I started off with a BSA Meteor .22 when I was a little nipper. Learned just with open sights… It was the business! From there I went to a Webley Nemesis with a Simmons 3-9 x 40 scope, a Weirauch 95K with a Bushnell Sportview and finally to a Theoben Rapid 7 with a Simmons Airgunner 4-12. I didn’t ever venture over 12 lbs despite having a FAC and shotguns.
I now live in the US and shoot a .223 centerfire Remington and am saving for a .300 Winchester Magnum . I will always look back at my air rifle days fondly 🙂

I have a Dewalt DWE575 and it’s great! It’s my first circular saw, so didn’t know what to look for, but I took the salesman’s advice and am very happy.. It would be nice if it had an electric brake, but i’m super careful when i’m using it anyway (as I know three folk without a full set of ten fingers due to circular saws).

We’ve got a 65″ and DVDs look atrocious compared to HD channels and Bluray… Don’t know how big TVs will have to get before HD doesn’t cut the mustard 😕 My guess is that they are getting pretty close…

    “Because a John Deere can’t work at 110mph “
    Guessing not the UK?
I always wonder how you can switch on/off in the right place and/or follow where you’ve been, ie so you’re not overdosing? Its not like/I guess there are no tramlines for planes or GPS that can ‘work’ for sprayer-planes?
That and how does the ‘draft’/wind effects of a plane effect the evenness of the spray?

Nope, I now live in the U.S. in Kansas. A LOT of open space… Pretty much everything out here is agriculture related. I love it! Must get a picture of some of the more conventional tractors to post…

Anyhoo, the spray planes do have GPS. There is a lightbar in front of the pilot that guides left and right to what has been sprayed already. It’s a little like a Tron version of the guide lines on a back-up camera screen. There are automatic spray systems that open and close the booms when the plane is lined up, but they are not popular as spraying is so wind dependent that everything is a lot more tactical than that… A good pilot can be accurate within about 2 feet. My father-in-law’s party trick is dropping water right up to a person/truck and stopping short right in front of them. It’s crazy impressive!
Drift is a huge part of spraying, as it is used to direct spray away from roads, houses and sensitive crops. With the size of some of the fields here winds can be different directions from one end to the other, so it is very complex. Generally we only spray in winds below 12mph and in temperatures below 105ºF (the spray hangs in the air when the ground temp is too high). One of our competitors killed $300,000 of wheat a few years ago when he sprayed when it was too hot and the chemical drifted over half a mile. We have to be extremely careful! I know an awful lot of pilots from racers and stunt pilots to airline pilots and instructors, and they all have huge respect for good crop dusters…

On a related topic I saw this fella in the Duty-free at Heathrow earlier in the year…

    A 59 year Dalmore… If you can’t quite read the price it’s £13,000! Christ!

skidsareforkids – nah, they belong in the sky don’t they?

Most of the time yeah! There are incidents from time to time tho… When we are going full-tilt each plane can spray up to 6,000 acres in a day. Because a John Deere can’t work at 110mph 😉

You can’t win… I know as many people that have wrecked bikes on roof-racks as have done it with tow-bar or boot mounted racks… In the car is the only safe way, but you have to be pretty anally-retentive about it lest your interior gets trashed up pretty quick 🙁
I have a pickup now, so i feel a lot more confident, though I guess having a van trumps all…

The “Fox seal” idea sounds like BS to me, as the smallest diameter fork stanchion they do is 32mm and the shocks are larger again… I’d like to be proven wrong on this though, as I have a joplin that could also do with a better seal, though no damage as yet 😐

That’s too funny… I just saw this for sale in the local petrol station this morning… How I laughed! The Russians with the BMX helmets are a particular highlight for me 😆

The Park PRS-3 is pretty much the industry standard (likely as Madison are the distributor) and they are excellent stands, however in a busy workshop you will find you will need a rebuild kit every few years as they develop a bit of slop after a while. Spares are readily available and aren’t that expensive, but it’s worth keeping in mind. Also it’s worth threadlocking all the bolts before you start using them as they can work loose otherwise…

I’m still rocking a MK1 32Gb 3G and for the first year or so didn’t have the 3G activated, but I got a data plan for it before the summer and love it! My iphone gets used for Wikipedia, Facebook, Skype, Weather etc and the pad gets used for Netflix and Hbo streaming and it’s tethered to my car stereo for streaming Pandora radio. It seems to work out great for data usage as i’m not always going over my phone data limit every month. 😀

Had a customer once upon a time who insisted on a Hollywood F3 thingy (your basic tubular folding rack with 6 straps for 3 bikes) for his Mercedes SL soft-top. We made him sign a waiver acknowledging that we recommended against it and he went on his way. It started off ok, but as he went down the road it gradually levered the bootlid backwards and open exposing the roof folding mechanism. No permanent damage, but a lesson learned… 🙄

We have three in the house and they are superb! Use them for everything… Youtube is great quality, however i would say that it downloads quite a large buffer before starting to play, which can be a little frustrating, but i have only ever used HD content so that may be why… Our broadband averages 4.9Mbps so i don’t know if thats a factor too. Also, typing search criteria with the tiny remote is time consuming.
As a comparison, we have a Samsung Smart TV which has Youtube etc also, and the TV system is a little slower than the Apple TV…

I know a guy that has one of those carbon Lahar bikes actually, and he has been tormented constantly ever since getting it… It looks part way between a leaf-blower and a stick insect eating a grape.

I live in western Kansas (adjacent to Colorado) and the news is jammed full with the story… Tragic! The suspect is is currently in his apartment wired with “incendiary devices” whilst police surround him. Apparently the guy claimed to be “the joker”. The news said he was in swat gear and had his hair and beard dyed red “like the joker” (wtf?)
I think the disorientation of the movie theatre exacerbated the carnage. Witnesses claimed they thought it was a publicity stunt until it was all over and they saw the blood.
Theatres here have armed security at night, and many people (including my wife) can legally carry concealed weapons for self-defence. I am quite surprised nobody responded to the threat there and then. Very early to speculate…

My sympathy goes out to all those involved.

Edit: My mistake – The assailant was detained outside the theatre and is not inside the booby-trapped apartment

Ernie – I’m not super-comfortable around spiders (especially ones that can kill me) so the more space I keep between myself and them the better (especially the nests)! Shudder! You should see how we deal with rattlers! ;P

Busydog – Yes, we’re practically neighbors lol! I moved here from Scotland in Dec ’10 and it took me a while to really understand how huge this country is! I live 17 miles from the Colorado state line and when I first moved here I thought “I will be able to go play in The Rockies all the time!” Well, it’s happened once so far lol! I do love it here though! My wife and I (she is from here) are not sure if we will live here forever or not, but we have a short list so far of Utah, Washington, North Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky or Oregon… Most of which she has lived at one point or another, and it was such a ball-ache getting my visa in the first place, that we are bound to find one state that suits us both… I have a lot of exploring to do first! 8)
Ps. Yeah, we only really see tarantulas here in the fall when they migrate… I’m told they sometimes swarm in the hundreds, but a little south from here in Oklahoma they are often in the thousands! Yuck

Roper- I live in SW Kansas now… A far stretch from Glasgow! We have lots of creatures out here! Black Widows, Brown Recluses, massive Wolf Spiders, Tarantulas, big Centi/Millipedes, Rattlesnakes, Box Turtles, Antelope, some Bears, Mountain Lions, Skunks… I see something new just about every day!

They site the number of road deaths on country roads as the reason for the proposed reduction in speed limit, but I bet not even half of the accidents reported occurred within the 60mph speed limit, so i refuse to see how people would obey an even lower one!

I think there should be an option to sit a harder driving test and pay higher road tax and insurance, with more stringent M.O.T standards just to be allowed to drive faster…

Good luck canceling your Virgin service! It took over a month for me to get them to cancel my subscription and subsequently refund me as I had already sent back the box and moved out of my flat. Then a month after that i got a bill from them for £0.02! What a joke…

My Mrs was pissed at me for almost a week because I’ve lost 15lbs this summer… She only finally told me what was up once she had already gotten over it. Ironically her mom is a clinical psychologist, but I think I’d truly end up in the shit books if I went up to her and said “your daughter can be mental sometimes” 😯

Maybe you should tell your employer how hard you try to push the Trek brand and keep his shop and your wages going…
Nice troll though. But there are a lot betterer subjects to really get the feather spitters going.
    POSTED 1 DAY AGO # REPORT-POST

Actually I work in the aviation industry now, so fortunately that gives me the luxury to impartially comment based on over a decade of experience.

Emily Batty… Yum… I wondered how far i would have to read this thread before a pic was posted 😉
Anyways, I have worked in several bike shops over the last 12 years and always considered Trek to be the “beigest” of bikes, but they have stepped up their game so much in the last five years or so that I truly believe they are hard to beat for off-the-peg. Also the warranty is crazy good. They would probably be the first brand I would recommend to someone these days… And no, I don’t work for a dealer. I would say Gaint and Scott now battle it out for the beige title 🙂
Anyway, here’s another pic for good measure

My father-in-law has two merlin engines in storage for a “project”, but i have never heard one run 🙁
He has an Allison in a P-51A and a Pratt & Whitney radial retro-fitted in a Yak-11 running. Both of those are thunderous!
He restores old aircraft as a hobby… Alright for some! 😯 I digress…
