Lol, well i'm looking to buy some this year, so hoping someone can alay my fears of snapped bars!

What is a decent weight for bars? I.e. not uber lightweight carbon efforts?

Evening all, been looking at CRC again and they have some Azonic Double Wall risers in a massive width (so will probably need cutting down) and one inch rise in white.

Are Azonic bars much cop these days? I remember a good few years ago they were pretty well rated, are they any good these days?

I'm really liking my Specialized Eskar tyres at the minute. Seems to be good grip and can be run at fairly low pressures.

Do you work for Schueco then?

13thfloor – you'll be surprised. Myself and a friend were very unfit, with another fit friend and he managed to drag us along the WHW. We did it in 2 days, and carried all the water/food we needed etc. Was a huge pain, but nice to finish at the end of the second day. I did however have a few tantrums and 2 hrs sleep between the 2 days.

Toras are heavyish but surprisingly good forks. I had 318 air forks for quite a while and they were well damped and pretty stiff. Add to the fact that they worked flawlessly with zero maintenance (only died when I tried to maintain them and ruined the seals to the damper side of things).

Same forks as Recons, only with steel stantions rather than ano ali ones.

    Rip,

Thanks for the offer, but i'm really after blue and have a CRC voucher.

I'll have another look at the Magura kit and see if it mentions hose diameter.

    I'd ride it!

Good luck getting any kind of response from Specialized! Been waiting 2 weeks so far after 3 emails, and still no response.

Doors need safety glass in, so laminated or toughened. Best comprimise for security is a leaf of each in the door.

Secure by design isn't a 'standard' as such, but a Police force initiative. Doors are tested (to PAS24) and either pass and are classed as secure by design, or they fail.

Individual parts of the door e.g. the lock can be part of the tested door, but cannot be 'secure by design' on their own, so adding a lock that's been in a test and passed, doesn't make the door secure by design.

    Sorry, boring ain't it!

For aluminium Schuco are very good (but very expensive, and generally commercial).

You might also want to consider sliding folding doors as you can basically open up the end of the house.

Make sure in addition to being anti bump, the lock is anti snap.

You'll have no problems with Leica kit. They make some superb survey kit, and from the brief experience i've had with their disto d3, it seems to be no different.

Agree that Hilti stuff is nice, but pretty expensive.

Fowey has a fair few pubs but not a whole heap else to do. Nice scenery, and a trip to Polruan is on the cards too, but again, not a lot to do. Sams is nice for an even meal, but a little cramped if it's busy.

If your kids are young, there's Ben's Play World in Par (near St Austell/Fowey). You can enjoy a stroll around the picturesque Par market* while the kids play.

*Disclaimer – Par market is not picturesque

If you get a few spare minutes away from the kids (try suggesting the other half goes shopping in Truro), try Skinners brewery in Truro. The tour is rather good and involves free beer (well, beer included in the price). It's a short walk down the road past Sainsburys (just off Lemon Quay). Betty Stoggs is a very nice pint.

Doom Bar (Sharps) is a good pint too.

For a nice long beach that is a lot quieter, you could try Gwithian. Dunes, long beach and you can see St Ives across the bay.

Carbis bay beach next to St Ives is stunning, but busy.

If you want nice beaches, then i'd stick to the north coast (not saying there's not any nice ones on the South).

Not done this myself, but was once told that heating up some grease in an old saucepan till it liquifies and then dropping the freehub into it, so that the liquid grease fills the free hub. Once cool, it should solidify and you'll have a freshly greased hub. Note that heating grease isn't the best idea, but if done very carefully in a well vented space, should be ok.

Adam at TartyBikes is pretty good at CK servicing as he's been doing it a wee while.

If you're staying near St Austell you could ride out to the Luxulyan valley, and ride up through there. When you pop out the top you're near to the Eden project, and can grap a few road miles over towards Bodmin for a ride round Cardinham. Nothing amazing, but better than just spinning around the roads (which will be busy in the summer)

Steve, would the same apply to a Seat Leon 2ltr TDi FR as it sounds exactly like what used to happen to my father's company car. Seat had it back so many times and had no clue what was wrong with it (computer says no problems), that he rejected it under safety terms as dropping in to limp mode while overtaking was scary!

If you want to see a truely scary crane crash watch this and turn up the volume.

The sound of the main slew pin snapping does not bode well!

We have moved from Eclipse internet to O2 (mainly due to cost and the good review O2 get, not that Eclipse was bad) and the internet seems to drop out a hell of a lot at home. Constantly having to go into the wireless settings on the computer and reconnecting to the network (happening on both computers that worked fine on Eclipse).

Tempted to try the old router to see if that will make any difference, so if you have an old router kicking around, i'd try that and see what (if any) difference it makes.

Toras are really not a bad fork. Identical model for model with the Recon forks except for steel steerer and stantions.

But, chromed steel is smoother than any anodised aluminium and it doesn't wear out. However, Toras are heavy.

Just ordered a HTC Hero on an Orange contract, 1200mins, unlimited texts and unlimited internet (well 500mb per month fair usage).

£35 per month, first 6 months half price (by sending in receipts) and if you have Quidco, £50 cashback. 18month contract.

There's a bit in Harlestone Firs on the north side (up near Duston) and a little bit out near Delapre golf course.

There's Tredz which is the local club. Ride Sunday morning and Wednesday evenings (I can never get up in time on a Sunday morning) who always do a good route and seem to have scouts out all week finding new bits of singletrack.

521's on Bulbs are not what I would call a chunky wheelset. About 200g for the rear wheel heavier than a Hope Pro 2 on Mavic 719. Bit stronger I would reckon.

I've got a Bulb on D321 rear wheel. Don't worry about the weight (not that it's that heavy) but then don't worry about my rear wheel full stop as it's stronger than pretty much anything out there.

If you want light brakes that work, then Magura Marta would be hard to beat.

Older Hope hubs seem to be far better built than the new ones. Always hear of bearings dying and cassettes cutting into the freehub. Sell them to me cheap if you want rid of them!

Depends how often you use it. I wouldn't buy Dewalt myself as they don't seem that nice quality wise

Milwaukee or Hilti are both expensive but if you're using it a lot then you'll see where the extra money has gone. That said, Makita are nice. Metabo also do some very nice kit, but again, expensive.

    Bang on budget

More expensive, but no hammer setting, but a li-ion battery

    Jim,

I'll have a look when I get home if you want. Bought a new bike last week and swapped a load of bits from the old one over and am needing to sell what I took off.

Definately Octalink and 73 wide, but i'll have to check axle length if you're interested. Only ever ridden round the carpark when trying the bike for size.

    Email in profile if interested.

What about a Saab. Admittedly the newer ones are based on Vauxhall, but if you get a petrol then the engine is Saab (which is a very good thing).

Serviced, they will go on to the end of time. A lot of people who look after their Saabs get 200k plus miles out of them. I bought a 90k car for £1300. Air con, 10disc changer and a 2ltr turbo. Imaculate condition. Returned about 30mpg, had grin inducing acceleration once the turbo was on boost. Made for safe and fun overtaking.

Apart from me giving it oil and air filter changes in the 30k miles I had it for, I did nothing else to it and it passed it's MOT's fine.

Near enough anything will return 30mpg plus if you do a lot of motorway miles and don't have a heavy foot.

If you are anywhere in the Midlands, I can highly recommend a trip to Nene Overland near Peterborough. Guy knows his onions, has approx 50 landies at any given time (including modified types) and is the only UK independant who can supply direct from the factory.

Used to have a 90 with the Puma engine. Was surprisingly quick (not car quick, but not slow either) and you haven't experienced torque until you drive a landie up some very steep Cornish hills (normally a 3-4th gear hill to keep speed constant) in 6th without dropping speed.

Excellent offroad, but you will be wondering how they can sell one for so much money. Build is 'agricultural' to say the least. Doors don't shut or seal that well, dash is fairly tacky, paint is appaling, and not much room up front (being a 90 the bulkhead stopped the seats going back very far so knees around ears when driving, but might be ok in a 110).

However, when the snow came last year, it was brilliant. I was one of those smug people in the 4×4 towing people out. Didn't put a foot wrong, and despite near sheet ice, dragged a large saloon car out of a ditch with nothing more than idle revs (low range is cool). In fact my girlfriend took it to work and enjoyed dragging a fully laden transit van out of a ditch when the 10 guys standing there pushing and telling her they didn't need help gave up.

So to summarise……if you're going to go offroad, get one. If you're going to use it as a second car, get one. If it's going to be your only mode of transport, i'd have a very serious think about it, as they aren't the most comfortable for driving.

Freewheel on the cranks so you can change gear without pedalling (at least on the 26" variety).

Not sure why on a mod (20"), although no reason not to other than that everyone 'usually' puts the freewheel on the rear

You could try contacting Specialized. They might well be able to help. Not sure what the warranty length is on the X-Fusion kit, but on my new Pitch, i've got 2 years on the forks and I thought he said 1 on the shock, but looking at X-Fusion website, it seems like it might be 2 years for EU countries (although that might not cover OEM kit)
