Ok, I think I might be swayed to the rubber jig-saw now then.

    <span style=”font-size: 0.8rem;”>Anyone used/tried lino? </span>

Thanks, I imagine the rubber jig-saw is hard to cut/shape though isn’t it? Works out more expensive than the rolls too.

Paint is very tempting as so easy but I want some insulation.

I like the idea of carpet tiles but think they’d get too filthy tbh.

I used to dislike the old railway line, but it’s grown on me – if fit you can smash along it (and get past people). CX bike harsh in places but fast and fine, so a hardtail mtb would be good.

The SDW is much more physically challenging (it is around 100 miles and 12,000 ft) but there isn’t anything really technical on it other than the ruts really and going too fast around a corner. The L2BOR is physically easier (although don’t under estimate riding on the flat as it requires a constant output which MTB’ers can suffer with) and there isn’t too much in the way of technical challenges apart from a couple of descents and some singletrack

I spoke to someone from Whyte and despite the name, or letter ‘S’ it won’t ‘switch’ to 27.5+ wheels though, just 29 flavour.

I was going to mention dark star brewery too if you just wanted to drink.

Thanks everyone, I won’t be camping out, so I’ll stock up on Avon Skin-So-Soft and just go.

I have 4 different bumbags but none are great when (weighty  carrying water, but/so I use a bottle when using them. When I need to carry a bit more or its particularly muddy or covered in horse poo out I use the new Wingnut 1.8 which is great. Holds a good amount of water and ‘stuff’ and stays low out of the way and stable and doesn’t get sweaty or squeeze your bladder like a bumbag.

Very clever. Co<span style=”font-size: 0.8rem;”>uld a mucky nutz be made into a cod piece to stop me getting mucky nuts from the front wheel too? </span>

I’m doing London to Brighton @ Night Off-road! On 1st September.

Starts Saturday night and finishes on the seafront with the sun coming up. All being well.

Another Wingnut loyalist here. It sorted out my back issues too.

Yep, I’ll be doing it. Beautiful part of the country and some lovely riding to boot. Some big hills to conquer.

    Thanks.

It’s to do a variety of riding and have soft bags but need some panniers for certain things/jobs so will look at Tubas (which I hadn’t heard of). The Surly (Troll) does look pretty ideal too so could be the option if I need to change the bike. . I have a Singular Swift too, but no mounts on that either. Cheers all, some good food for thought (and investigation) there.

Lots of fantastic riding there. This book covers lots of great riding with plenty of technical riding on offer https://www.roughrideguide.co.uk/Exmoor-and-Dartmoor-with-FREE-route-expansion-pack

I believe Singletrack will be reviewing some soon…

I love the new Wingnut 1.8. I used the 2.5 a lot before which is great for biggish rides, but the 1.8 is ideal for a few hours when I can’t stash enough stuff on myself and the bike.

Lots of bum bags available atm too (I have a few) and although good if you only want to carry tools, some foods, etc they become annoying if weighted down with water or stuffed too full. I probably  prefer to fill pockets, bottle cages and use straps to hold things on the bike.

thanks. looks like it would be worth me insuring it if I get one then.
I normally moan you often can’t get things fixed – but at that price!!

Thanks for the replies, good to see the non-edge-gimmickery one wins the popular vote.

I have a (Chinese) One Plus One currently which has been really good tbf, but the battery is dying and keeps crashing so thought I’d go back to Samsung. I think all brands seem to play up after around 2-3 years though, so the Ulefone is very tempting.

Damn you. Same happened to my Ute a couple of months back and I just replaced it like-for-like at great expense. It does annoy me how it catches the ground when riding and doesn’t work (stand) too well when on off road too.

Thanks I’ll look into the colido delta – there is one on amazon down to £200, supposedly from £600.

What are people’s thoughts of which to get now (that they may have had more of a play with the Aldi or Tevo Tarantula)?

I’ve got the unenviable task of buying one for my FIL even though I have no experience or knowledge of them.

Is the Aldi worth the extra £’s?

    Thanks

I have a mid drive Bafang one which has been very reliable. Bit ugly with all the extra cables and magnets if using disc brakes and it really needs a better mount for the bb but will do if not regular heavy usage I guess.

It is good being able to switch it to another bike (as I now am) or if you can’t get that bike specific bike with an electric motor, but otherwise I’d go for a purpose built one. Although not just yet, until they sort out the bb issues there seems to be.

Brilliant, thanks for the Strava link Matt.

I’ve worked the other routes out now too, so should have enough to keep me busy. Thanks everyone.

Wow, is that white quartzite bit on the trail or do you venture off to go up it to come back down?

Is the Tollie path/Gairloch route still worth a ride though?

Think I have that guide book actually, somewhere, so will hunt it out.

Hopefully going in October again. Had some fab weather in the past then and no midges.

Whitestone, do you have a gpx for the route further north, I’m having trouble working out where you mean to go exactly. Thanks.

Brilliant, thanks for all the advice so far.

Tollie sounds like it could be OK then, and the Loch will be worth a trip too. I’ll have a look at the map this evening and hopefully work those other recommendations into my plans too.

Yeah it’s the Skyline 10LR. I have that one. Nice bag. It does sit lower than normal bags, though not as low as a Wingnut and it’s got a smaller capacity. However if you don’t need to carry lots or bulky items it’s very good and has various compartments to store your bits, plus it comes with a nice pack for tools etc.

Ah ok, I thought the new Samsungs were supposed to have a pretty good battery. Will look into Blackview – look to be some good deals on it too, where did you get yours from?

Not suitable for a young nipper as the hills are a reasonable size. Not a very technical trail, but fun and lumpy.

The Wingnut assault holds a bladder and just the bare essential tools.

I’m interested to try the Source bum bag. The camelbak bumbag I have is neat but it bounces around and is too heavy when the bladder is filled.

Wingnut are doing a new smaller version of the 2.5 too (called 1.8). They also do a smaller assault bag too.

Thanks. Yeah I saw them, which is what has got me hovering over the buy now button. Seen some reviews from the US, but was interested to hear from any ‘real’ people over here who’ve managed to ride one.
