new revs and pikes are not virtually the same, they have the same damping system but thats it really. revs have lighter buld all round leading to a pound in saved weight.

i like that, especially the colour. that massive stack of headtube spacers only makes the gangly headtube look longer though but as long as it rides good then im sure you can put up with it!

717s will probably have a limited life but they are stronger thsan you might think. if it were me id be going for a set of stans flows, probably as part of a hope hoops package, unbeatable at the price really. cant fault mavics though.

those dt skewers are a PITA, nice idea but executed in plastic so limited life if you try and tighen them enough to make any difference.

    nice bike fella.

we had two of those at work, well similar; they had a static fron wheel and two levers that steered the rear axle which made skids and drifts tooooooo easy. myself and a colleague went to 'test' them down some big hills and tore the wheels to pieces. took them back to toysrus and got them replaced then banned all the kids from riding them anywhere that wasnt flat cos they are blummin mental!

As long as this entire site sits back quietly while this kind of character assassination and harassment continues not one of your opinions has any value.

im not sitting back quietly, im wetting myself!

my old man runs a 120mm qr15 float on his and has a fairly light build but nothing ridiculous; still uses 2.35 tyres, no carbon bits, hope brakes and his is 26.5lbs. its a great xc trail bike, really flatters his strengths-smooth, flowy, pedal all day type stuff.

my brother has an older one (my dads old one) and absolutely canes it. not sure how long it will last, he has taken it to the alps, snowdon etc and definitely pushes it to its limits; dented frame, stretched bb threads, new pivot bearings regulary etc. but he cant afford to replace it and with a short stem, too long fork and wide bars he has changd it in to a bit of a play bike anyway.

basically its a very versatile bike!

Bit of a hijack but i was after some lightweight cranks to fit an 83mm BB shell , anyone know of anything other than the FSA or RF atlas?

you can mod an xt chainset to fit an 83mm BB, i think there was a 'how to' on sicklines, its definitely on a pinkbike thread somewhere too. if i get time ill try and find it for you.

now with a pair of silver wellgo mg1's with ti axles.

like you mama im tempted by a silver thomson stem. maybe a silver bar too, though that might be taking it too far. silver spokes would be nice…

yep, the 2010 revs are lighter than 2009 ones due to new lower legs.

nope, its not worth ditching some perfectly good pushed pikes for them. ive got a pair of pushed pikes on my ht and a pair of 2010 revs on my fs. i notice the weight difference over my old (2009) talas 36's but think that id be struggling to notice it over the pikes if im honest.

very nice forks though, i got mine for £315 so thats £185 saved off rrp to get them pushed at first service.

i usually find buzzing the stopped/ injured rider as fast as possible whilst yelling obscene abuse almost guarantees they will never do it again. in fact they may never ride again, more trails for me!

sorry for not contributing anything sensible but really, whats the point when you have cocks like edukator blowing everything out of proportion with no sense of context? it was an expression of frustration, not a demonstration of arrogance and self importance you angry little man.

i know, ive seen stuff that lightly used or even new being sold at almost new prices, seems crazy to me. i was after a set of forks recently and despite the fact i could get a new pair of 2010 revelations with maxle for £315 pople were still asking £260-£275 for a pair of second hand pikes or revelations from the previous year.

some people seem to think that the 2nd hand value is somehow related to what they paid for it way back when, rather than pricing against what is available now. another example was a guy seling some stans rims on hope hubs. he was asking £250 the pair when winstanleys were doing them at £235. when i pointed this out he said 'i paid £350 4 months ago so they are worth at least £250'. i understand why he would be reluctant to lose so much cash but really, why would anyone even consider a deal like that.

i know people will say if you dont like the price, dont buy/haggle/whatever but the classifieds did used to be a great place for a bargain; cheap prices to avoid the hassle of ebay etc. doesnt seem that way so much these days.

simonfb, i suspect that your techniques are ingrained from lots of riding over a fair few years; if you were to receive some coaching of some form on how to use flat pedals to your advantage, weighting your bike etc. it might go some way to improving your self confessed limited skillz, err, dood.

that said, i know you love your riding just the way it is and thats what counts, right?

learning how under rotation and riding on your feet work is IMO essential for anyone wanting to advance their handling in fast, technical situations. bottle, quick reactions and fluke will only get you so far!

as for the brake thing, one finger here too. i think the hope m4's with the tech lever are great for 1 finger braking as due to their relatively long lever blade you can get really good leverage which then allows you to run them pretty close to the bars and still get more than enough power. i often get comments on how far inboard i run mine but it really works for me. give it a bash!

levers are now angled up a bit and wound closer to the bar, this pic was pre-setup. i run my brakes 7cm inboard from the grips then do the rest by feel.

fitted a pair of pedals on the wrong sides so that pedalling tightened rather than loosened them.

think this is a fairly common think for the 456, my bro and my old man both got terrible chainsuck on theirs. i them a retro style chainsuck plate on to an iscg tab and problem solved. i dont understand why though, they were both using new shimano stuff.

i love my five. its isnt any kind of revelation when it comes down to it, its just a good tool for the job. people get carried away with how good they are IMO. i think its quite a predictable bike to ride and thats why peole love it; they can feel what its doing and react to it. single pivots give you a lot of info from the pedals and a slack head angle gives you time to react to surprise bumps, lumps and drops without going over the bars. this inspires confidence so riders push their boundaries a bit more. its a good bike, but theres plenty of them around these days. i wont be getting rid of mine any time soon but if it got nicked id definitely test what was out there before buying another one.

are you really not going to buy any bikes for a year? i know you are tying to cut back on being a serial bike swapper but what am i going to look at for the next year? could you not have a self enforced 2 week 'cooling off' period bwtween seeing something you want and stumping up the cash?

ive got a convert and only use it for commuting really because its really not very breathable. you might struggle to find stock of the gore phantom, i just have. for sub £100 i think you couldnt go wrong with the pace 3×3; i think you have to get it from them direct these days but its a great fabric (event) and a simplistic design to keep the cost down- ideal for performance at the best price i reckon.

yeah by weight i meant viscosity. most fork manuals refer to oils by weight, eg rockshox 15wt, fox 7wt etc…
