As someone had said above it might be someone nearby that had a wifi router in the same band.
You can change this in the settings. Had to do it on mine recently and is made a world of difference.
singletrackstinkerFree MemberIf you’re near Southampton or Newbury I can probably sort you out with one.
Let me know and I’ll see if I can dig out everything from the loft.
singletrackstinkerFree MemberAfan (Whites) and Cwmcarn (Twrch) on Saturday and Sunday with a couple of mates who haven’t done much in the way of cycling.
Despite trying, I still can’t clear the tabletops at the beginning of energy or the step up doubles on the black section at the top of Twrch.
Not sure whether i need more speed or better technique. One thing’s for sure, bigger balls will be required in either case.
singletrackstinkerFree MemberThanks for the suggestions 🙂
We did Brechfa last time and although its one of the best trails i’ve ridden in S Wales it’s a bit too far to drive from Southampton (we’re only driving up on Saturday, leaving Sunday)
I’m tempted by FOD as the equivalent journey time is the same as driving up and going to Afan/Brecon. Plus there’s the new bit of trail, isn’t there?
I’ve not heard of Cwm Rhaedr until today but will be bookmarking it for a future visit. Thanks!
singletrackstinkerFree MemberSame here, we’ve got a bunkhouse booked which we’re not sure we can cancel.
Do you know how many trails are closed? I tried to marry up what the press release said with the trail map but couldn’t really work out where the underpass was.
Trying to decide where to go now… Been to afan twice in the last couple of months so don’t really want to ride there again. Any suggestions on good trails on the brecon beacons?
singletrackstinkerFree MemberI’ve got a 2007 Stumpy with the brain and 140mm Talas up front.
To answer your questions….
Does it stay locked out too much?
If I wind the dial most of the way round to ‘firm’ the suspension is very hard although there is still enough travel to comfortably handle chatter associated with uphill or flat ground.Does it give a softer ride over rocks – downhill and uphill?
I tend to switch settings at the top of a ride if I remember. Generally I ride with mine about 5 or 6 clicks from the full settings uphill and, if I remember, wind it round to full soft downhill. It feels supple enough to handle the hits downhill whilst not being too soft uphill. I have a limited frame of reference though and can’t compare to the more modern Pro-Pedal/CTD systems which are out there. There’s relatively little pedal bob when sat down but it’s a bit bouncy if you stand up and mash the pedals. I weigh just over 11st so your wife should have a similar experience unless, well… uhm… you get the picture.
Is the Brain adjustable enough?
It seems to be, although I think you’ll find one setting and either stick with it or use the settings within a few clicks of that + full firm.In terms of trail centre/downhill use, I’ve not found anything to complain about. I’ve ridden lots of reds and blacks in Wales and never had cause to complain about the bike. The biggest challenge i’ve probably given the bike is hammering it round penmachno (through the droppy rock garden bits) and I had nothing to complain about. It also handled the jumpy/swoopy black at Llandegla without any problems.
Climbing is easier with the fork locked down to 100mm but at 140mm the bike still climbs well – you just need to get your weight over the nose of the saddle and drop your elbows to keep the front planted.
I’ve stuck a shorter stem and wider bars on mine and enjoy the more planted feeling it gives over the standard long stem and narrower bars.
I’ve also stuck a 2.4 on the front and run a 2.3 on the back although I spent the summer running a 2.0 on the back (in case you’re wondering how much rubber you can get between the fork or stays.
Off to Bike Park Wales this weekend so I’ll let you know how it feels at a more downhill orientated centre when I get back.
singletrackstinkerFree MemberHaven’t been successful removing the bolt, despite trying the torx tool and epoxy.
Looks like I need a T35 tool and only have T40 or T30 and epoxy wouldn’t set (one of those cheapish unibond syringes).
Going to have another go tonight banging a flat head screwdriver into the hole which seemed to be the only thing with any purchase.
On the bright side, I managed to get the middle ring off the drive side crank meaning I could still go out for a ride on Sunday.
I’ve also got so many replacement bolts I’ll never have to worry about them rounding off again because I’ll be able to replace immediately. If anyone needs a couple of replacement bolts let me know, I’ve got 50!
singletrackstinkerFree Member@andy – Segments in private zones aren’t recorded AFAIK.
singletrackstinkerFree MemberIf you’re using motor drive I’d use ‘AI SERVO’.
AI SERVO tracks a moving object through the frame and focuses on that, it’s reasonably reliable although i think performance depends on the camera.
Nice photos by the way, particularly like the black and white at the bottom and the one of the chap in the maroon fox t-shirt.
singletrackstinkerFree MemberNot really interesting but definitely rank.
A big lump of cheese from a bike trip 4 weeks ago (must remove that soon)
A packet of ham from same bike trip (daren’t open it)
2 Part baked baguettes
A bed sheet
A bivvy bag
An archive box lid (useful to stop annoying rattles against the windows from handlebars)The missus got in the car last night and suggested that a valet deal on groupon might be a good idea, she hasn’t seen my desk…
singletrackstinkerFree MemberNot really, but then again I don’t think that going on the apprentice makes you a particularly attractive prospect to any employer.
That is unless employers like arrogant, deluded, self aggrandizing knob jockeys.
singletrackstinkerFree MemberMy missus has a hardrock 29er and she runs smorgasbords front and back without a problem.
Is it rubbing both sides on the rear?
Bit worried I should’ve checked more closely last time I fitted them now!
singletrackstinkerFree MemberA couple of guys I ride with suffer from hand cramps, usually after long descents or progressively getting worse when we do long bike rides with multiple descents.
I’d always assumed it had something to do with them either gripping the bars too tightly or having too much weight on their arms.
One of them has just changed to a wider bar with some new grips so it’ll be interesting to see if that helps. The other guy’s new to mtb so it’ll be just as interesting to see if he stops complaining as he does more.
Out of interest, have you been able to work out whether its caused by a particular type of riding? i.e. very technical descents or very fast and you’re braking a lot?
singletrackstinkerFree MemberShe said that despite owning three properties, she had been forced to apply for housing benefit and is also considering applying for jobseekers allowance.
Saw that too. Seems like she’s clever enough to win the apprentice but not clever enough to think about selling one of her houses to cover some of her other expenses/reduce her costs.
I’m still not entirely convinced that it’s not just a massive publicity stunt that she thinks will help her get into another high flying position though…
singletrackstinkerFree MemberThanks. Yup – That plastic thing was really tight when I went to undo it last night.
I don’t remember doing it up that tightly as the guide I read said finger tight but will be extra gentle next time round.
Fingers crossed I can slide the middle ring off the other side and ignore the rounded bolt issue for a bit longer!
singletrackstinkerFree MemberIs the Pretension adjusted on the BB or something to do with the crank?
I tightened the BB using a special spanner as I presumed tighter is better. Can’t see anything on the crank which would allow me pretension anything
singletrackstinkerFree MemberDefinitely have some of those little fellers hanging around. I’ll try and knock one in tonight.
It did cross my mind to try and get the ring off the other side but the cranks feel a bit stiff when they spin. I put a spot of grease on the spindle when I put them in last time, not sure whether I shouldn’t have, or whether I should’ve put a lot more in. Hence thinking that it might be best to get the crank arm off and have a proper look at what’s going on.
Hooray for amateur mechanics :/
singletrackstinkerFree MemberI’ll have a go with the Torx tool.
Any advice on size? i.e. next size up from the allen key i’ve been using?
Does the hammering wreck the tool?
No threadlock fortunately, mainly since I don’t have any of that.
singletrackstinkerFree MemberThanks guys 🙂
I’ll head over and check the sites out.
singletrackstinkerFree MemberAnyone bought? what’s the delivery time like?
Just wondering because i can’t afford one until pay day (end of this week) and if I order I’d like it before a trip to bike park wales the following weekend….
singletrackstinkerFree MemberSounds a bit fishy but i’ve been in the same job for 8 years and am lucky to have a reasonable employer.
https://www.gov.uk/taking-sick-leave – Only mentions that for periods under 7 days that the norm is for self certification. It does mention that over 7 days you might be classed as ‘may be fit to work’ by your doc and that you should chat with your employer.
If anything, it sounds like a relatively crude way of getting round ‘duvet days’ rather than just addressing the problem members of staff.
Plus I bet you they aren’t offering more time off if you have to work more than your contracted hours either!
I’d be trying to get as many people as possible to give a unanimous middle finger to the management!
singletrackstinkerFree MemberSpent the weekend up in N Wales, although only doing half the original plan.
Still was a fun first trip to Penmachno and a stop at Llandegla before the long drive back to Southampton.
Enjoyed the big difference between the two trails but still trying to decide which i prefer.
Definitely didn’t enjoy the granny ring ascent of the fire road at Llandegla (after you come out of the forest at the start) because of the ridiculous head winds.
singletrackstinkerFree MemberJust to confirm a post above 2007 Stumpjumper FSRs do. Or at least my one, with the brain, does.
singletrackstinkerFree MemberI’ve got the nukeproof ones. They seem pretty good, i.e. no slippage, comfortable on all day rides, don’t stink too much.
Seen a couple of falls and they seem to be bearing up well.
AFAIK they’re the same design as the old kyle straits. I say AFAIK, i mean, I read on the interwebs so it must be true.
singletrackstinkerFree MemberI could be interested and could probably find another person or two to get involved as long as dates work.
My knowledge of the Purbecks is relatively limited though so wouldn’t be able to recommend where we go…
I’ve sent you a quick email with my details on.
Edit: and while I remember, i’m no steve peat.
singletrackstinkerFree MemberI prefer QECP, more of a proper trail feel about it although as people have said, if it’s wet it can be slippery.
Swinley is also good but a lot of the red can be quite boring. Plus you feel like you’ve done a lot of pedaling by the time you’ve finished.
singletrackstinkerFree MemberNo riding for me this weekend but made a start on servicing the bike and getting it ready for a trip to snowdon in a couple of weeks.
The chunky monkey and shiny clean cassette both look good. Now just have to decide whether I want to put a new chain on it or clean the existing one…
singletrackstinkerFree MemberThe missus recently had a break in at her office.
Ignored her iMac and stole a bag of drumstick lollies.
Bastards.
singletrackstinkerFree MemberCheers, planning on rangers/telegraph. Fingers crossed for no mechanicals.
That’s probably jinxed it.
singletrackstinkerFree MemberI wear a pair of old pseudo skate shoes. Not particularly stiff but have a very flat sole i.e. no big chunky tread. Find that that type of sole helps gripping onto the grub screws.
It definitely feels like I get less power out of bendy soled trainers than an spd/road shoe. So maybe some of the pain is getting used to the difference in stiffness and it’ll improve if you keep at it?
singletrackstinkerFree MemberAlso thinking about doing snowdon in a couple of weeks.
How concerned do i need to be about punctures/blown tyres? Would you recommend taking more than 2 spare tubes?
I appreciate it’s a little bit of a ‘how long is a piece of string’ question but didn’t think it looked too bad on the videos I’ve seen on youtube.
singletrackstinkerFree MemberHad an interesting moment when I opened the door to a jehovah’s witness (oap) lady in just my undercrackers on a saturday morning.
Judging by her reaction i’m a lost cause.
singletrackstinkerFree MemberThank Njee!
Will see how I get on tomorrow night.
Dan
singletrackstinkerFree Memberedit – no longer doing HD pairs
Spoke to ze germans and they should be back in Stock in september. New models or something.
HTH
singletrackstinkerFree MemberThat was from about 2005. Rode really nice but it was a bit of an acquired taste as the forks moved backwards in a sort of J path, rather than up-down like a regular telescopic
Unusual! Can’t really picture how that’d work.
How was it on steep stuff? The uprights on the fork make it look like it would be hard work.
singletrackstinkerFree MemberPreston – My old Preston. A face only it’s mother could like
Never seen anything like that before, what’s it like to ride?
