are and try to enjoy just being out.

Completely agree with teasel on this.

Also on the different challenge front, I get just as much satisfaction from getting to the top of a climb as I doing descending it.

Shimano do sell some of their shoes in wide fitting. I’ve just got some M088’s in wide and they don’t look overly wide. In fact the 44 wide Shinamos look smaller than my normal 42 size shoes! My guess is that you’ve got the ‘wide’ ones.
