As you mention, I’ve known of bikes that would literally break if ridden due to a design fault or degrading material of some description, but instead of being scrapped they are kept for prosperity in order to preserve an example of how designers were pushing the envelope back then.

It’s easy to take for granted the advanced bikes we have on offer today, R&D was a different level back then

I only ask as I’ve read that centralised holes such as that have been Believed to contribute to stress rise cracks in some cases. Something to do with the direction of stresses on the seat tube. Hence why most stealth holes these are positioned to one side these days.

As I said above though, it’s a nicely executed feature.

Absolutely yes. I can only attribute it to a ‘can’t beat them so will join them’ phenomenon. When I started driving around the A406 into NE London a couple of years ago I was staggered at the sheer amount of criminal driving.
I doubt the police would catch even half of the perpetrators if they could even be bothered to try.
