I can tell you that Asian people have fewer, smaller sweat glands than Caucasians (us and Indians)

Interesting. My nose suggests that they are just as pungent.

    Coolio. Thanks all.

I think i’ve cracked the ERD/Mavic issue, i’ve seen various threads confirming the stated Mavic figures are short – so either 603 or 604mm should do me well.

I’ll double check my flange measurements tonight and order up some spokes from Rose or CRC (£21.98 for 36 DT Comp spokes plus brass nipples at CRC).
I’m going to Heath Robinson a ‘truing stand’ from an inverted fork and some card markers.

Whats the worst that could happen?..

im struggling with the Wheelpro calc as I dont know my flange from my elbow.

Google is offering TN719 ERD at both 598mm and 604mm. What gives?

According to Superstar I have the following:
    PDC Left 58mm
    PCD Right 45mm
    Flange Left 21mm
    Flange Right 38mm

    Then for the TN719:
ERD 598/604 ? <- im guessing that the 604 is the Mavic ‘spoke support length’ (to tip of nipple) plus 6mm for spoke length hidden in nipple?

I would suggest DT Revolution spokes

It say the following about DT Revs on the Rose webiste: ‘DT Revolution spokes cannot be used with DT Pro lock nipples!’

So this means the spokes are bonded to the nipple? Not head of this before. Is this something that is usually ignored?

Not being funny but that was 2mins on Google?

    Cheers mate – 2 mins saved 😉

But seriously, thanks for the image. I’ve never built a wheel so wanted to ask the hive in case there is anything obvious I miss out before I commit the spondoolies.

Old Switch, Switch Ultra or Switch Lite?

    Erm, new? This fella:
    http://www.superstarcomponents.com/en/switch-ultra-front-hub.htm
    So Switch Ultra.

especially if you round up the spoke length calculation.

How much does one round up by?

I too prefer to grip something of real girth.

I find one of the Superstar lock-on range pretty good in that respect – I forget the model but its pretty clearly stated.

So far I can only comment on the Juggernauts, but I have Floaters and a Fat b Nimble to try out. The Kenda’s seem to roll fairly well off road, plus they are so much lighter than the others. I’m also running them at around 9psi, may try dropping the front pressure next ride out. That being said, on hardpacked flat bridleways I do notice drag but have just assumed this is a fat phenomenon. Will be interesting to see how a heavier Floater, for example, holds up on the same flat sections.

I’ve been revelling in off camber ‘rut’ grip recently, and rolling up curbs at bad angles is also being taken in their stride.

I haven’t been out on anything other than perfectly dry trails yet but I’d be surprised if they hold up too well with such a shallow tread profile.

Not looking forward to the mud though, I’ll be adding a kilo of tyre weight when I swap over.

    You’re right.
And bizzarly The Reassmebler was more cutting edge and creative than this entire episode of TG.

The longer it became apparent that this was just a rehash of the old format, the more it felt like it needed a third presenter.

The U.K. V USA thing was completely irrelevant – which to be fair, nearly all the old TG content was irrelevant – but somehow they just got this one completely wrong.

Agreed, Evans was ittitaring throughout. He needs his love of cars to come through rather than just ‘zany ideas’.

The whole show has been crying out for reinvention for years, all they’ve done so far is the worst of the old bits.
Still, fingers crossed for improvement over the coming episodes. LeBlanc shows promise as he warms to it.

    I like him, why not?

Because if you look close enough, you an actually make out the wet behind his ears.

Even Mrs Slim finds him irritatingly soppy, and I can count on one hand the amount of people I’ve heard her criticise.
BBC played a super top trump card in combining his powers with that Welsh sap on the one show (shudders). I can barely type ‘one show’ without shuddering. (Shudders). Eugh.

Not sure you can go wrong with any of the suggestions tbh, but fruitbat has a point over the recommended forks lengths. I rode a Soul 26er with 120mm for years and climbed everything, I never felt over biked with it.
That maybe because I’m a bit shit though.

I think Linn tt’s look great in an old school way, but the cons seem to outweigh the pros in terms of ownership – they sound too sensitive to set up conditions for the amout of time I’d personally be willing to invest.

I own an RP6 with Exact 2 cartridge and it blows me away. In fact, I played an old Jap copy of Abbey Road on it as an experiment last week as it was a known copy that seems to have been pressed badly – with hiss running through it and a heavily compressed sound. Having heard the same copy on 2 other fairly decent set ups I expected to hear the same flaws – lo and behold it sounds perfect on my RP6. God knows how, it just does.

For that reason, and for simplicity of set up, if I’m ever in the market again with a budget like yours I’d be looking straight at the RP10.

Standard ultimately mean nothing, it’s all about being fit for purpose and fitting you properly. People are still trading and riding bikes/parts from the 1930’s(!), for example, and there’s absolute bundles of 26er parts available – it’ll take donkeys years for you to struggle to find parts.

If you can genuinely live with not having the latest trend then as you already note, you could pick up a real high end bike for not much monies.

How much are the pre-production frames costing russy?

    How heavy are yours, Slimjim78?

Just weighed them, 1360 and 1340. I’ve been spoilt by my Juggernauts I think.

EDIT* just got the link above working on my iPad..450 notes for the frame eh? Ouch. Looks like I’ll be enjoying the Dune for at least another season then.

The Pace frames are supposed to ride ace, but, rack mounts?..
The Soul looks great on paper and has many happy customers. I’ve ridden Soul 26ers and loved em too.
The P7 looks like the one is splash my cash on currently though.
Or leftfield choice, NS Eccentric Cro-mo – I’m riding one currently and the geometry is spot on for me.

    Fahzunnd! Good work fatists.

Do I understand that its possible to fit a RF 100mm 170 spec crank and flip the ring on the outside of the spider?

I think NW (and I) are referring to direct mount chain rings, whereas it sounds as though you are referring to a spider/104bcd set up. So, possibly not. However, if you have an RF crank that has a removeable spider with Cinch interface, then you may be in luck.

    smokestone ‘the henderson’

Been waiting a while for these to show up, there’s limited info available – in fact, next to none on the slam69 website. What standards is it running? You mention your fatty trail parts fitting so assume it’s not a 177/197 straight through axle ?

I bought a manual. 6sp over Fiestas 5. Not sure auto is an option, seeing as there are no options as such.

    Swift has cruise control also.
And keyless entry/start. And climate. And Nav. And xenon headlights. It’s a well specced car for the money,

    Nice! Liking it?

I may have used a little poetic licence, granted. I actually put a deposit down on a new one, should be getting it in the next 2 weeks – they are lending me a courtesy car in the meantime as part of the deal. Oh, bagged some free floor mats too 🙂

    Fiesta purely on size

Have you sat in/driven both? The Swift is larger. Mindmap3 hit the nail on the head re ergonomics I reckon. The upright windscreen on the swift is great for visibility, and I much prefer the dash layout.

I went as far as ordering a Polo BGT… It turned up as a 5 door, I ordered 3.

Popped by my local Suzuki dealer this evening, they had a couple of Swifts in the showroom and I was really taken by the grey colour.
    So I bought it.

    slimjim78

I have 2 Suzi dealers within 10 miles of me. Parts though, likely to be pricked on a Japonaise I imagine?

Hopefully wouldn’t need many within first 3 years though.

I’ve driven both, they are both excellent handlers. To be fair I had a better opportunity to rag the Swift, which i promptly did – and boy is it good on the twisties and at roundabouts.
Disappointingly gutless at low speeds though, although that is coming from years of 2.0l turbo diesels with bags of torque.

The fiesta, saw it today in the showroom and it certainly looks the part in deep metallic blue. Just can’t get on with the interior – it’s all over the place and despite its futuristic aspirations, somehow still seems remarkably ‘Ford’.

So I’m completely torn betweenn the two. Am trying to justify it on running costs now, with the Swift possibly losing out on odd size tyres (which I’d be burning through every 6-8 months I imagine) and the aforementioned higher tax bracket.
It’s also quite thirsty too allegedly.
But then, the Fiesta gets nowhere near the states economy either, apparently, and is £1300 more expensive to purchase.
    Swings n roundabouts.

I reckon it’s mostly a thing for the anally retentive to worry about

I’ll be losing sleep tonight over this matter!

Am wondering myself about going for 170mm’s, owing to my stubby legs.
