It’s a steel frame. Get a frame builder to modify it how you want.

Absolutely – I would happily do this to a used frame that needed refreshing. Not on a box fresh £1500 frame though.

Don’t forget that the top tube bosses are also for a water bottle cage.

Are they? They don’t look like they are spaced for a bottle cage (plus there are 3 visible tabs) but if that is the case then fair enough.

As much as I often have a dig at PX, I would say the Fatty Trail is the best buy, if you are happy to fork out £900. The Bluto fork is worth ~£400 alone and I don’t recall any owners in this thread having issues.

I would certainly agree – at a £900 price point it is a best buy, but as the Dune can be bought discounted down to sub £500 the lines are blurred somewhat.

The Dune definitely has the weight advantage out of the store, has more modern spec hubs and a easier upgrade options to Bluto etc., but IIRC there have been hub/BB issues for some plus it does not come with hydraulic brakes. Now the tyres are Juggernaut Pros, it makes the bike lighter still, but I’m getting the vibe that are less versatile than JJs and fatbike tyres aren’t usually cheap.

Again, I agree on the Dune having ‘better’ specced hubs/clearences – I remember reading of one freewheel issue that was sorted under warranty, and a BB issue that was probably due to user error.
However, the 2×8 groupset is really cheap (= nasty). It’s functional, and some are choosing to stick with it, but I switched everything out to a full 1×10 set up after dropping the chain for no good reason and removing a fair amount of paint on the chainstay in the process.
Disadvantage is that I spent another £250 to go full 1×10 (including fancy new chainset), Advantage is that the bike now feels brilliant underfoot. Effortless gear change, no chain hop, sure footed. Also dropped about a pound in weight!

The Juggernaut tyres are super lightweight for a fat tyre and during this mostly dry season (South Downs) i’ve found them perfect on chalky/hardpack/flinty trails. My mind may change when we get to the muddy season – but to this end i’ve picked up a discounted set of Floaters for £20ea. So no biggy there.

I did swap out the bar for a spare wide carbon that I had, but the only other change (other than lightweight inner tubes) that id definitely recommend is the brakes. I hated the nasty cable pull ones and switched to a bargain set of Formulas picked up in the On-One sales (£100).

So all in, i’ve spent best part of £850 on it and it’s right where I want it to be in terms of sheer fun and performance.
Would I buy a Fatty Trail with Bluto for £900 if I have the chance to do it all again?
    Thats the real question.
Personally, I didn’t have a lump of £900 to lay down at the time (plus they cost £1100 when I was in the market for Fat), and psychologically it was much easier to convince myself to part with £500 for ‘a whole new bike’. Also, the Dune is now riding superbly and I am really digging the rigid front end set-up having ridden front suspension for years. Having a fully rigid fat bike gives me a whole new flavour of riding.
I’d say, if you have any spares that you can swap out for a Dune ‘re-build’ then its still very good value – but if like me you are a bit of a perfectionist and cannot resist upgrading, then the Bluto Fatty is hard to look over.
A deciding factor for me is that im not a fan of the rear end spacing on the Fatty (or lack of bolt through axle), nor do I think it looks as fab as the Dune. The nuclear yellow (literally glow in the dark) paint work is awesome in the flesh. And the frames lines all look smart to me.
I kind of have a weird sense of pride that I enjoy riding this ‘budget’ bike more than pretty much all my other bikes.

Anyway when can I order my Dune, and will if fall to bits??!!

Erm, you can order ‘now’ ?
It won’t fall to bits, but you’ll be limited on outright pace by the stock brakes. Also, make sure to double check the axle bolts are tightened sufficiently. Square taper axles are probably my biggest hate in cycling – should be banished to Room 101.

Have to agree with matther01 – the tabs on underside of TT are completely redundant for me, either go with internal routing or external only. I wish Cotic would actually create some clean lines instead of just saying so.

Admittedly these things annoy me more than most.

Fiercely loyal things that would bite if you looked at them the wrong way.

I have to say – that bit doesn’t really describe my JR. He loves all people, especially kids.

Just hates rats. Or so it would seem.

You could barely see the rat & dog changing direction

This bit though – when he picks up a sent it reminds me of watching MethPacMan change direction – its all instant right angles, I can hardly take it in!

shame he appears to be no longer supporting his legacy product – burning bridges by not even responding to customers that are now out of pocket.

Don’t care how good the light spread is on a LL, it would have to be a Maxx-D for me now.

Ha, for sure the Flare is now top of my list but in true STW style I already have a problem – Flare 275 or Flare Max.

Heart says Flare Max but the frame colours arent doing it for me. Me wants Orange or something else thats bright*.

This seems a good easy project – just needs some polishing for a sound bike. Low mileage, seems about £800 cheaper than the competition… Should I snap it up?

It’s no barn stormer but I could get some good use out of it and move it on next year for a profit if it’s too dull?…

My first bike was a Bandit 650. Have also owned a 1200. Very ‘nice’ – just don’t make my heart flutter when I look at them.
Have also owned a mint 600 Fazer (she was goooolden). Again, nice reliable comfy ride – but slightly dull.
Just to be clear, this purchase is equally as much about posing as it is riding. I’m going full on open face helmet, goggles, tan leather jacket, brown steel toe caps – tattoos and beard, etc.
I’m going to look pretty fly for a white guy.

I’m decided, it’s got to be an 80’s mid weight looker, or possibly a 90’s throwback (Zephyr etc).

I promise not to buy a superdream . Scouts honour

Had a 45650b, they are noticeably heavier than an 853 frame – but – when on the move they feel bombproof. Amazing tracking as the front end is super stiff. Beats the wrists up a bit as a result, but worth it for the steering.

Great value frame, almost throwaway pricing. Would be nice to have a bolt-thru rear end though.

    the obvious weight issue

That the hardtail will be much lighter than your FS?

A quality steel frame, say, 853 – will surprise you by how light it actually feels. I used to ride a nicely built Soul and several non-enlightened riding buddies couldn’t believe how light it was even stationary. On the trail I could flick it all over the place and the front wheel popped up with virtually zero effort.
Invest in a nice steel frame and forget about the ‘weight issue’. There isn’t an issue.

I’m a lardy – but have always had huge legs and ‘reasonable’ aerobic fitness. On a flat course i’ve frequently smashed riding partners, and have always put it down to power:weight ratio.

Hills have always been a different story. I used to despise them, but a few years ago I made a conscious effort and managed to lose around 30kg – suddenly I was climbing everything and loving it. I would frequesntly lead MTB rides with friends on a SS and still kick their butts.

Now i’ve put most of that weight back on im really feeling it on the climbs.
Strava regularly has me in lower 15-25% on climbs, and upper 5%-10% on decents. The extra weight is unstoppable downhill – it can be a pretty hair raising experience!

So in summary – if you want to beat your tubby mate – take him out into the hills.

im also seriously considering a punt on this one:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/311647557979

clocks and rear fender missing, but readily available – plus engine/wheels/frame look super clean. Looks to me like a nearly completed project. Is supposed to fire up nicely and runs well.

I’d prefer a bit more patina ideally, but at least the tank is in good as new condition.

Plus, despite its small scale – im drawn to this wee beauty: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201606185035835

    Nice Goldwing /\

Some great suggestions so far, thanks guys. just researching the model numbers suggested is good fun. Pretty sure I’m still settled on a mid sized cruiser style 80s machine. Ideally a twin or something that sounds good.

Quite like the idea of bratting an XJ650. Also liking the look of the Guzzi’s and BMW R80

My favourite example of a custom so far, XJ650 bobber, welded rear end (hardtail), stock wheels, tank, fork (chopped 3″). Alledgedly bought and built for $600 all in!

    Anyone with Moto Guzzi experience?

Some of their 80s models look great. Seems to be a few 500-750cc twins around, starting at about £1500 for anything half decent

You’re spot on, that’s a fab looking bike! Get some pics of yours up eh?

I could quite happily own that linked bike, perfect stripped down utilitarian machine. At the prices available they also seem worthy of experimentation, probably best way to do a bare bones cafe racer.

    What’s the difference between 250 and 251s?

Chewy only available on ‘short’ version.

I have the ‘hard’ 777mm version. They are pretty darn stiff. Love the width.

Has anyone tried a different fork on their Dune yet?

Be that carbon, or Bluto or anything else? I’m still enjoying being back on a rigid bike but wondering if any harshness could be removed with a decent carbon fork.
I nearly bid on a good as new chinese set on eBay a couple weeks ago but the lister mentioned that they were very light and possibly not best used in anger(!). I think they were around 650g mark.

Since being recommended i’ve been drawn to these strange agricultural MZ’s…

Who has any experience of them? I’m sure they are super vibey, noisy and supremely unrefined – but a bit of cold war era Eastern bloc machinery appeals on a ‘so bad its good’ level!

Is there much to choose between the 250 and 300cc models? First glance shows that some come fitted with oil mix feed into the cylinder (or carb?) – is this only on a partiuclar model?

I’m sure it’d be crap for touring but would be fine for pinging into town on. And seemingly cheap as cabbage soup.

Hmm, that does look an interesting option. I imagine it would rattle ones fillings clean out, but it certainly has a charm
