Brilliant to see trails going in there. Went there with the family 2 years ago and walked a fair bit out of Aberfoyle. Thought to myself “this would make a great trail”
Top job fellas. Got to get back up there soon for some hoonin roond the fairie moond.

On the contrary, I don’t hate other people’s bikes. They pay my wages. And it beats the hell out of working for a living. Been there, done that, 70 hour weeks managing bars and putting up with drunken assholes used to piss me off far more than playing around with bikes all day.
The only thing that does frustrate me a bit is when there are compatability issues with older bikes the customer would like to keep as true to original as possible. Ringing a customer to tell them they need to “upgrade” to a new version because the old one is discontinued, and then they need a whole load of new bits to make it work, kinda feels like killing off a classic bike.

Have a look at Sanderson or Flow bikes. Tony from Indepentdent had a one off 14″ Sanderson Life frame made for Kate (Betts, lodge cycles) and she loves it so much that she sold her FS bike.
The Blitz frame may well be available in 15″ and it’s real slack with a Pike fitted. Nice steep seat angle too. Makes for a good pedally descender.

Si is a top man indeed. He’s got one of our Lodge Cycles team DH riders on a Dueller and has tuned it to perfection. Then when we got Nukeproof Scalp frames in, he re tuned the shock to suit the leverage ratio of the new frame and got it running super sweet. He’s also getting Ifan a new 2012 version and dialling it for him for next season.
Can’t praise the guy highly enough.
Hope you had a good Holiday Si. You’re gonna be busy for a while I think.

A thought just occurred to me aswell. Some mineral systems are not so tolerant of high performance fluids such as LHM. If your brake has been bled with LHM in the past, it could have hardened the seals and causedthe leaks.
Just a thought, but may have some relevance.

it’s the customer service when things do go wrong that makes the difference for me.
Hope and Shimano offer the best aftermarket service IME.
The dry boiling point of DOT fluids is higher, but the wet boiling point of mineral fluid is closer to the dry boiling point. So you see fewer complaints of brake fade on mineral systems.

They leak no more than any other brake for a given number of units.
All mass produced products will have some problems on a percentage of the run.

Semi is a 44mm cup that presses into the frame, Integrated is a frame that is designed with bearing seats in the headtube.

Hope headsets are very good quality.
I’ve run them for over 10years with no problems. Even my old sets are still going strong on the Kids’ bikes.

Fantastic bike. I swapped my Orange 5 AM for one (sold and bought)
It’s lighter, pedals better and is stiffer.
When I throw it into a corner it comes out bang on the right line I want.
The Orange can kinda skip a bit if it’s rough and loose. I used to like that about the Orange, but it’s slower.
When the Mega gets loose, you’re on it big time cause it just eats bumps.

Trace every time. VPP beats DW on trail bikes.
DW is about anti squat, and VPP is about pedal efficiency.
2 very different principles that work better for different styles of riding or riders IMO.
I’ve ridden them both, and VPP wins out for me on trails.

Self indulgent bullshit for sale. Only £9 a copy.
Would you buy it from me?

    No, didn’t think so.

WE have an extensive cycle path network that run alongside many of the roads that serious incidents have taken place on. They were built for cyclists, they go in the same direction, and compared to riding on the road, they are safe.
    Why are they not used?

These paths are designed to minimise the conflict between motorists and cyclists, and millions of tax payers money is put into these facilities for cyclists every year.
Why are they not used by cyclists for training?
Why risk your life on a training ride?
Especially when there are drivers out there that’ll leave you for dead if you do have a collision.
When i commute I use the pavement. It’s illegal, but it’s safer for me.
It means i get to see my children when I get home from work.

And I don’t care what you say. I’m doing what i need to do to survive out there on my bike.

Nice one Matt. Come and see us at Lodge Cycles soon. I’ve not seen you since I left Skyline and MTB-Wales has sadly gone.
It’ll be good to catch up and chat. We got some good coffee down here.

This guy can ride anything from XC to Marathon, to DH and all in between.
I have so much respect for his ability in all disciplines.
We’ve had our disagreements online in the past, but once we met and spoke face to face, we became friends.
And I wish Matt all the success he so rightly deserves.

A clamp marked as 30.0mm will most likely be a 29.8mm rounded up.
Salsa make some of the best clamps on the market, they round up the size in this manner.

It’ll have a 68mm BB shell which means your SLX chainset will need 2 spacers on the drive, and 1 on the non drive side.

And they use a topswing front mech to clear the bottle cage mounts on the seattube. The multifit mounts have 28.6, 31.8 and shimless run 34.9mm. So the 28.6 is the closest fit that’ll work. IME you may need to use only 1 shim on the mech for a perfect fit.

They don’t make SLX in IT 70 Italian thread, that’s a road standard!
But I agree that they should screw in by hand for a few turns until they hit the threadlock.

I run a 2002 Marzocchi Z1 on my HT. I build my own wheels and they are stiff enough with a QR axle not to rub the crown in turns.
in fact, most decent wheels are.
QR forks are fine. marketing bullshit is not.

That’s a bit of a shock to me, to be honest. Michael Bonney always said they’d never need to conform to the euro size standard.
The times they are a changing.
There was a call for it from customers for years, so it’s good to see it.

Well, there’s now a new headset standard to comtemplate.
Virtual headsets give you all the sizing headaches without actually being a physical entity.
So you get all the fun of trying to work out which one will theoretically fit your headset / headtube standard without the financial stress of having to buy one.
The perfect tool to beat the current economic climate.

If you would like more information on virtual headsets, you won’t find any, anywhere.
But you can waste hours trying to find some here http://www.virtualheadsets.com
So whether you have 1″ threaded or a head, 1 1/8″ threaded or ahead, 1.5″, 44mm, Integrated, semi integrated or internal.
You won’t find any of the info you’re looking for here, or anywhere else for that matter.
But we wish you good luck if you decide to further your search.
    The virtual headset society.

Better optics would take that brighter hotspot and distribute it over a wider parabola. So optics are the key to a better light.
That’s where the extra cost goes to some degree.
The rest of the cost goes into better ballast and heatsinks for heat management and durability.

If you’re thiniking about the Zesty, the Spicy climbs just as well and gives you 20mm more travel to boot.
I rode on the MBR test in 2008 which put the Zesty against the 5 and a few other bikes.
The Zesty felt more like my Coiler than a trail bike on th climbs and descents, although it was a bit quicker overall.
I changed mt Coler for a 5 after that test, and haven’t regretted it at all.

Much as I hate to disappoint you JP, Orange don’t make a 17″ 5.
They go from 16 to 18 to 20″ frames.
If you’ve been sold a 17″ frame the shop needs some staff that know their stuff.
The Nickel climbs well, but has a poor stock fork fitted in the shape of the Sektor R. IT has no damping that I could find, and it dived under braking and bump response which left the bike feeling like the front end was too low, pitching the rider over the front of the bike.
    Not good.
With a better fork, the bike would be excellent.

29er’s although it seems the industry is more than embracing this “fad” and seems to be making it the new mountain bike.

Mountainbikes are 26″ wheeled bikes, and will continue to be so despite this blip on the MTB history radar.

Troutie or Luminous lights will beat the quality of the lights we get offered by our suppliers by a long way. And for les outlay.
    No contest.

Now y’all know why it’s called the hed doctor. You need one to sort you out if you get a problem with it.
I turn the bike upside down and turn the 8mm hex head, jiggling the bike until it grabs.SIMPLES.

I stumbled upon what I thought was a body in the woods on a night ride (shortcut home from work at a local bar). Freaked me right out.
It turned out to be an amourous couple, making out.
Avert gaze to trail, and carry on. Couldn’t resist shouting “nice tits love” as I rode off laughing to myself though.

Aww I’m touched guys, “I must be to work with these bloody lunatics!”
Serously though, it’s great down here. Got my own enclosure and everyfing, as many bananas as I can eat, and I’m in good company with all the other mentally defective folk known as mountainbikers round these here parts.
You’ll find me at the back of the shop swingin off a bike stand as always, singin “ooh ooh ooh, I wanna be like you ooh ooh”, etc.
Just don’t ask me to put the kettle on!
    I’m too busy having fun.
Well, it beats the hell outta workin for a livin.

Call in and say Hi if you got the time.
And bring cake. Lol. (or bananas)

You got a pic? or some tech spec?
It’s likely to be a XC hub. That’ll have 4x 6001 bearings in it, and have a 3 pawl freehub.

Don’t beat yourself up Realman, that’s a part of riding. You’ll come back stronger for it.
Been there, done that, riding much better now it’s outta the way.
Still hurts, but not as much as when I couldn’t ride.

I just ride my bike and enjoy it. I don’t care what others think of me because I’m too busy having fun.
I sometimes try to inject this fun element into my posts, but it often gets misread as being “know it all” in some topics.
Am I Bovvered? nope. I’m just goin to carry on doin my fing coz it makes me appy and stuff.
I do like to wind people up, but if they were chillaxed in the first place, it wouldn’t be a problem.
    Peace and love peeps.

    Check out retrobike.com
All the details should be there.
Like you, I’m just getting into racing old bikes again, but I’ve not got enough info or courage to find out more yet. Just incase there are some really fast guys racing that make me look average.
I used to be good, but these days I just don’t know.

I forgot to fit my mudguard on my fork after servicing recently, and when I descended some sections of trail @ 30+ mph, the crap getting thrown in my eyes was a bit of a problem.
Not seeing corners at speed is a bit of a handicap when you’re trying to ride fast DH, so anyone that disses use of mudguards can’t be riding that fast.
It’s fine to make statements about how “old skool” you are because you like to get covered in mud,( been there, done that, ridin faster now I can see with mudguards) But if you’re going fast and you can’t see, you’re going to crash. And I am “old skool” so you can’t bullshit me MOFO.
So why don’t you peddle your shit to a different audience, coz this one ain’t buyin it. I’ve got shit guards fitted.
    Peace and love man.
    Cop u later fella.

I’d have acted exactly as you did. Until he backed up and came back for a 2nd helping. At that point, you are well within your rights to use “reasonable force ” to protect yourself.
I would have used my martial arts training to subdue the assailant in this instance.
And maybe given him a couple of digs to teach him a lesson in the process, if I’m honest.
But he’s a bully that needs a lesson in manners, so **** him and the horse he rode in on.
