So what forks do you use clubber?

    Back again.

After discussion with father in law he wants to work around the following.

I am to buy him a laptop (yes, he'll pay me back!) and a large keyed keyboard plus cheap laser printer. He wants it set up so it will open up to the WP package of my choice (Wordpad I guess). He does not want internet access nor does he want any of the other programs that come with Windows.

The idea of setting myself up as Administrator and then setting up a different account would seem to work well.

The question then is this. Most new pcs will come with Win 7. I have a Win 7 laptop here and I have been trying to change it so upon booting up it automatically opens up to (in this case) open office. I can't seem to do it right, is there a quick and easy way to do this? (Once I have worked out how to do it I'll simply reset it to what it was before but I need to know what to do so I can replicate it on his new machine.)

Hmmm… my perceived disadvantages of using suspension forks.

It isn't something I can put my finger on. I love riding rigid bikes and I love riding full suss too but somehow I never really get on with a HT. Having said that, the HTs I have failed to get on with didn't work that well for me either as rigid setups. Maybe I need to think about it a little more before moving the forks from "wish list" to buy.

The Swift rides beautifully as it is and maybe I'm a bit worried the handling characteristics will change if I put sus forks on it.

Got in Tesco's for fiver too. Loved it, strangely enough so did my wife – she is usually a little cool towards sci fi. Non Hollywood background helped though.

Sequel…. yes, bring it on, as long as it doesn't deteriorate into a franchise like Aliens, Terminator, Predator etc

Yes I have got one and apart from me being an absolutely numpty fitting it first time round it has behaved perfectly. One word of warning though… the allen bolt on the device itself really is made of cheese. Don't think cheddar, think a ripe camembert. I replaced it almost immediately.

I wish I had been in the position to do what you propose Graham. Had the opportunity arisen we would have taken it. Parents need a break and as said previously, grandparents love looking after grandchildren. They probably wouldn't cope long term but a week is a good length of time for all concerned. Just make sure your nipper is ok being with them.

You may miss her but then again, at least you'll get a decent kip!

All good stuff everyone, the more info I have the better. I have a funny feeling though that what he is talking about is basically a typewriter with a small (2 line) screen though how he thinks it wil solve the problem I don't know.

Thick question here… can you print from an iPad?

DezB – can you let me have more info? I'll run this by him when we see him next week.

I like the look of the Simplicity kit. I'll add this to the list as well!

    Thanks guys.

    Awwww.. leave him/them alone!

Enjoy your new bike and then be amazed at how dead it feels/felt when you get your next new bike!

Not too sure that steel is any more "natural" than ally though.

A morning on a legitimate EU scam. The company had a warehouse in the UK and one on Frankfurt (or thereabouts). They had one warehouse full of sugar (in big sacks) and another empty one. They loaded half the sugar onto a fleet of lorries and drove it to the second warehouse. Having done that, they set up a shuttle where sacks were moved from Germany to the UK. Once in the UK we had to unload the lorries, stack them in a corner, then unstack them and take them out to another warehouse (a few yards away) and repeat the process. These sacks would later be collected by the driver who had just delivered them and take them back to Germany and repeat.

By the end of the morning my back was in so much pain and my arms so raw from shifting gritty/sugary sacks about that I told the foreman I had had enough and packed it in. The money was good – this must have been about 1981 and I got £60 for a mornings work.

I have an iPod Classic but the one I use for riding is a Sansa Fuze with an extra SD Card so it is a 12GB. Quite inexpensive, well built, works ok, battery life – easily long enough.

    XL Superlight. Very nice.

    I'm 6ft 4ins.

I may be looking at an Anthem 29er when they have been out a year or two.

So… more rest is the solution, then MTFU while it sorts itself out long term. Meanwhile, try not to fly off bike onto trail using elbow as point of impact!

Thanks, I had seen that already. It is not the treatment I'm concerned about but the time… time being of the essence as I am down to solo the D2D again and it is drawing ever closer.

This is going to age me.

Several years ago we were in a cafe on Sark and Cliff Richard sat down a few tables away. My sister rushed over to ask for his autograph and came back a minute or two later very disgruntled. He'd asked for 2/-6 to sign her menu – several weeks pocket money. (I guess he was sick of being pestered by people while on holiday).

I had a photo shoot with Linda Lusardi at a duathlon in the 1980s albeit she was fully clothed!

    That's about it.

    i run the 2.4s.

i love them in all conditions – they only come off when they start to clog rather than slide.
    +1

I generally ride them all year round if I can in both 26 and 29 inch flavours. I only change when it becomes horribly gloopy/sticky

Not sure about that. What is the past tense of to slink? Slunk sounds too American.

Fave album has to be III

Best track on there… tough one. Bron Y aur stomp probably… at the moment anyway.

My copy cost me £1.99 in 1972/3… still got it in vgc. The condition is a surprise seeing as how it has been played so often.

I'm not a techie or anything and a lot of what you lot are on about is a bit (a lot) over my head. All I know is, I replaced my PCs at work with Macs nearly 18 months ago and they have performed reliably (running XP on a virtual machine) with only one error in all that time (It was Windows related). When I had my PCs I was having to sort stuff out all the time and now I don't have to. To me, that makes them better but there again I could have had crappy pcs.

But then, what do I know I'm only the window cleaner!

Just started it. My sister had all 3, read them and said she needed the shelf room so didn't want to keep them. Not my normal genre but it is ok so far… I'm about 30 pages in so only walking up the front drive so to speak.

ignore it uplink…. that's what they did in Germany once upon a time and look what happened! (OK a bit of an extreme analogy).

Once upon a time people had a sense of civil duty where they basically looked after each other. Where has that gone now?

Given the location (the flatlands) I guess it would not appeal to "hard core" types but it would be a challenge, maybe one for roadies who want to try a long off road ride – maybe a 100 miler.

Yes they go bonkers…. hormones and all that. Imagine not being allowed to have any food in the house except potatoes for a month! If that isn't bonkers I don't know what is.

My nipper is 19 now and at university and we survived fine. Ignore the insults whether perceived or actual and get down and graft. You have done the easy bit, now you have to work like a team and it is hard. Then.. one day, little by little, shreds of your old life begin to re -emerge albeit subtly altered.

Oh yes, and have fun… kids can be great!

Just a thought tho'. If it is corrupt would simply restoring to an earlier state via Time Machine sort it out?

IME Skin so Soft works well for midges, mozzies and whatever those evil things are in Thetford Forest that leave series of golf ball size swellings (that weep) all over your legs, arms and any exposed area. So you smell like weird but if it works…..
