Hi NZCol, another scot stuck in paradise here, just thowing in my 2 cents, I moved here 11 years ago and love the country, ok i'm in auckland which is just like any other city but even here i think i'm better off than bakc in scotland. The wife and i flew back for xmas this year with the 18 month old slimtubling and within days it became apparent why nz will be a better environment fro her to grow up in. my brother in law mentioned that it was great when IT HAD NOT RAINED FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS and the lawn was dry enough for his kid to go out and play on. that really struck me how much i take this climate for granted now, My wee one is out in the garden every day, we got her outside 3 times in our month long stay in scotland.
If you're thinking of having kids their life will be infinately better here in nz. (imho)
my wife misses her family terribly and would return to sunny greenock tomorrow given the chance but she knows how much i love it here and at age 40 neither of us really relish the prospect of trying to rebuild the kind of social network we have here.
hope you find a solution to the issue until then, enjoy yourself here and just compare an average day in welly with for example glenrothes. no contest pal :-)
Ps my pb for the karapoti was 4.12 and as fat biffer i was pretty stoked with that!! christ knows how the whippets do it in under 3 hours.

We have just recently tranferred our considerable credit card (NZ$6000) debt to a low interest card as we were struggling to dent the sum borrowed, a week after we had done this the bank wiped the debt off our new card. we fessed up and got a very humble apology from our manager. (who is a top bloke for a banker)
they will laways find out sooner or later.

i once caught sight of Chris Waddle and Stan Colleymore in a services on the M4 or M40, Can't remeber which, however I was a scungy hairy cloggy type and cared little for their exploits, I did however meet the glance of another fella who mouthed the words "Chrissy Waddell?" in a questioning Channel 9 style. I lol'd.

Talking of Mantra's there's a fella must be in his mid forties lives in my suburb has an immaculate yellow and black mantra, stock as a rock except for a ludicrously steep shonky silver stem. He looks like he's never even thought of riding it off road, leaves it unlocked outside a cafe and bimbles along the pavement with shopping bags hanging off the handlebars.

Anything by Carl Hiassen, a very entertaining novelist who bases most of his tales in the florida everglades with an eco conscious bent, very funny with some great recurring characters. My pick ‘Skinny dip’.

I’m a sweet kinda person when you get to know me but my immediate thought upon reading the OP was “what are you hoping to acheive by bringing this up?” you are not going to alter the mindset of a coupla hundred bored bikegeeks by admonishing them for being mean. The current climate does not lend itself well to flowers and kittens type points of view, people are holding grimly onto jobs and houses by the skin of their teeth and some numpty posts a clearly poorly thought through statement(not meaning you here OP)- you’re gonna get the brunt of their collective frustrations. deal with it or at least don’t bleat on that you don’t like what you hear.
