agreed – the formula just hasn’t worked.
For me, the damage was irreversible when all of Fergie’s backroom staff left along with the chairman. It may as well have been a new football club at that point – and with Moyes at the helm.. sigh.
Somewhat ironically however, Moyes’ results appear to be among the best of the PFF’s (post-fergie-flops). FA Cup vistory aside (for which i’ll always have a little place in my heart for LVG).
The winning mentality and sheer demanded proffesionalism has been eroded and in its place is a ‘mock-big-club-we-are-winners’ facade. And this is no surprise to me when essentially none of the heart of the club staff remains.
Since Mourinho’s first day at United, he’s had a strange humbled, yet ‘can you smell shit?’ look of puzzlement on his face. I think he’s probably been told that in no uncertain terms will he drag the United ‘proffessionlism and tradition’ through the dirt with his outbursts – and in an attempt to still appear at the top table of football he has signed on the dotted line to their demands.
Problem is, his ego/personality already looks like its losing the dressing room. Would it really be a surprise is Rooney jogs off in January, United are out of all Cup competition and still chasing 6th place?
Nope.
There’s no guarantee that any player you buy will fit right in and do the job required – but why keep buying players and leave them on the bench? At least have the courage of your convictions.
United look terrifed every time they attack in the final third – they appear to me to be so terrified of losing possession that they crumble and stagger. There’s no movement, no creativity, no flair. Its much like watching England!
And there lies the rub, much like England, I think the fear of failure has gripped the club, gripped the players and is stiffling confidence.
Moments of brilliance from Rashford/Ibra/PP are not going to turn this team around.
And the answer? Good God I wouldnt like to be the one that tasked with finding that out. A sea change is the best I can come up with. Sign a man manager who is known for instilling belief, sign hungry young players, with humble attitudes that are desperate to prove themselves and would be genuinely proud to pull the shirt on and leave them to it.
The sight of half the squad laughing and joking, and swapping shirts with Chelski after thier humilation on Sunday made me feel certain that the hunger is not evident in this squad. Giggs hit the nail right on the head there.
