    sucking up fumes

I suppose it depends which roads you are riding on.

I have noticed lots of people on bikes recently. Probably definitely a TdF spin off but in my book, the more people on bikes = better.

A bike is a bike, road, CX or MTB they are all fun and have their own attractions.

    Swaziland for me!

82% of males in the UK (in my age range) are fatter than I am apparently.

My Hillman Superminx was scrapped when it had 180,000 on the clock. That’s 180k for the second engine, the first did about 100k.

it was good for more miles yet but I ‘rebuilt’ the engine BUT effectively stabbed it through the heart!

strange, like ourmaninthenorth, I dropped my bike on the ice while riding to work. Next thing I knew people had come out of their houses to see how I was, offer me lifts to home/work or wherever. Absolutely bowled over I was!

Anyway, good luck with the claim.

What with the latest arrest for doping (Cofidis – Remy de Gregario) this morning, the press will have a field day. If they can link anything to do with cycling to drugs they are like dogs with two tails.

In my first road race I kept up in the first dozen or so riders, held my line through corners, stuck to the rules, kept my nose clean and did really well.

Then the neutralised zone finished and I was shelled out the back in minutes. I rode my nuts off to get back on terms; when I rejoined the bunch, someone at the front picked up the pace and that was it, game over. I never know people could ride so quick! I had spent years time trialling and thought I knew a thing or two about making a road bike go fast but I was wrong.

Humbled, I had a lonely ride back to the HQ.

    Good luck for tonight btw!

Sunny Suffolk is wet, grey and not very sunny. Nothing too bad though. If it gets totally horrific with epic amounts of rain I should be ok as I live on what passes for a ‘hill’ in these parts. Plenty of room for my mates who live down by the river though, if they need to camp! 😉

She may good great naked but if she has got a few “issues” going on then run a mile.

How many of us here have worked that one out too late? Wasted ****’ years of my life on a weirded out bunny boiler, to no avail. Luckily I had the gumption to call it off two weeks before we were due to get spliced.

    Smoking (baccy) sucks.

Too much beer too often makes you an arse and somewhat larger than you give yourself credit for (in the belly department).

I should have given it at least five years before going to uni. I really didn’t get the most out of it when I went.

Shovelling barley and malt for a gap year*, isn’t as good as travelling the world. (* They weren’t called gap years then, it was called having a year off/ a year dossing about etc).

I should have gone to that Pink Floyd concert (The Wall) when offered a free ticket.

    Otherwise…. tons of stuff.

See what you have done? You got me looking at new bikes again. Bad person!

At £300 a pop it ain’t going to be a TdF machine but if it hangs together for a year and works for your commute then IMO it will be fine. There is no reason to suspect that it wouldn’t hold together for a lifetime.

I’d check whether you can fit mud guards cos a wet ar$e going into work will not be fun in the winter.

Having had commuting bikes nicked in the past, my criterion used to be… cheap and cheerful = good or, nice (but old) stuff covered in stickers and crud = good, as no self respecting thief would want it. I work from home now so it isn’t an issue.

A nice fixie would get you fit double quick (not one of these trendy messenger types), something like the Giant Bowery.

@Andrewj Was this on Strava or Garmin Connect?

I have run Bikebrain on my ‘phone and the 705 simultaneously (705 on the bars, ‘phone in my back pocket) and have come out with quite different results. The distance is there or thereabouts but it is the time, speed etc that are different!

I may be wrong here but I always thought the concentration on cities with manufacturing bases was intended to destroy the German war effort and simultaneously force the redeployment of men and materiel from the Eastern and Western Fronts. I believe for example, that vast numbers of fighters were withdrawn from both fronts to counter the bomber threat. This can only have helped the Allies in Normandy/France the low Countries and the Russians as they advance west.

By today’s standards, the manner of waging war seems crude and heavy handed but it was what it was.

paul_m IMO you are right. The IHT liability is only calculated on the net proceeds of your estate.

    slowjo
    Free Member

kcal, life policy proceeds will form part of an estate unless it is part of a trust. Sorry to be a pedant, but life assurance will always be for the benefit of someone else for the simple reason that you’ll be dead! 🙂

IHN re the mortgage issue. The life policy may be assigned to the lender or it can simply be set up to provide funds for the survivor to settle the loan.

We may have missed the point here anyway. Just re-read the OP. James, you can insure someone else’s life if you have an insurable interest in it i.e. if you will suffer a demonstrable financial loss on their death…business partner, co mortgagee etc. If you take out the policy on their life, the policy and proceeds belong to you and will not form part of their estate.

Writing the policy under trust (flexible trust probably) will ensure the money goes to the named beneficiary without need for a Grant of Probate. It will fall outside the estate for IHT purposes but there is no IHT Liability accruing on inter spousal transfer anyway.

Sorry, the point about it falling outside of Probate is important as it means the money will reach the beneficiary very much quicker than if you have to wait for Probate.

    Me – Bath

    Mother – Bath

    Father – Oxford

Before that, the only ‘foreign blood’ we have been able to trace within the last 100 years or so, was a young lady called Minnie Donovan who was from County Cork. She was a replacement for my great grandfather’s former wife (who died young) called….wait for it….Minnie Donovan (no relation). Could she have been chosen so he didn’t have to remember a new name? Good planning if yes!

Long before that, on my mother’s side some Huguenot’s make a brief appearance.

This information appears courtesy of two family genealogists but I have no idea how accurate the pre 20th Century stuff is.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I just tried BT again and told them I wasn’t going away until it was fixed. We now have a decent connection.

He fiddled about with the router remotely, I had to reset to default settings and then it seemed to work. 🙂

Re the scrotes having your details on file and waiting for insurance to replace stuff, then raiding you again.

The offices I rented were broken into some years ago now. Four businesses were raided, losing cash and portable office equipment. The landlords beefed up security, we replaced kit and went on with our work. A few weeks later they came back again, this time through my office. They removed a metal grille that had been built into the brickwork, got round our security locks and repeated their previous raping of the building.

Everything was repaired, we bought new stuff, the landlords beefed up security and we went on with our work.

I was on a night out in town and had left my car in the car park. Later on, I went to pick up the car (I was stone cold sober fortunately) and the Old Bill were in the car park. Two of them jumped out of some bushes and grabbed me! I proved I worked there (business cards etc) and they invited me to sit back and watch the show.

A few minutes later a screaming little chav came flying out of a window (ground floor) pursued by a couple of police dogs, right into the arms of the coppers. He was nicked. Later they searched his flat and found masses of stolen goods, along with dictaphones with individual tapes detailing which properties had been broken into, what had been taken, the fences he sold them to (with numbers and addresses) how much he had got for each item, gross ‘profit’ for each job etc etc.

He went away, but only for about 6 months but he never came back to our office.

I have had a lot of Karndean laid in my house. It was the cheaper option to Amtico but still came with a good, long, guarantee. We did a lot of research and ultimately decided that Karndean would do everything we wanted and if I happen to walk some mess in…. it won’t matter too much. Anyway, we are very pleased with it.

I understand it has to be laid properly, on some sort of latex screed, otherwise it won’t last as long, will be uneven etc.

The cheaper alternatives we looked at included ‘lino’ type products, and if you want to get something hard wearing enough, there is not much price differential.

Oh yes, there are different grades of Karndean, and they have different price tags so you might look at ‘lower grade’ ones if you want to save money.

As above, SS is irrelevant IME. It is running that brings the pain on.

I stopped running years ago now; if I ran I had to be prepared to be unable to walk without pain for about a week.

My physio never mentioned anything about a roller. Still, it is all cured now…. I gave up running.
