Cheap Things Tuesday: cranks, brakes, bars and more

my first first half marathon several years ago, I trained hard and lost a load of weight to become fit enough but was never going to set the world alight with my time – I just wanted to get across the line. Set myself a time to beat none the less of 2h:15mins. Figured it a good place to start my HM career but didn’t want to go any slower than that, and told my supporters accordingly.
Timing chip in shoe, set way back in field so didn’t cross start/finish line for several minutes after timing clocks started. Knew my pace was close but sprinted last section when I realised time was slipping away.. Crossed the line and went to check my printed time in the organisers hut, 2:15.00.00 exactly.
To the bloody thousandth of a second. I checked all the other times, no one else had a round number so I couldn’t account for it being a repeated glitch. Was just a one off.
Got a spooky one too… OooOOoOOhhhh…. When I was a wee lad of about 5, I used to climb into my folks bed in the middle of the night when for whatever reason I couldn’t sleep.
I would tell them every following morning that I saw the strange ghost man again at the end of the bed, and he was waving at me. Apparently I would recount this in detail nearly every time I stayed in their room.
They told me years later that it freaked them the hell out because we had only moved into this place following the suicide of a man in that same room.slimjim78Free MemberHelps build up the rim bed if the tyres are a bit slack.
Again, how does building a rim bed up help a slack tyre?
When we refer to rim bed, are we talking about side wall thickness?
slimjim78Free Memberjust wondering, whats the idea behind 2-3 layers of electrical tape ‘to build up the rim’ comments all about?
I’ve always used 1 or 2 layers and just carefully sliced the excess off with a scalpel – running it along the inner tyre bead groove.
Works a charm, every time
slimjim78Free Memberalmost split down the middle then, with a slight leaning towards hatred.
Ok. That’s pretty much in line with what I suspected. Thanks STW, you’re all treasures to me x
slimjim78Free MemberFFS.. it was a rhetorical question, i’ve already apologised for the term. Get over it, thanks.
THREAD TITLE ASIDE, is he revered, or reviled? It would appear most have not forgotten nor forgiven.
Have those posting against him actually read his statement? Genuine question.
*disclaimer* I am not defending him – just gauging opinion.Philip Schofield is not a national treasure. Actually, yeah, its a horrid statement isn’t it. David Jason included.
slimjim78Free MemberAn expensive lawyer kept him out if jail.
So OJ Simpson in your eyes?
slimjim78Free Membercare to elaborate?
interested to know if you just dont like his music, or dont like him as a person for reasons stated.
slimjim78Free MemberOther performers that have committed unpleasant crimes, and been convicted – and subsequently released. Assimilated or shunned?
Largely shunned – there arent many public figures I can think of that come back from a stretch at her majesties pleasure and enjoy the same cult/popular status they did prior to being banged up.
Depends on the crime I suppose.I guess the wider question – to which you allude – is as to whether someones sins/crimes can be offset by the work they do in artistic sense.
Partly, yes. But more to the point – has the general public accepted his reasons for his internet faux pas and kept his record unblemished – or is he forever tarnished?
slimjim78Free MemberHe visited a normal pron site according to Wikipedia.
Smoke without fire and all that – I suppose what im getting at is, has he been by and large exonerated of any creepy charges by the general public – or do ‘we’ still put him in the flawed list?
Just a genuine question as im interested what the public consensus is.
slimjim78Free MemberThe whole concept of ‘heroes’ or ‘national treasures’ is just fundamentally stupid
I genuinely understand what you mean grum – but sometimes a category just helps the conversation to flow.
I personally have few living people that I admire to the point of personal cultural heroes – of those I do, several would be from the music industry just because it’s a very important genre to me.So if I were to impart a sense of British pride into my ‘hero’ listing – Pete would be one person that i’d like to advocate.. hence my dilemma.
If it sounds less trite, lets call it a ‘person I hugely admire and makes me proud to be British’ list.slimjim78Free MemberI love to read of people not letting the man get them down.
Power to you my good fellows.
slimjim78Free MemberYes, I’ve been hitting the gumtree and P4H ads – there are a few good candidates. We have also just singed up on a dog sitting site as we can happily take a dog on during the school holidays.
slimjim78Free MemberI run a SS SS rear hub which so far engages well and hasn’t killed me to death.
slimjim78Free Memberyeah, those Charlie deals look spiffing. Not sure if theyre on the CTW scheme though?
Possibly, just havent looked.slimjim78Free MemberGood advice again. Yes, I should imagine most rehoming centers would likely say ‘thanks but no thanks’ with regards to our working hours. I suppose I was thinking that if we decided to go ahead that there may be one particular rehoming center that are more flexible.
In hindsight that may well prove more difficult than first thought.Gumtree/Pets4Homes would be a good shout though, i’ve seen numerous ads in the past where ‘private’ owners are desperate to rehome.
Oh, and yes, we have a nice house with plenty of room and a large garden overlooking national park land. Would be a great place for a dog to settle in.
slimjim78Free MemberWhy not a terrier?
Not 100% sure now you mention it. Perhaps the high energy levels?, also having owned terriers in the past im used to the high prey drive – which based on the fact I now live on the South Downs with miles of open fields, i’m not convinced I have the energy myself to chase a terrier that has run across Farmer Giles’ fields after a rabbit (etc)!
Retired greyhounds have been considered for sure. Again, slightly concerned about the hyper-sensitive prey drive and common requirement for a muzzle.
Neither are deal breakers though, we’d re-home any dog that really needed a chance.slimjim78Free MemberThanks for the tips so far.
We have considered the breed fairly carefully, im drawn towards terriers normally which probably isn’t ideal. I doubt we’d go for a springer or collie working type as they would be more likely to climb the walls when left alone.
In fact, we’d probably be happy to take an old lap dog. There are numerous local rehoming centers so plenty of choice, the trickiest part is bound to be convincing them that we are good prospective owners as im sure they will ask all sorts of questions related to our daily whereabouts.dog daycare near you?
Yes, it seems there are a couple of options locally – although realistically, it would test our budget somewhat at circa £300pcm
slimjim78Free MemberConsider how many dogs are actually left at home for 6 hrs a day. I’d suggest it’s lots.
I agree – however, not sure that just becuase its a fact, justifies it.
I tend to err on the side of ‘it must be better than a kennel’, but as yet, im not convinced. When I think of the literally millions of dogs that are abused/eaten/abandoned/generally uncared for around the world – I start to think that my situation would be favourable.
slimjim78Free MemberWould rehoming two dogs (so they can keep each other company), be a possibility?’
Yes, we would consider it. However, when considered previously we found that studied anxiety levels dont appear to particularly fall with either 1 or 2 dogs.
Binners – Alas, Mrs Slim is super allergic to cats.
slimjim78Free MemberFair play. Whatever you think of Superstar, its great to see the product being produced in house.
Interesting to hear that quality is supposedly better than Taiwan produced kit. Be nice to see that statement qualified on the trail.
slimjim78Free MemberSeems a perrenial question – for good reason.
I’ve spent way too long deciding similar positions myself. The answer is: There is no right or wrong answer.
You like/love cycling, there are lots of different types of bikes out there, you have a natural urge to try something else.
The real question(s) normally are:
Can you comfortably afford to change?
If not, are you prepared to be skint in order to acheive new bikedom?
Unless you can live with the ‘what if?’ scenario then you probably just need to stop beating yourself up and bite the bullet.
Ahhhh. That’s quite cathartic.
slimjim78Free MemberI would think that a 15 stone person bouncing up and down on a Reverb in all manner of directions as they hurtle down a hill
You sit, downhill?
slimjim78Free MemberFirst two albums still stand up there. Truly timeless brilliance
See, I really like Ten. But I would never say it’s timeless. It sounds like an early 90’s album to me – with hints of the 80’s thrown in. And some of their lyrics are, well, a bit cringeworthy.
Nirvana were over hyped pish.
Over hyped no doubt, pish – nah. Cobain was a staggeringly good front man. And Grohl hammered out some mean rhythm. Heart Shaped Box IMO is genius.
Mike Pattinson
dude, it’s Patton.
Faith No More aren’t grunge in the slightest, but they are an incredibly influential and wonderful act. Regarding Patton side projects, Tomahawk kick ass.

On which note, where do The Melvins sit in this discussion?
slimjim78Free MemberIt’s been a while, I remember expecting to win a slam every time! Well done England
slimjim78Free MemberOk, will do.
However, I would respectfully counter that both points you have paraphrased are ones I have heard argued on radio/tv/pub on a fairly regular basis.
slimjim78Free MemberNever buy a Renault Megane if you are not a fan of long winded bulb changes.
I think part of the problem actually comes from legislation, in as much as they have to design cars to be so pedestrian friendly these days that it leaves virtually no space for squeezing in the formerly easy bits
slimjim78Free MemberJust when I was beginning to lose faith… this gem of a thread appears.
I really like the Smart Roadster. They remind me of the feet of a Transformer. 2 parked side by side would blow my mind
slimjim78Free MemberAppears to me that your a typical voter who has a (strong) allegiance to a political party without thinking critically what’s going on.
As it happens, I didn’t vote blue at the last election, so erm, nope.
I’m not defending out of allegiance, I’m offering a different perspective because it seems to me that most are predispositioned to disagree and spout hate no matter the outcome they are actually facing.
Targets are just targets, and I think some leeway is fine on this occasion as the inherited situation was simply so dire.
I cannot buy into the argument of spending the country out of trouble – it’s an absurd principal. As is growing the state in the name of providing ‘tax paying jobs’.Out of interest, has anyone on any of these threads ever read the opinions offered, considered them, and changed their mind as a result?
slimjim78Free MemberSo Gideon fails
Subjective. He didn’t hit his quoted targets, but I’m pretty sure the economic shower of shit he inherited was even worse than first predicted. Britains economy has been fairing favourably in comparison to the majority of the rest of the world, so subjectively, you could argue that Gideon has done well all things considered.
IMO it’s too easy to just spout ‘he missed his target he missed his target!’On balance, I think the cuts to disability have been too deep and too fast. We should indeed be taking better care of the vulnerable. Including *sigh* binners
