s8tannorm – there's an outside chance that our grandfather's knew each other. Most of the Electra crew were transferred from the Hood and they sort of regarded each other as "sister ships".

The Hood website seems to work on the basis of people informing them whether relatives were crew. They also require some sort of proof. You don't need to submit it to them but just tell them what it is and they will add if it all stacks up.

My Grandfather was a PO II on the Hood. He was Admiral Walter Cowan's coxswain; they were apparently good friends…. in a sort of patrician to plebeian sort of way. He was my father's godfather. I have bundles of letters from him (Cowan), the HMS Hood crossing the line certificate from the world cruise in 1929 along with mentions in despatches from when he was on Electra where he had risen to the giddy heights of CPO. He was offered a commission in 1940/41 but refused it. He was a career navy man and as he had been there since he was a boy (taking a small part in the battle of Jutland in WW1) he felt his place was below decks rather than as an officer where he would be remote from the guys he felt were part of his "family".

Sadly, he didn't survive the war so I never met him. He dies when Electra went down in the Battle of Java Sea in 1942 (I think), about this time of year (28th Feb).

    War sucks doesn't it?

To turn it all around – I have always put bitter chocolate in my chilli (con carne) ****' awesome! Once again, not a new idea but a totally different taste experience.

Graham… in your job spec you also forgot to add being extremely helpful with random requests for help with C#! (We're working on encryption FOR C# at the moment!).

Given the amount of nights you seemed to be working late at the office, I'd say you have made the right move. Good luck with the job hunting.

2 road bikes, 2 mtbs. 1 of each has one gear, the other has lots of gears. 🙂

the geared ones are what you might call top end but I have more fun on, and ride more often, the one gear wonders.

    "you can't polish a turd"

Pedant Alert: Actually you can. That American program Myth Busters or something, they polished several turds to disprove that little saying. Pedant Alert off.

zaskar… budget… good one. I'd say no more than £500

    Sony A1 – I'll have a look around.

Film 4…. don't you mean Channel Shawshank Redemption? It seems to be on every bloomin' day.

I think they have lost the plot. All they seem to show are Hollywood "blockbusters " that have passed their sell by date.

That must be the most frustrating clip ever. I have got that piece of music somewhere…on vinyl and can't think who it is. Can you put me out of my misery?

Otherwise… looked a bit of a laff….. like the gurning picture btw:)

Budget is a couple of hundred for the amp. My main system is elsewhere in the house. The idea here is to have a compact system so we can have access to all our music but have as small a footprint as possible. So…CD, tuner etc are in a different room where I can actually listen as opposed to having music which has to compete with daily living. Does that make sense?

LOL at the muffinman. No Zappa/Beefheart connection behind the name is there???

cynical-al the Missions….. I have had them for years and like the sound quality. The room the system is going in hasn't been finished yet so I'm not sure where exactly they'll go. Stands…. sorted.

Woody2000 such as what? I haven't considered this because I thought (maybe mistakenly) that the sound would be a bit tinny.

Denon/Marantz/Cambridge good calls, I have a peep at the Richer Sounds site.

+1 for JT but call him first.

Jerry's wheels….. I wouldn't have anyone else build me a set. He is the best wheel builder I know.

Not that that has anything to do with facing a BB! 🙂

Strange… I followed the instructions exactly and after the first ride the chain was orange with rust. I have't used it since.

which all goes to prove that it is entirely subjective.

As with bikes, best thing is to try them and see which one you like best.

ooh… should I buy another and put forks and gears on it`? I can't do without a SS but the idea of a bouncy geared one really appeals. There again, I'm lusting after a Niner as well. Where's the money going to come from???????

    slowjo

I have an XL swift built up SS with reasonable kit, not super lightweight but not porky either. On a lift up test with my mates 26" Inbred SS (small) the Swift was noticeably lighter. OK he had bouncy forks but the difference was significant. Don't know what relevance that has to the OP but if you are careful it doesn't build up into a heavy bike.

As for ride quality, the swift is sweeeeeeet.

unicycles are great fun but it is years since I last rode one – even with limited success. The best I managed was about 100 yards. I fell off a lot! 🙂

Well…. I've got a pair of 29er wheels built on the superlegerra hubs and they haven't missed a beat. Build quality is fine, they go round and round and have stayed in shape quite nicely. No complaints.

Generally better on SL though occasionally Safari goes all strange but sorts itself out after a second or two.
