mix, but most get some kind of sponsorship.
gets harder to raise money the more you ride your bike though.

any bike is allowed. there was a couple of cx’s last year.

think so, but it’s better to do it before as in my experience you end up taking ages queuing and filling out forms when you just want to get off and start riding.

heard very good reviews & recommendations about it and will be heading down there soon myself very soon.

Perfect for newer riders, but also fun ridden fast for experienced riders.

the Brunswick pub is near the finish as is mentioned as the place to meet (start at least anyway) here (near the bottom): http://www.roughrideguide.co.uk/mtbike/2010/09/london-to-south-coast-off-road-bike-ride-2011/#comment-236

I’ve done the one in this book http://www.roughrideguide.co.uk/Mountain-bike-rides-to-the-South-West-A4-size.html

Similar to the Sustrans one, but with some nice off road bits here and there to keep it a bit more interesting.

Done it over 3 days with (pregnant) wife and friends and also myself and a mate did it on cyclocross bikes in one day… and missed the train back as we were faffing and didn’t leave until about midday and thought there was a later train. 😳

Its a major hassle (for wife) getting back if you miss the train 😆

couple of big (rooty) climbs in the middle too.
nothing very technical buy be careful on the roots if it is wet, especially with ss tyres.

I’ve done it on the cx with sb8 tyres. fast n fun.

it’s on the left hand bend (on the right hand side) just at the top before you drop down into Shere (Checkpoint 2). Grid ref: TQ 071/494
There should be a marshal stood around that point.

    e-mail http://www.roughrideguide.co.uk/mtbike/2010/09/london-to-south-coast-off-road-bike-ride-2011/ for a gpx file.

    3rd – try sending a picture.

DX wouldn’t send a missing part from my order until I took a picture of it, then they said they’d replace it. I couldn’t get it through to them that I couldn’t take a picture of the part that wasn’t there.

    They never replaced it 🙁

I’d go to porlock and ride a load of the classic trails around there and choose a quiet valley to camp down in.

Doh, you just missed the British Heart Foundation event.

It’s in the South East book by http://www.roughrideguide.co.uk which is out of print now and it’s not in the replacement package but there is a pdf version. e-mail and ask.

    not local to Surrey.

found these, but think I want to test first – not sure which firmness to go for http://www.mattressonline.co.uk/Shop/Pillows-C23/Latex-Pillows-C155/Latex-F372/

hmm yeah the majority of people seem to concur what I thought.
Think I’ll give them a miss and look at the alternatives.

    Thanks.

to be fair to MBR route guides, as Esme says, they do them for all over the place and for all abilities so are spread a lot thinner. I do prefer the Singletrack and WMB approach i.e. one area, well done though.

Also I doubt a long time local guide would produce a ride good enough for a STW forum dweller (like myself) 😉

join Groupon they keep knocking out bargain offers (down to £250) on memory foam mattresses, hmmmmm comfy.

Bit warmer than our previous foam mattress, but it is good.

it’s just a small bit that you wouldn’t notice missing. i looked at another and saw a little black plastic cross was missing.

just lycra is soooo much better if you don’t mind being unsociable – and it is a race.
    get a saddle bag.

if you’re not man enough, i find them (singletracks) good although i prefer the mt500 in the wet.

discarded inner tubes in the countryside annoy me more though.
often bring an extra one home.

tend to only need a patch and they work again tho 😉

Wingnut Enduro. weight sits low (on your hips, not your back) very easy to access side pockets and waterproof or the larger Adventure pack.

but… What MTB are giving away a free Osprey bag when you subscribe to the mag I think!

SatMap for me. Big screen is very handy. No HRM, but lots of other riding stats.

Garmin 800 is a faff to use for navigating from, but best for training aid or flashy bike computer.

There is some great gnarly riding in the rough ride guidebooks (south West or exmoor & dartmoor one). Not afraid of a bit of grrrr

you get the gpx files for free when you buy the book too. http://www.roughrideguide.co.uk/rough-ride-guide-books.html 😉
