I’ve spent far too long trying to work out the intricacies of fat bike chainline/hub spacing/q factor.
In summary, its a bloody mine field and I almost wish I never bought the bloody thing as upgrading the cranks for optimum chainline presents a clusterf@€k of options.

Northwind – I’m settling on the Aeffect crank arms as amongst other reasons it appears they are compatible with my Hope BB – can I ask what paid for yours and with which chainring/arm length/axle length?
You mentioned pages ago about not being convinced about your chainline – i’ve devoured plenty of charts and reading and I ‘think’ the best option for a 190 spaced hub is to go for the shorter RF fat axle (167mm) and flip the direct mount chainring.
This gives a chainline of 72.5-74.5, close to ideal optimum, and a Q factor of 205mm.
    With the 190mm axle you’re running a chainline of 77.5-79.5mm and Q-factor of 228mm.

If you purchased the longer axle, then you could probably source the shorter version if you can be arsed?
This is theoretical at the moment as I am yet to measure my current Q-Factor and check the arm clearance on the chainstay. There’s a possibility (I suppose) the the 205mm may not provide enough clearance.

Lastly, Woofstooth components make offset cinch chainrings (inc. oval) which im sure would offer you the chance to tweak your chainline further. I have several charts saved if you need them.

I have a brand new and boxed set of the same bars for £40 posted. Fitted but never ridden.

Great photo – scenery looks stunning.
Tempted to try a 4.5 or 4.8 up front myself.

I took my longest local decent at a STRAVA PB of 35mph last night – you know that point where you’re having a great time at what seems like warp speed and then the little voice in your head goes ”if one of these components undeneath you happens to fail now, you’ll be a in a real bad way” ?
Whatever, will be going back to beat the time tonight!

Also fitted a KS Lev with lever operated action – looks nice and neat in place but so bloody fiddly reaching the lever on the move, especially when trying to stand and lift. Have promptly ordered some bits from the remote lever kit from ze germans and will be using a Spesh SRL lever I have laying around.

Guys, I need to commit to a chainset – Ideally want to run the Superstar 30t ring, and retain the Hope BB cups I have spare so a GXP crank in 104BCD would be ideal.
What are my options? I can’t seem to get my head around the chainline/spacers/BCD/axle width/dropout width conundrum.

Fergie loved winning the FACUP, he showed the same respect towards it as the other big hitters.

I’m fairly gobsmacked at the timing of the announcement, can only assume LVG was fully briefed well prior to today and knew he was walking out with held held (kind of) high.

Ive spent a while thinking about this appointment. Have concluded that I’m not personally a fan, don’t think he will last more than 2 seasons, and will dissmiss the young players – however – United HAD to sign him. It was their only possible ‘power play’ left in the managerial circus. There is no one left to bring on board that has the media or transfer window clout – and he happens to be currently out of work.
They would have known full well that he would be tied into a huge contract elsewhere by the start of next season, and they would’ve been left with another ‘meh’ season under LVG and then be in the market for a super manager.. With none readily available

The more I think about it the more I think Hiddlestone is perfect. Excellent actor, has the charm and accent, just about low key enough to make the yanks go ‘who’s this Limey? He’s neat!’ And I’m sure he can pull off the special forces trained thing pretty well – in fact it’s probably more interesting when someone who isn’t obviously hard core trained pulls kick ass moves off – pre Bourne, who’d have been confined by Matt Damon for such a role?..

Bruce Lee, widely regarded as one of the most kick ass guys ever. Was a midget.
Doesn’t come down to physical size for me.

Elba has a certain charm, granted, but completely relies on it. Is shite at the acting bit.

I too bumped into Grayson Perry a couple of weeks ago in a Costa queue in Angel. He had his lid on so assume he was cycling to his studio.

Craig Charles is DJing a funk n soul night at my local village festival this weekend, so hoping to get him to tell me to smeg off

You have a Reverb that has been faultless, and you want to buy a Thompson because you don’t know if it is reliable, and it’s the same money as the new Reverb – which is too expensive?

    Is confused.

the El Guapo hubs are pretty good by all accounts. Probably worthy of a rim upgrade in the future.

How do the Emmental/El Guapo wheels weigh up?
Annoyingly unavailable in a Dune friendly pair – but if they were any lighter/better than stock wheels they would probably be worth a bash at £169 a set.

Might pick up a chain in thier sale though – which is best for 1×10 Zee/Sunrace set up?
Have heard KMC work nicely – any model to pick in particular?

I grew up on Grifters/Mustangs/choppers/skyway mags/activators/bmx bandits/the one that made all sorts of noises from a speaker box.. Etc

Each one promised a brand new way to be cooler/faster/more wickeder than your mates.

I’m not sure there are any equivalents to the above ‘new and exciting’ concept type bikes. It’s just BSOs in halfrauds.

Haha, yes, it was me and they’ve assured me it will arrive with 3 doors this time.
I am currently in a courtesty car until new order arrives – its a VW Up!, and my patience is already wearing thin with it.

Figures are back from dealer, its going to cost me £36.41 PCM more over 42 months to go DSG. That kind of stings a bit as it really stretches my budget – but I suppose if I actually ride my bikes more over the next 3 years instead of buying shiny new bits for them then I could manage it. Just.

Final payment has come down by £100 too. I thought a DSG equipped car would be worth more than £100 extra after 3.5 years but there you go.

    slimjim78

Hmm, that’s pretty unanimous then. I’ve asked dealer to quote me for price to switch over – I reckon I’ll be going for it. I do like a nice auto box so DSG should be a step above that in use

    Thanks

The GX versions use similar arms to the X5/X9 but use a 94mm BCD which ties you into SRAM chainrings.

Damn, I stupidly assumed 104 BCD – I already have a SuperStar 3-T NW in transit. Suppose i could send it back and use the Sram ring.

do I have any other/better options to run with my Hope BB?

I’ve a group ride organised with colleagues on the 27th and am secretly training for that – if it goes well then i’ll be in a better place to join you lot going forward.

At the moment I am winching myself up the Downs – it’s probably as painful to watch as it is for me to climb.

Oh yeah, need some crank advice – I have a spare standard Hope 68/73 bottom bracket with GXP adapter fitted so ideally would like to use it – I’m looking at the SRAM GX1000 which looks good value at around £75, guessing that the BB would be fine to use without the standard width plastic tube spacer thingy?
ie, just run the BB at 100mm.

Bit worried about chainline with a SRAM crank, anyone know the centreline of them?
Also, the GX 1000 has an 11sp ring – are they ok to run with 10sp chain?

I have a 1997 kawasaki ZX6R – it does 20 miles each year to the MOT shop.
I also have a 2012 Triumph Bonnevile SE – it does 100 miles a year.

Curious, what are you looking for, for the Triumph?

I’m curious about the zx6r.. Do tell

Oh, and someone else mentioned Muddy Fox courier.. Interested also!

I find the front slightly lower than I’m used to, but it feels kinda good. Switching over to an 80mm stem with +6 degree rise later in the week – coupled with my 780mm bar I think it going to feel sweet.

Been plagued with a bit of chain suck this week and have lost a fair amount of paint as a result a looking forward to my 1×10 gear arriving

Genuine question (I promise), but what are you lot doing on a daily basis that warrants the use of said tools?

I’d like to own something similar as I appreciate the gizmo/machinery, I’d probably put in in my bike pack for longer days out – but other than prising a stone out of my shoe, i’m struggling to think of what use it would be.

I’m loving the look of some of the kit on that there link /\ , but I don’t know my choil from my jimping – whats the ‘essential’ kit?

First proper ride on the R0s, took me several decents to get anything other than a horrid squeal out of them – then one loooong draggy descent got them really hot and suddenly they came to life. Bloody awesome. I’ve never felt that much control on a brake before – pure modulation to the point where you actually want to lock up – and then you can lock up at will.
Super nice feel on these suckers, and stopped my fat ass with confidence, here’s to many happy descents!

Picked up my MX3 for 59.99 from CTBM. Rather see my money stay in Swanage TBH, but thanks for the link 🙂

Lazy Q, my current lowest gear is 22/34 – how similar/different will my new 30/42 be?
12t diff on both set ups.. But could really do with an easier winch gear

It’s true though JY, many drivers have been bobbers over the years. Some brought humour or drama into the mix though. Hammo just brings ‘bling’, and that ‘accent’. Sorest loser I ever did see too. But, that’s what makes him ‘great’ though eh?
