… I’d go for a full susser … from the ones you’ve mentioned above I’d choose either the Trance or the Stumpjumper.

The reason being … 15 years off and ‘not as young as you used to be’ hardtails can be painful on longer trips… I’m over 50 and find a good full susser better for me than a hardtail … and with the right frame and components can be built up pretty light to help with the climbing … as does the traction (sometimes).

Don’t go for too much travel … 120 either end is fine for most UK riding, trail centres etc … especially if your not planning to be airborn for too long.

ps … I have a hardtail 29er too … but if I had to keep one, it would be my full suss’

yep … been there myself. You know you shouldn’t keep doing it but something says … ‘just do it once more, get it just right then go home happy’ …. never works out like that though!!

glad you’re OK and hopefully back to riding.

    Thanks all

wasn’t sure about the ‘no cycling’ bit but am now.
Met two sets of walkers yesterday with two different responses. ‘are you the only one’ and ‘hope you’ve got good gears’
Thanks for the pics spacemonkey …. lets me see what it could be like here with some sunshine. Sitting here at the moment, looking out of the cottage window at grey mist interspersed with hissing down rain.

I knew I should have gone to Finale Ligure!

I’ve met him when I went for my day with Tony … really nice lad, unassuming and I would guess, as you mentioned … very very competent on the bike.

I think as a young apprentice to Jedi he has learned from one of the best but it ‘could’ have a negative effect on his confidence to compare him and Tony as he’s only just started out.

I know the forums all about freedom of opinions etc and people are paying for coaching courses and want the best … but what about asking ‘what did he do really well?’ …. that way you get the best bits and can probably tell from that what to expect without bringing out comments that might destroy his confidence.

ps … got me a 2nd beer when I was there so pretty cool in my book!

@fandango … sorry for the delay … went out today and it was so muddy you couldn’t actually see the protector!

probably still leaves the ends of the bb shell vulnerable but its all I had at the time.
Thing is the frame IMO is a work of art so I didn’t want anything that spoiled it too much.
I should get one of those fancy carbon ones but I can’t find one that the right shape.

Mr Tall’s dad’s bike is a bargain …. I’d get that one if its the right size

I’d look for a Giant Trance, Trek or Stmpjumper … good frames with loads of spares knocking about and, as chackaping said, very upgradeable.

    sleigh62

I know how you feel … but I don’t know why I’m paranoid about its vulnerability … its a rocky msl by the way … I decided to bodge myself a downtube/bb shell protector out of an old rear mudguard (attached to the underside bottle cage bolts.
The thing is for every horror story on here about damaged or cracked carbon theres just as may stories about aluminium … I suppose you make your choice and live with it … and insure it too.

so far so good (probably break it tomorrow now!)

brake fluid and a bleed kit

we were lucky with the ppds last year and got the very hot saturday … boiled my brakes though which made the lever pull back to the bars with no effect … made some of the downhills very interesting!!

but to be honest ruined the ride really … not the sort of thing you want to be worried about.

    did you replace anything else?

bb with extra spacer by any chance?

only similar experience I’ve had is the cable slipping through the clamp due to stripped threads or its not seated correctly in the shifter so doesn’t pull through properly.

    Hotel Igloo

we used this last year for PDS

not quite as cheap as above but triple room was plenty big enough for all 3 of us …. great facilities and close to main lift & town centre.

hosts were great, very relaxed and let us use their spa facilities for showering etc on our last day after checkout

I ran pro2’s with 719 rims and have recently changed to pro2’s with crest rims … setting them up tubeless was far easier with the crest rims (yellow tape and superstar valves). They went up first time with a track pump … even without the sealant in at first then I just added the sealant through the valves.
The 719’s seemed to take may attempts and eventually I needed a compressor.

what about cutting a piece of innertube, removing the saddle, slipping it over the post and zip tying both ends … the lower one just below the collar?

    sleigh62

Just to add … my 09 didn’t have the newer thicker rear tiangle, still no problem.

I did switch between sizes though.

I’m about 5’9″ so started with a medium … I later switched to a Yeti small which is a 17.5″ frame and not a stretched as the medium … so depending on how you like your bikes just be aware that a Yeti medium is around 19″.

great bike though whichever you choose … the only reason I changed it was due to not really needing nearly 6″ of travel for the riding I regularly do.

pic of the bike is the ‘small’ frame

    i’ve had two … pre 08 and an 09.
great bikes. lots of horror stories about the carbon rear triangle but no problems at all with mine .. Alps trip as well.

    That looks really good.

I’d be interested to hear how it rides and if you had any problems with tyre rub.

The Rocky review was talking about shimming the shcok to reduce travel or buying the shock linkage from the RSL which has less than 120 but I didn’t really want to go through stuff like that.

    sleigh62

read a bit further on about the Rocky and some people have ridden one with 650b wheels … apparently makes a ‘great bike even better’ but you have to reduce the travel otherwise the rear could rub on the seat tube at full compression.

At the risk of prolonging ‘watsontony’s’ pain … :D

it could make a lot of difference and negate the need for a completely new bike if you just want to experiment with bigger wheels!

    thanks so far

could be just paranoid … when I bought them they were as new, perfectly true … came back from cwmcarn and the rear has a slight wobble out of true but I didn’t do anything silly or remember hitting anything particularly hard … just made me think that I’m putting it under too much pressure?
