The same answer as all the “is my RP23 ****” threads, try searching (or at least looking at the other one on the front page!)

    So either

    1: You can’t drive
    2: You’re lying
3: You *wish* you could have a BMW and feel emasculated by those who do, so you spend time making things up on forums because it bolsters your fragile self-esteem.

I’ve had a number of BMWs over the years, some have been amazing, some more run of the mill. One thing they all did was drive well, even the midrange diesels.

    Errrr, yeah ok.

    1) I’m a petrol head. I used to race rally cross and have been on so many track days I’ve lost count.

    2) I don’t need to lie.

    3) The ones I have driven have been on test drives when looking to buy a new car, I could buy a BMW today if I wanted too.

In seriousness though, I’m not surprised. People will often say they prefer the way their heavier bike rides, or how they rode 2 bikes back to back and didn’t notice the heavier one being any slower. But put a clock on it, and you’ll almost certainly be slower on the heavier one. Probably not 10%, that’s a little extreme, but World Cup XC racers don’t race around on 28lb steel hardtails with a 140mm fork, 750mm wide bars and 2.35″ Maxxis tyres because of the slight advantage they give on the downs. Much more time is gained in the up and along, so they ride stupidly light (like 18lb light) carbon bikes with wheels and tyres that are pretty much throwaway if anything goes wrong with them.

Am I reading this right? An intelligent person on STW.

    Surely not!

Leave the gears alone! He needs to be spinning up the hills not mashing the pedals and ****ing up his knees.

Whats the fascination on here with 1x whatever?

I’ve always wanted to like BMW’s but every time I’ve driven one I’ve been soooooooo unimpressed.

So yeah I think I agree with you OP, over rated IMO.

Tapered head tube would be nice, not many (if any) longish travel hardtails offer that at the moment, and 953 tubing.

STW logic – it will make no difference, buy the heaviest things possible.

Real world logic – it does make a difference, think power to weight ratio, also better handling.

The only way to go quicker is to lose weight, be it bike or you (if you lose weight its free!!!), or increase fitness. If going fast doesn’t matter to you, then don’t worry about it.

Why is it you do the whole “I’m like this in real life” thing, but are perfectly polite to me in real life?

    Classic keyboard warriorism innit.

You scrub your tyres clean ?
Yet have the nerve to scoff at people turning their bikes upside down…………I’d p1ss myself laughing if I saw you scrubbing your tyres clean…….

I do too, but my bike lives in my bedroom so it has to be clean.

Why wouldn’t you turn it upside down more like?!

Well I dunno – is it really innovation? Or just wasting effort? An 80mpg family car would be a far greater innovation than a 250mph supercar imo. As evidenced by the fact that no-one’s done it even though far more money could be made.

In terms of top speed of a road going vehicle, for sure, and possibly manufacturing quality, but I wouldn’t bank on that if volumes were taken into consideration. As far as innovation- I can’t see too much- refinement of existing componentry, maybe, but innovation? I doubt it. Then again, I’m no engineer.

    Are you two serious?

Honda corporation has a far more spectacular and innovative history than VW-Audi though, imo.

    BS.

The Bugatti Veyron alone eclipses anything Honda have ever produced car wise.

Fiat was the first manufacturer to develop VVT.

The OP asked a simple Q – his brakes are fine – should he spend money?

    No.

    skywalker

We have 2 reviews; STW and MBUK. Both reckon the XTs are the better brake.

Thats strange, the STW review was posted on the previous page, the way I read it the Hopes won.

The key to good braking is to always have your finger slightly on the brake, this keeps them nice and warm and improves performance massively. You’ll never have any cold weather braking issues if you use this correct technique.

    LOL!!

Im with Baarp, the XT’s I’ve used have been awful. Loads of power yeah, but the feel is terrible, they’re grabby, they’re not as easy to get parts for, they don’t look as good and every ***** has them because they are cheap.

I can guarantee in a couple of years of riding something will go wrong with the Shimanos as well.

Someone I ride with bought some XT’s and on every single ride so far he has had to piss about with them because they haven’t been working properly. When they do work they are on and off like a switch, my X2’s not only have as much power, they feel 10 times better. He even said he wished he bought X2’s.

Seems everywhere you look the new shimano brakes are getting good reviews

But Hope are winning the tests. Even that isn’t enough for some, Hope must be paying them off 🙄
