    Surely GMT is an acronym?

    You are thinking of abbreviation.

No – see the definition on Wikipedia that I linked to earlier! I’m being overly pedantic for this thread only, but strictly speaking an acronym would be RADAR, SCUBA, PIN etc. and an initialism would be GMT, HTML etc. They are both abbreviations.

That said people often tend to call any abbreviation ‘acronym’.

Makes no difference to me. I have Solpadeine Max (basically Co-Codamol with caffeine) and then booze afterwards. Guess it affects different people in different ways. As long as you’re sensible I would think you;d be fine…

“acronym”. The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Current English (1991), Oxford University Press. p. 12: “a word, usu[ally] pronounced as such, formed from the initial letters of other words (e.g. Ernie, laser, Nato)”.

Is that “English” enough for you?

Yes, and it supports what I originally pointed out, that ‘GMT’ is not an acronym, but an initialism. STRICTLY speaking of course… ;-)

We do not have fire roads in the uk. We have all sorts of tracks but none of them are fire roads.

“None of them IS fire roads” ;-)

Adding the last word of an acronym into a sentence ie The GMT time is

I believe your example is, more accurately, called an initialism, not acronym. :-)

Although the term acronym is widely used to describe any abbreviation formed from initial letters,[3] most dictionaries define acronym to mean “a word” in its original sense,[4][5][6] while some include a secondary indication of usage, attributing to acronym the same meaning as that of initialism.[7][8][9] According to the primary definition found in most dictionaries, examples of acronyms are NATO (pronounced /?ne?to?/), scuba (/?sku?b?/), and radar (/?re?d?r/), while examples of initialisms are FBI (/??f?bi??a?/) and HTML (/?e?t??ti???m??l/).[4][8][10]

The book also mentions Bank Road in Matlock – one of the steepest residential roads in England – that’s only an 8/10 climb…

    Both in one ride?!

I don’t doubt the intention is honourable but it’s ended up looking like a promotion. Promotions off the back of disasters don’t look good.

If this is/was a truly altruistic act then surly saying in April “We sold loads of Shimano stuff in March and are giving all our profits from this to an appeal.” would have been the way to do it?

Agreed. If the OP wanted to give money to the quake victims he could have done it in a way that didn’t ‘encourage’ extra sales for his business.

    Not cool man, not cool…

Looking at the same thing at the moment, probably going to go with a G12 (although have been wondering about a DSLR and getting the Nikon D3100!)

I have found this website to be very helpful:

Another vote for the Synology Nas. They are essentially a lightweight Linux server so you can install and run software from them.

I use mine to stream video, music, photos to the Xbox360. Also use it to stream music so I can listen at work. Also use it to backup my stuff of course.

Expansion valve. It really is an easy fix and doesn’t need a heating engineer. Just needs your track pump (schraeder valve).

Must have missed this originally, very sad to hear. Just to add my story…

I bought my first ‘decent’ bike from Iain, a brand new GT Zaskar Race – very nice light frame. He spent a while chatting to me and asked my plans for it and then took the time to face the BB and head tubes for me using tools from his immaculate workshop!

Nice guy, very sorry to hear this.

    Just bought one of these:

And use that to stream pics, music and video to the XBox. Really nice solution for me. I’ve ripped all my DVDs onto it, now I never have to get up from the sofa.

I’ve been getting eyestrain recently (programmer) and went to opticians. He said my vision was fine but recommended some reading glasses just for screen use. The female optician said I looked best in the RayBan frames, anyway I ended up paying just over £200 for some +0.25 reading glasses.

My Dad who buys +1 plastic reading glasses for a fiver from petrol stations suggested I might be an idiot. In no uncertain terms :-(

My 1.6TDCi Ford Focus has averaged 53.1mpg across all driving types in the 3000 miles I’ve had it since new. Hardly ever fill it up! Mixture of motorway driving and Surrey back roads.

The really nice thing about it is that the vehicle excise duty is £0.00.

Yes that is good. Obviously his autobiography “Hitch 22” is out but I can’t comment on that as I’m hoping to receive it for Xmas. God Is Not Great is fantastic too and really makes you wish you had his ability for phrase and rhetoric.

I also read his column in Slate each week/fortnight.

Recommend just searching on Youtube too – check out his interview regarding the death of ‘Reverend’ Falwell:

There’s loads of good ones on there.

Has anyone managed to convert adobe epub to kindle format? It’s a real clincher for me getting one for my girlfriend. The library here does ebooks but only in epub, if she could get those onto a kindle I’d buy one in a shot.

I have googled it and it sounds like it can be done but I don’t know how easily.

John Suchet gave me my Gold at St. James’s Palace, met the Duke too. He asked where I was from and I said Lincolnshire and he said “Don’t they all have webbed feet there?”.

On the same theme, I have a combi boiler with all radiators in the house having TRVs. For efficiency, should I set the boiler temp to high so very hot water is going to the rads which will then ‘click off’ earlier, or have the boiler temp set to medium?

In other words, if 3 on a TRV vaguely represents a temperature which I believe it does, should the feed into the rads be hot or does it have no overall effect?

I guess I should test it – have all rads set to 3 and then set boiler to high and see how often and for how long the boiler fires, and then set boiler to medium and compare.

Problem with Nespresso is you can only have their coffees. A bit like only going to one trail centre.

And you have to order them over the internet. That is rubbish :-(

You boys still talking about this?

    Nespresso. You’ll get there.

I’ve had two since the start of this, just drop ’em in, BAM and I’m gone. You’re still grinding and tamping and felching, but I’m gone. It suits me because I’m a business man and I’ve got moves to make.

Get yourself a machine that takes the nespresso pods. It’s the best coffee you can get. There are 16 different ‘Grand Crus’ and it takes a while to be able to understand the subtleties of each one.

You’re absolutely right – I thought Dylan wrote that for some reason.

Great stuff anyway, like all of them. Pretty good sound on “So What?” considering you did it on your phone as well.
