Embrace the wearing of hats! Funny how most people would happily wear a baseball cap but not something smarter!

No, but it stops you deforesting half the planet and saves you needing a wallful of shelves.

I’m guessing you saw the irony in my post anyway but speaking as someone who has a massive amount of books down the corridor in my house on shelves from a Victorian kitchen and works for a printers I still think a kindle/tablet with kindle app is the best thing going. Especially when reading lengthy books that are blinking heavy when reading in bed. I’m currently thinking of upgrading my original kindle keyboard as the new ones are so much easier to read when your other half is asleep. I’m actually tempted by the really expensive super duper one as I spend so much time reading one then why not.

You can read books on a smartphone. Battery life on my work Windows phone is about a week (which TBH is about the only good thing I can say about it).

Yes but If you read books on your smartphone then it doesn’t make you a superior being. Not having a smartphone will become more and more prevalent over the next few years as it replaces “I don’t have a Facebook account” as the new “I’m really into French Cinema”.

They can work well – just pay attention to where the camera is fitted as there’s nothing more annoying that finding it covered in road grime and mud when you need it. If you’re fitting it yourself then order a little bag of whatever trim clips hold in place the trim you are removing as you’re bound to break at least one if you’re not superhuman even if you have the right trim removing tools.

I’ve just written a sensible reply then decided if you had to ask youre probably not going to accept the answer.

You keep assuming that if you like. It was a genuine question. I have no intention of ever having one because I’m old and my insurance is practically free anyway – not to mention my 70bhp van struggles to accelerate anyway so would probably be fine even if I drove it like a complete idiot.

Do they take into account the kind of car you have? What is accelerating wildly in 1.0 fwd car might be only gently pulling away completely in control in a more powerful 4wd vehicle for instance.

Do you have a river or other suitable drain near? If so then install an overflow weir and dig a stream to suitable drain and the water level will look after itself.

00:30 and they turn them off in Newton Abbot. Mind you, I don’t even get a street light within half a mile of my house so it doesn’t bother me that much.

I haven’t done a proper setup yet – even out of the box (OK I set the air pressure) they just seemed to work and I wanted to go for a ride. No idea how much travel I’ve used TBH.

Did you set the pressure in yours with them upside down?

So, I ended up buying a set of Manitou Magnum Pro. Much stiffer than the 2mm increase over the Machete would imply, massively adjustable and a pretty much night and day difference in the damping. I’d recommend them to anyone looking for a 29 plus fork. The Machete is massively “spiky” blowing through its travel and then stalling where as the Magnum Pro is “floaty”.

I’ve recently started using a garmin (last 6-8 months).

If you like tracking rides to see if you are improving then they are more convenient than a phone app IMHO. Not to mention you keep your phone tucked away and hopefully more protected. I don’t turn on delivery of text messages etc to the garmin as I’d rather just ride and worry about the outside world later. Oh, and if you do get into trouble then you’re more likely to have a decent amount of phone battery to contact someone (assuming you have signal of course).

I’ve yet to break a mount despite a couple of crashes – I have broken a few “rubber bands” that hold the mounts on though. That seems to be a sensible weakest link to me.

I’ve got an 810 and when I’m in an area I don’t know following a route I don’t know I find a quick glance down at the garmin much easier than stopping to read a map/guide book/etc.

No idea on battery life – lasts for a long time but I’ve never really measured it and it’s a different device to the one you’re considering anyway.

At the moment – sod all – ever since Monday when one of the local farmers rather over zealously trimmed the hedges on the road down to the farm and chopped through the cables

I held up some admittedly powder coated red v12s near mine and instantly bought new pedals – shame the blue colour comes off the pins on vaults as they looked awesome when new.

30mph headwinds with gusts up to 45mph. A lot of Tarmac, some open moorland and a few steep bits through the woods. Oh, and some uphill cowpat drifting – apparently Chupacabrs aren’t designed for cowpats

Oh, and somehow my rear axle came loose on a fast open downhill – never had that happen before!

Whilst a “self healing” panel on the car seems like a good idea I dread to think how careless that will make some people in carparks.

North Bovey & lustleigh cleave in theory. That is if I can final get rid of the snot monster that’s taken up residence in my head.

If it’s the same snot monster I and everyone else locally seems to have then good luck. I’m just getting rid of mine 3 weeks on.

Despite being able to correctly set up a front mech I do prefer a 1×11 setup although I occasionally miss having a higher gear on road drags but I try to keep those to a minimum. KS Lev southpaw where the front shifter should be – excellent.

Having said that 1 got my first 1×11 setup on a new bike and made sure that there was an option to fit a front mech if I didn’t like it

I got out for a couple of hours on the SS on Woodbury Common with the hound yesterday (sorry if that was you that my little dog barked at on the north/south bridleway)

Wasn’t me your hound barked at but we were out at Woodbury in the afternoon :-)

Supprises you say NA is less isolated than Ok, looks about the same.

It’s at the junction of 2 main rail lines and has pretty good (for Devon) bus links and it’s on the A380 and A38 (near enough). Plus you don’t have to go on the A30 which gets very busy on changeover day in the summer.

And best of all it has one of only 4 remaining original cider houses ks the country. The local brew is £2.40 a pint there

    How dose Newton abert compare?

Train links from Newton are very good. Mainline to Torquay, Exeter, Plymouth, etc. The A380 isn’t bad getting to Exeter and back now they have co posted the Kingskerswell bypass as otherwise getting back into Newton in the evening was a nightmare in the summer.

Riding local you have Dartmoor, Haldon and Woodbury Common.

Various bits of Newton Abbot can be very different to others but none are really what you would call rough.

I’ve got a 2017 Stache 5 but I guess you mean the carbon one?

So, I rode my Stache 5 (3 days at Afan) and it’s a hoot but, if I was doing it again I’d buy a 7. The 5 comes with Alivio brakes with extremely bulky levers and the Deore 1×10 shifter has an indicator window meaning it is almost impossible to get the layout of the bars right for me. The stem is on the long side and looks cheap and nasty which doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. It also has non lockon grips that rotate on their own. As for the Manitou Machete Comp fork – it is incredibly flexy and seems to lack compression damping in any meaningful amount.

So, one KS Lev Integra (I got for a bargain), a set of lockon grips (I had hanging around), a 50mm stem (I had hanging around), a replacement cover plate for the shifter and some deore brakes later it’s getting there. But, it’s cost and extra few hundred quid.

I’m not sure what to do about the forks as yet – I might try some heavier oil before I ditch them for a pair of Pikes.

Reading between the lines I am guessing you want to put your alivo brakes on your CX bike and Avid brakes on your Stache?

Also reading between the lines I am guessing your alivo calipers are mechanical not hydraulic?

I’ve put some better hydraulics on the Stache – the Alivio calipers are hydraulic they just have rather cumbersome levers.

OK, that explains why I couldn’t find any. I’ll replace the BB5s when the drivetrain needs replacing and bin the Alivios – they are hardly worth eBaying but if someone local to Newton Abbot wants them then just shout.

A digital photo frame is well, erm digital. It makes no sense to me but people still like things printed out they can handle.

Snapfish and Trupint usually do good offers on photo books if you wait till November/December.

Yep, got a Camelbak Charge recently (like a Skyline but cheaper as it’s last years model )

Yes, I’ve got a camelback Skyline, much better weight distribution and far less prone to back ache on long rides with lots of water than previous packs I’ve had.

I’d have thought the torque caps would come with the hub as they are part of the hub and no hub specific like most hub “adapters”
