Really don’t get why folk think Bradley Wiggins/Team GB cycling has anything to do with the cycling we do.

Because at one time they used to do the cycling we do, and they motivate more people to do the cycling that we do.

    Does that help?

I had one a while back, not so good, as weak signal equates to no signal as opposed to a bit noisy.

Both now climb competitively – properly at a “commercial” wall

Strange, competitive climbing seems all wrong to me. Not sure why, but it doesn’t really seem like the kind of thing which should be competitive.

To further the criminal advice, another old lag once advised me that before I embarked upon any criminal endeavour I should work out how much my cut would be.. then I should weigh it up against how much that would equate to, per hour for the duration of my sentence, if I was to get caught and sent down..

This is terrible advice!! The two events are almost mutually exclusive. If you got caught, you almost certainly wouldn’t have the money to balance against your time inside.

The only way that this would work would be to calculate a balance of probabilities and even then, it would only make sense in the long run.

You’d have been better off studying mathematics and statistics instead of listening to that fella.

I then have to sort through all of it and separate it into the different charities for the girls to open and deal with the money,

another thing is companies which employ children to open envelopes and deal with money

people who don’t understand lane discipline when going round a corner. You wouldn’t cut me up like that in your car would you?!

You mean pedestrians with no lane discipline??

    – people who fail to see the STAND ON THE RIGHT signs every two metres on the escalator and stand on the LEFT!!!

This seems only to bother those who have lived in The South.

Oh, and what bothers me is folks who come through amber lights very late, often when they have turned amber when they are still on approach. Even more annoying when I’m waiting to turn right.

So annoying that I’ve somewhat irresponsibly taken to moving forward a bit as they go through, often causing them to swerve slightly.

Every office I’ve worked in there always at least one major fatty. A man or woman whose sheer bulk could’ve carried it’s own gravitational field.

Worked at an office supplies place once. The accounts lady had a 50cc twist n go scooter.
4 of us managed to manhandle it on top of the diesel storage tank 10′ up and park it there on its kickstand. She went totally mental. The boss then had to come and calm her down and convincingly “tell us off” in front of her. (He was one of the 4 guilty persons, the bastard).

    Hilarious!

I continue to use racist terms, despite it being pointed out to me that they might be offensive.

    plop, how old are you?
We had a Chinese kid in my school, he was always called chink, chinky, Charlie Chan, Fu Man Chu, Chinese Detective. Even the teachers picked it up.

Was he offended? Not hugely, he didn’t like it but he didn’t really have many options

I think often people don’t realise that the terminology the use is not entirely appropriate, often brought out when they are out of their environment. Having said that, few racist actually believe they are racist, often seeing themselves as folks who aren’t afraid to tell it like it is. Many think that their view is widely shared.

If someone i knew used the word ‘chinky’ in any sense, I’d tell them it wasn’t a very nice word. Perhaps it’s not as heavily loaded as ‘the N word’ but still. I was introduced to a fella recently who used the term ‘spade’ as a racial grouping, I waa slightly surprised but did not do anything, merely listened warily for any other indications of ignorance. None were forthcoming so I let it slide. I didn’t find it particularly offensive, but I’m pretty sure I’ll not be becoming his friend. Not so much because he was racist, more because I think he was gay.

I once spent an entire evening poring over OS maps of western Scotland looking for the island of Struay as my daughter was learning about it in school. (KS1 Geography, theres loads on the web about the place, even maps of the island). Whole place is made up.

Not made up, it is know as Coll, to the rest of us

I’ve been to a few interviews on a unicycle, and I *always* put mountain unicycling on my CV. Being slightly different from the last person guarantees they’ll remember you, and the odd hobby gives you a guaranteed question that you’ll be able to talk about interestingly.

What kind of Mickey Mouse job asks you for your hobbies??

4 black lads playing dominoes kept playing but didn’t speak & placed their dominoes down quietly

    Well, that’s good to hear.

The only one’s who kept yapping were 4 travelling lads playing cards & some asians who turned their music up.
    Respect to those who respect.

I think it might be a strange situation for such a group. It seems that Remembrance is for remembering the British and Commonwealth servicemen who died in the wars. In such a situation, they might have felt excluded. I mean it would depend if they were from a Commonwealth country or not. But it must be a complex situation, with complex emotions, in which an occupying force recruited locals to fight to maintain their position over the local population.

I choose this time to remember members of my family who fought to defend their people when the invaders came, and fought to resist them when they stayed, then they fought to liberate themselves when the imperialist arrived and displaced the invaders, then they fought to free themselves of the imperialists and the invaders came back and they fought for their freedom once more. Eventually, after many years of sacrifice, they were given back their country. Many died for this freedom, I chose to remember them.

Now I think you’re taking the internet – and STW in particular – way too seriously there. It’s an internet forum, not a crack house.

That’s my point. If walking / riding away from this forum leaves you in angst, then you probably need to pause for thought. Much the same for most internet discussions. Internet people are the easiest to ignore.

In fairness, it might have been a blip and he is quite calmly and rationally getting on with his life. In fact that may well be a measure of he ‘decentness’. This should only be a small part of our lives. The measure of our sanity is how well we cope when it is taken away.

but he is definitely a nice bloke. There is no argument about that.

??? But there isn’t agreement on it.

He may have a different viewpoint on how to join in an argument, and he may lose control of his tongue sometimes, but that does not mean he’s not a good bloke.

You are right, but it does make it less likely. I know a guy who gets abusive and aggressive whenever you mention ferrets. Doesn’t mean he’s not a decent fella, just not very nice, sometimes.

Come on. If you don’t know it’s really not fair to make such comments.

I should perhaps have put ‘if’ in italics.

But you are right, i don’t know the bloke so maybe should reserve judgement. But lot’s of people seem to say he wasn’t very nice. I’m quite democratic in that respect

Is this still going on? Fred must be pishing himself

It’s interesting that he has managed to devise a way of inserting himself (ahem) back into this forum by proxy of a specifically-designed Facebook page.

    Effective strategy, so far

Yes, but from my view, he doesn’t sound like a very nice fella, seems that he had thrived on being a ‘big hitter’ but this thread would certainly make one reconsider their internet persona. He certainly doesn’t seem popular and no likes to find out that their friends don’t actually like them. I didn’t know him, but I do feel a bit sorry for him. A lot of this must be hard to take, even if it is the truth.

The only reason I didn’t think of marriage personally was due to me being single and that hell may freeze over before bigoted people relaxed their views

that was pretty much my point, especially as all our gay heroes were going fishing

Out of interest, Singletracked, do you have any views on injuries sustained from rotational forces due to the usage of cycle helmets?

This happened last time time had an extended discussion on homsexuality. Folks start off all PC and right-on, pretending to defend the rights of gay people and eventually grow tired of the pretence and some little jibe veiled as humour comes out.

As before, thanks for your support. Nice chatting, we must do it again sometime

Yes, gay people wanted to get married 30 years ago. I have met people thrown out of their houses by hateful bigoted families after the death on their long term partner…. while at the same time emptying the bank account and forcing a house sale.

yup seen that with 2 straight men

I was around and just realising I was gay 30 years ago (who would have thought I was this old?!). Yes, gay people wanted to get married 30 years ago.

No, they didn’t. If so, only in the abstract. 30 years ago gay people would have been over the moon at the idea of civil partnership. Gay people didn’t even think about the possibility of getting married
