Seen a few comments that it is good for warming a place up, then as soon as it goes off the place goes cold (no stored heat like with rads).

Then I’m thinking, a lot of that must be down to house efficiency (windows / walls) because all the ‘stuff’ in a house stores heat for a while.

How have people found it in terms of going cold quickly?

Agree with Omar. I was riding with a friend who hasn’t done a century before so we took it steady. I started about 7:10ish so most of the club (serious) riders were ahead of me. We took it steady and really enjoyed it. The crowds clapping and cheering were amazing. I had a club jersey on and loads of people singled me out and shouted for me which was really cool. Coming into London and turning onto The Mall was something I’ll never forget, it was deafening.

    Couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

I like Majestic. They have quite a few stores round us but they’ll deliver free as long as you buy 6 bottles. Decent selection.

Bought some carb cleaning spray and a new plug from Halfords last night. Changed the plug, took the air filter off and gave the inlet a good spray. The corrosive liquid rebounded straight into my face. I couldn’t tell if it was tears of sadness or just the caustic cleaning fluids burning my eyeball but either way it hurt.

Still runs badly and did the same thing. The new plug got sooted straight up as well so I’m looking up which is the correct rebuild kit now and will get one ordered, then will take the carb apart. The float valve sounds a likely candidate I think.

I won’t let this defeat me!

It does it repeatedly and more frequently after the first time.

I’ve grown to hate the mower. I just wanted a simple petrol mower. I wanted to cut the grass and go, now I feel emasculated by it. My other half listens to my complaints politely but I can tell she thinks less of me as a man due to this.

Thanks for the advice – might be worth trying Hayter first. If no joy with them I will try cleaning the carb. Will try and find a vid online of how to do that, I have the bad feeling that I will try and springs will fly out everywhere then I’ll have to just throw it away :-(

It’s relatively new, I bought it last year but can’t easily get back to the shop so would have to try Hayter direct.

The temperature comment is interesting – that’s exactly what happens. Turning engine off and back on doesn’t affect it at all, just time, so temperature related is likely.

Yeah I read that can be a common cause so have replaced the fuel completely with fresh.

Could be sticking choke. Something to do with the governor, or maybe just something wrong with the carburettor, really not sure.

It’s strange how it just dies, runs badly for 2 mins then just picks up back to full revs of its own accord…

I’m getting it – somehow it’s getting sent to me. Can I transfer it back – what’s your address?

I couldn’t enjoy it because the set was so fantastic that it just seemed like CGI type shenanigans.

I should say that I have imagination problems in general, but FOR MY MONEY I prefer his ‘real-life’ stuff*

I have a Nexus 4 and totally smashed the screen. Dropped it several times from a beam in the garage during the same rollers session (what a spanner). Anyway looked around and everywhere online quoting £160ish. Took it to Carphone Warehouse and they sent it away, back a week later all done for £79.99. I would strongly recommend you give them a try. Doesn’t matter whether you bought phone from them.

Sure, they are the 2010 ones though, don’t know how much difference there is:

These days, a set of 50mm carbon rims or some light weights could be the difference between a gold and silver time at a sportive.

    missing surely?

Thinking I’m having ITB issues too. I spent a lot of time on road bike setup then a long ride caused sporadic shooting pains in the back of knee. Changed setup but am doing ITB stretches/roller work and seems to be improving. Had some time off the bike and only got a few sharp twinges on a long ride yesterday.

I’m going to carry on the ITB stretches and leg stretches.

Big fan here. I would say they are not everyone’s cup of tea. I digitalised all my music a few years ago, so it works really well for me.

I have a couple of Play 3s around the house (would like more!) – really like it for digital radio too.

Interesting answers. I’m in a similar situation myself and was going to buy some Mavic 2013 Ksyrium Elite S ~£480.

Lot of people recommending handbuilts though, I must admit I don’t really know where to start with those.

Thoughts on the Mavics, or still handbuilts?

Topman do t-shirts with crass sentiments….

Haha, like it. Or as the Minister said on The Thick Of It:

“I know this is what they think people like me think, so I hate thinking it, but I just find myself thinking that they’re from a different **** species. You know, with their t-shirts and weird trousers and tabards. Why do they wear clothing with writing on it? And why are they so fat?”

It’s nonsense that riding a fat-tyred bike will make you fitter. Why would you work any harder on a fat-tyred bike than on a skinny-tyred bike? You will simply choose a gear ratio that suits the resistance you’re feeling and give it the same effort, no matter what you’re riding. However a road bike will reward you by travelling at about twice the speed for the same effort.

Road riding has made me much fitter than 22 years of mountain biking ever did because riding on tarmac allows long periods of sustained effort, which is better training. End of.

    Perfectly put.

Difficult, like others have said generally spend on the frame, but the 105 plus better wheels makes that a great deal.

Being made of carbon does make it feel ‘special’ though, less industrial than these horrible mountain bikes. I think I would still go carbon and upgrade slowly as bits wear out.

Last weekend I did the Ratrace Dirty weekend. Organisation was a joke. Course not complete, 90 minute queues for toilets, 2 hour queues for a shower post race when wet and cold, ran out of food and water at feed stations, promised staged timing was not in place and to top it all off the bar ran out of beer!

Interesting. The weekend before I did the Rat Race Road Trip (London – Edinburgh). I also found food at the pitstops inadequate. Food that was promised was not present, all there was was flapjacks and bananas from Huntingdon to York. That’s a long way to pedal on flapjack. I had to stop at a pub and buy a cheese sandwich. (Didn’t make it to Edinburgh).

Have the clear black iridiums on radar locks, same as above. Just don’t notice them (they’re that good). I set off on a long ride a few weeks ago in the dark, wore them all day until darkness again and they were never once on my mind.

I wear the Assos Mille long distance ones. Did 220 miles in them at the weekend and my arse was the least of my troubles! Saw a lot of other people wearing the same.
