they climb great, even with a 160mm fork. i ran my lyriks at full travel all the time on mine and it gets up allsorts, even with just a 34t front and 11-32 rear. got up snowdon pretty sharpish the other week!

pedals are personal choice of course but if you are ever thinking of giving flatties a go then thats the bike to try it on.

i think you will kill those tyres in no seconds flat. i was running 2.4 ardents on mine which are a few hundred grams heavier than small block 8's. even tubeless i was pinching tears in the tyres at 30psi through the rocks. had to MTFU and go for dual plys which made it absolutely bombproof on the down and gave me proper man thighs on the climbs!

i think ive overstated the size thing somewhat, it fits me great and i wouldnt want it any smaller. i run a 50mm stem through choice rather than necessity and tried a medium out but found it a bit short with a short stem and inline seatpost fitted. perhaps i need to make this clear in my ad!

cheers all, looks like i need to revise my ad a little, its not too big for me at all, i always run a 50mm stem on anything but an xc bike. ill move the 'damage' shot further down and think about drpping the price a little!

i dunno munque, that stem still looks long to me

but I don't think I would be putting them on a trail bike, they are DH brakes. Changing pads is lot more faff than XTs; choice of replacement pads is currently limited.

how often do you change pads? 5 minutes as opposed to two minutes every few months and an extra fiver each time for decent pads is well worth amazing braking IMO.

i binned it on a dusty high speed off-camber turn on friday evening and went rolling through the bluebells and wild garlic. had my helmet cam on too but it had switched itself off a few turns back.

    ill try again this week.

i wonder how much of it is a mental thing; first time he hasnt won at lisbon in forever last weekend, struggled in quali's.

everyone knows steve is good in the mud and can hold a line but evn the best guys have a bad day. with only 6 rounds this years its going to matter all the more though.

Me too! After some serious thought though I decided that this would easily cover any dh Im likely to do anytime soon. Its had the travel reduced to 6" to drop the bb and slacken the HA. Bargain frame built up with the stuff from my HT.

i built mine up at the end of january with coil lyriks, saint gruppo etc and its 33lbs with a dual ply rear tyre. its still fine for getting around the peaks at that weight and its a riot downhill. its really reminded me that you can be just as fast as a fs (and in most cases faster) on a decent ht.

im selling my frame now as its inspired me to build something bigger and have a go at a few dh events and possibly a megavalanche. ill be sad to see it go as its been absolutely mint but with a big bike in the shed i need something a bit more xc for those less 'core' rides!

seriously, get one. its the most aggressive bike iv ever owned.

ive tried the straits and although they were comfy i dont like the fact there is no hard shell. ive never tried the evo's but they sound like they go some way to rectify this, though id still go for a proper hard shell one.

id definitely go lyriks for performance to match the vans, plus travel adjust in case you want it, and longer service intervals. lovely forks.

nah, i have to disagree. regardless of being wound up he battered the kid with a weight. you dont have to be eddikated to know that you could do some serious harm. if you cant work with yoofs then dont be a teacher.

wasnt me then, didnt see anyone else on a bike all week!

ourkidsam, yep thats the best route of the three options. take a couple of spare tubes though, the last trail back down to llanberis is so easy to pinch flat on if you miss time hopping the water bars.

2-2 1/2 is probably a fair estimate in bad conditions. last week it was clear, warm and pretty still which made it sooo much easier. couldnt believe the difference! as anyone from the peaks pootle posse will verify, im no mountain goat but 1 1/2 hrs was comfortable though we did keep moving.

teetosugars, that was probably me and my old man. it took us less than an hour and a half to get up to the summit. we only rode the bits that wouldnt have knackered us for the way down and we stopped for a sarnie 3/4 of the way up too. its a pretty gentle gradient other than the very start on the road, a section of steppy rocks just after half way, then another steep section just after you go under the railway for the last time. well worth it though.

we were pre-ban this time but last year we went mid-may, arrived at the start of the bridleway at 4:50 and met a ranger. he started to tell us off because it was before 5 but when i asked him if we were allowed to push our bikes up before 5 he said yes. we were grateful for the excuse.

even outside the ban ive never managed to blag my way on to the train though, try it very time!

cheers. id actually be looking at 1×10 so it was rear mech i was wondering about. i assumed that because 10sp fits in the same space as 9sp that the rear mech would be ok?

ive got one of them, had a go with it last night up in the peak but had the angle wrong so just shot the ground right in front of my wheel. its a shame the memory cards cost another £20 on top otherwise id have a few more but its still a bargain

i hate missing out on a good argument because i dont understand what you are arguing about.

therefore im going to pee in your shoes while you carry on talking about complicated stuff, dont mind me…

rich, i didnt like the 456's i tried either, both a normal and a summer season one, too sluggish and dead. i much preferred my chameleon for its better handling and sprightly feedback. plenty of people seem to love them though so i just put it down to personal preference.

ive since got a burly steel hardtail and its definitely the most fun bike ive owned despite its 33lb+ weight. i thought it was just that new bike feeling but its not wearing off yet.

my old man had the old one, upgraded it for a new one 2 years ago. he loves it; still the same bike but better is how he describes it – a little bit lighter, less flexy, better tyre clearance and with a slightly longer fork more suited to his general all day trail riding.

both, in the same descent if possible (think snowdon rangers path, or stuff out at bikevillage)

kitz_chris, 6 round this year, not 5. still too short though IMO

did both rangers and rhyd ddu. rhyd ddu was ok, some techy bits near the top and a good section of loose rocks, skree and lots of medium sized drop offs. it didnt press the same buttons as the rangers path though; fun from top to bottom. the only problem is its over too quick.

i dont think id bother with rhyd ddu again, the llanberis track would probably be more fun.

the new rev chassis is definitely flexier than the lyriks, i had some 15omm ones on my five and they were great but long travel xc rather than burly 'ardcore stuff.

never ridden the black box stuff, is it better than the lyriks? i really like the mission control
