its not hard to set up and then you basically do it again once you have replaced the spoke, or you can be canny and try to remove and replace the spoke without letting the nipple slip out of place but tbh its so easy i wouldnt bother.

coffeeking, you dont need to backpedal for the chain to come off without a bottom roller, you just have to pin it(TM) 8)

ive found it much more of an issue with full sussers not having a bottom roller than hardtails, probably due to the greater change in chain tension. or something…

is it cos you drop your chain a lot rob? having a faff with your front mech and shortening the chain will help too.

what i_ache said, you save 300-500g depending on which guide you use.

the bottom roller definitely makes a difference in the rough stuff. if you think how much your chain bounces around even when its run tight, which if you are going downhill it probably isnt that tight because you would be lower down the cassette, its easy to see how your chain can get dropped. a bottom roller means that all that bouncing around doesnt affect the chains line as it leaves the chainring.

for me the whole point of going 1×9 was to keep the chain on, even run short and tight id still drop it in the rocky stuff all the time. good for fitness too, though thats more of a byproduct than a reason.

if you arent dropping your chain all the time then just dont bother.

ive tightened a cassette lockring with a pair of scissors before, you dont need them particularly tight. id get it nipped up at the bike shop just to be sure though…

i think 500-550 sounds fair, dont get knocked down beyond that though unless you really need the sale.

i reckon we wsill murder cut gate if a group as big as the last ride turn up and its remotely damp. might be best saved for later in the year?

the blacka etc route sounds interesting, not ridden there before.

ive got an idea for a route, just struggling to find a legal final descent…

is it as steep as it looks?

some people get away with it but most dont. you can just use your front mech with the limit screws set to guide the chain on the right line, or one of those mrp/e13 guides, the ones with the bottom rollers as well are for more lairy riding.

i have no practical advice or experience to offer so ill just say good luck,i admire you for giving it a go (if you do).

maybe consider a family friendly option? being a family yourselves might attract people (like myself) where the family are outdoorsy types but arent all in to biking.

hardtails are 750, fs are 785. they are great for burly muscle you bike around type riding. for singletrack speeder bike type stuff 710 would be plenty.

try it, you can always trim a bit off easy.

dunno, id try a 30 though

which doesn't replicate any real world situations anyway

other than, say, crossing a camber, getting out of ruts, riding down trails such as the beast where every rock is trying to push you off the line you want to be on, basically more aggressive stuff really. i found the harder you push them, the more they show their weakness. this was duc32's, id hate to try the sc's.

forks being cheap to pick up second hand and running more sag to get the required ride height isnt a goodf enough reason to put up with vague steering in rough stuff imo.

i doubt duc's would be overkill, they are similarly flexy in my experience.

try the new black box revs, i think you can get an adjustable one. so much stiffer and better damped than a maverick and i think the weight is similar.

they work every bit as well as stans, ive used both and set both up for mates. i trimmed a set down when my brother bought the wrong size and they still worked fine.

you lot make me feel better about having 3 lol! my 5 and sovereign are lovely and my commuter is a £300 decathlon bike. my problem is i never do a 'range' of mtb's; i just know i like em burly so always build them that way or id just end up changing stuff as i broke it. after riding my sovereign at the weekend i was weighing up selling the 5 but you have changed my mind, cheers!

    what are you building mama?

dont get me wrong jamie, id LOVE a foes at some point. just not that one! having a monocoque because its a company signature isnt a good enough reason IMO, it just looks like an exercise in trying to be different. cheers for the pics tho!

    cheers!

you could use either really. i have had a few sets of pikes over the years and think they are a great fork. they save you a pound or so over the lyriks too.

if you arent too fussy over the weight then definitely the lyriks; stiffer, better damped and more tuneability plus dh-slack head angle for when the need arises. if you weigh 17 stone then the lyriks would probably be the sensible option, im about 12.5 and can feel the extra stiffness.

    aha! i do see now.

al, how is it niche? other than being a small brand or is that what you meant?

not sure i like the whole monocoque/ hydromform-esque thing on a hardtail to be honest. it just looks like its had the shock removed! whats the thinking behind the seatstay/top tube configuration?

sounds like you after something similar to my evil. ive built it with coil u-turn lyriks, saint brakes, cranks, mech, xtr cassette, stans flow rims on pro2 hubs with a pair of ardents for genereal use and a pair of dual ply big bettys for more rocky stuff. wide bar, short stem, single ring and e13 lg1, burgtec pedals etc…

    clicky linky

it could be lighter but i wanted something i didnt have to be gentle with. the downside is ill be overbiked sometimes but, like the bfe, its actually got pretty sensible geometry with the fork wound down a touch.

have fun, those bfe's look reet nice!
