Hora, ive lived around the Heathrow flightpath my whole life (we’re actually more like 12 miles south now thinking about it)and this is currently the farthest ive ever lived – im fairly confident that I can recognise the sound of a plane over this hum/whir.

As for underground/tubes/ no, we are more out in the green than you’d imagine for that.
Not going to speak to neighbours just yet until im convinced its not coming from our house, as mentioned above, we dont get on.
Im a total sceptic when it comes to bumps in the night & all that, but i did see some strange things when I was very young in a certain room of our family house, which freaked my parents out no end as someone had committed suicide in that room before we moved in..

Ive just stuck my head up our narrow chimney, and although partially blocked by a rusty flap, it does sound rather boomy up there. Cant quite pick up on the vibration yet though.
masculine washing machine on spin cycle, on a wooden floor, in a small room, is best description I can think of.

If you google ‘how to strip a border terrier’

I hope thats safe for work?..

DD – I realise you were kidding, I noticed the original typecast on the thread linked at the top.
I’ll do some research to see if blue & tans are less wiry than grizzles, thanks for the lead.

Yes – approx 3 miles from one

There’s quite a lot on the web about “The Hum”: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hum and it’s worth reading Wki on Very Low Frequency noise: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infrasound this will give you an understanding of how VLF noise can travel and the multiple possible sources.
I believe this could turn out to be one of the biggest environmental scandals of the decade; so far no government or body has been convinced enough of the problem to spend time and money researching it.

Genuinely, thank you for posting this, once ive exhuasted all other possibilities ill certainly dig deeper into your theory. Im certainly sensitive to a lot of noises, which frustrates me when the Mrs says she can hear it, but still falls asleep

De-strat pump on hot water cylinder? Or Heating pump circulating hot water during night? (if heating should be off, you could have faulty thermostat/controller)??
Get up the lIft and have a look???
Edit: do you have boosted cOld water? (pumped)?

I need to check the heating pumps but am a complete numpty when it comes to home heating systems.. Our cold isnt boosted though.

Can anyone explain why this happens at night though? – hang on… I just heard it now..

we had this – sounded like a washing machine on spin cycle. After a bit of investigation turned out to be the flue inside the chimney rattling in the wind. Especially audible in the winter for no good reason!

Drapoon, I may have to kiss you if this turns out to be the culprit as this crossed my mind only last night. We dont currently have a fire set into the fireplace, but I believe the chimney is still active (we havent lived here long), therefore, I presume im right in thinking a flue could still be up there..and rattling in the harsher winds?..
Was your sound really hard to source though? I can hear it right now and it could honestly be coming from anyhwere, any direction (although ‘up’ is my guess).

With the heavy winds and the positioning of surrounding houses, we are certainly geting some strange noises down the side of the house and across the roof. I wondered if it could be the wind blowing across the chimney, like when you blow across a glass bottle?.. Im just not convinced that you wouldnt be able to source it audibly if it were something so simple.

    some great photo’s above guys.

with regards to their coat, I first read this:

    ”Border Terrier Shedding
The Border Terrier sheds practically no hair at all. You’ll virtually never find a hair in your home!”

    Then this:

    ”Border Terrier Grooming
Pet coat (less work): Cut his coat short every few months and then it only needs to be brushed every so often.
Show coat (more work): Strip his coat every six months and brush it daily.”

Hence the enquiry in my original post. What does stripping entail?, and are the pictures of smoother looking BT’s examples of ones that have been stripped?
If im honest, id only be keen on the smoother coat as im not a fan of longer wiry haired dogs. But if stripping is an unpleasant experience id rather not put them through it.
Is the above comment of ‘they never shed hair’ complete nonsense then?.

Why BT? As mentioned above, im a fan of smaller short haired stocky terriers, and have had staffies in the family, whereas Mrs Slim isnt so keen on them, but her family has owned boxers in the past – of which im not so keen.
The BT is simply a dog we both came across and both agreed instantly was very cute, plus seems to meet our family criteria.
If that makes us a STW stereotype then so be it! (very weird thing to be accused of). I thought I was someone who liked to ride bikes..

its so hard to describe, but it just seems like an electrical sound..like a whirring. its certainly not a knocking.

back to the ear plugs for now. just find them uncomfortable unfortunately.

    A316, and yes. absolutely.

You’ll be more worried about the flightpath in that part of london.

all depends how close you want to be to venue. Popes grotto is likely to be closest, whereas there are probably 500 other options as close as syon park.

check my link above, its the shizzle.

Pope’s grotto (see below link) another good shout if not too pricey, very local to OP’s requirement.

im obviously missing something, why dont you need sealant with UST tyres? what stops punctures?

    slimjim78
    Free Member

No1 – only a track pump (a strap and washing up liquid) is needed to inflate : must be a UST thing
No2 – I don’t use sealant and have had only 1 puncture in 8 months – so you’d have had zero punctures if using sealant?
No3 – the less weight on each tyre the better – of course but you only appreciate that when actually riding and not researching – ? so you do notice the weight saving?
No4 – the downside is they are more expensive – & UST tyres are much heavier

Q – I can see why the idea of not using sealant appeals, but surely this means you are running a puncture time bomb?

topping up sealant is easier than replacing a tube

Kenda / schwable non tubeless ready are a pain to get to seal infact near impossable (for me)

could be my problem as ive had a nightmare getting racing ralphs to seat, however, one pair are 2.3″ so theres a high initial volume required.

Jim, unless you need a compressor for other things, the co2 cartridges are pretty good value on ebay…

are those cartridges any good for seating a tyre then? even the local petrol station pump couldnt get one of my tyres to seat despite copious fairy liquid solution and tyre slapping. I cant see how a cartridge would have enough blast for some tyres. May give one a go though.

You either need Co2 canisters, a compressor or Popeye to inflate the tyres fast enough to pop them on the rim. False, done mine with a mountain morph pump when on a ride

    You got lucky.

In my very limited experience, non-UST & some ‘tubeless ready’ tyres are a bitch to get to seat on initial fitting. I think the rim you are using and whether your tyre has already been used (pre-stretched) also has a bearing.
However, UST tyres are probably easier to inflate, and I reckon its worth the faff anyway as they handle so nice once up (and they stay up).

I use a diablo on a fox flux and have to mount it slightly to either side, but after a ride or two you dont notice it, plus it looks fly.

    yes, i said ‘fly’.

i love the idea of a ‘trifled’ soul.

to be fair, the recent maiden ride on my soul was the best ive ever had on a new bike. they certainly do feel eager and turn in fantastically, my cornering improved instantly.

im torn on this one, i recently switched to tubeless on a combination of UST rim (rear) and rim strip (front), and have had real trouble getting tyres to inflate without the use of a local garage’s compressor(!)
Ive also been covered in sealant twice on the trail when hurriedly having to sort a split tyre (by inserting a tube, ironic indeed).

However, Its only a small difference, but I swear the bike has better ‘feel’ when running tubeless. Im certain the grip is better too, certainly when hooking into loose terrain uphill.

Ive also literally heard about half a dozen punctures self heal whilst riding, and that puts a big smile on your face.

Plus, reducing rotation weight of your wheels is where youll most notice a weight saving.

So for me, tubeless just about swings it.
Going to have to splash out on a compressor though, but ive been looking for an excuse to buy one for ages. Not being able to easily change tyres on a whim is a bummer though, but its not like I did that very often.
