I belive the Haro designer is a big WTB fan and has been chatting with Mark, Charlie and Steve.

Quite a few of the "classic" brands are still going in one form or another. IF was formed from ex-Fat City Cycles for example. Steve Potts is now building impossibly lovely Ti frames now….

Sadly not my workshop, that one was with Stve Potts getting a disc brake mount put on the Ti back end.

WTB Pheonix, Yo Eddy Wicked Fat, Ibis Mojo, Salsa A La Carte (jelly bean paint job)…so many nice bikes.

I know the geometry of the Haro Mary was heavily influenced by the WTB Pheonix and the OS Bikes Blackbuck too (and Mark Slate is making some more in a smaller size soon too)

Bon Tempes are really rare, a customer of mine had (and might still have) one. Really nice bit of kit.

Black Sheep – New Zeland horror spoof with killer zombie sheep…no really!

Nimrod height adjustable rack. £25ish in most places. Plenty of room for 2.55" 29er tyres :)

As for fitting kit Nimrod also make some nice P-Clips for the bottom of the seat stays (measure the diameter first as they come in lots of sizes) and they also make a mono-stay adaptor that clamps round the wishbone tube and gives 2 mounting points for the upper rack fittings.

Williams Cycles in Cheltenham should have all the bits. Give them a ring on 01242 252 246 and ask for Giles and say Alex sent you.

Regular seat bag to suit CaneCreek ST post :) Still @14-16L capacity so about the same as the Alpkit dry bag I have been using.

    Stu,

You can have a look at mine when it arrives in a couple of weeks :) I have a seat bag on order too :)

Current set up is sleeping bag, bivvi bag and tarp (mil poncho and paracord) in an Alpkit dry bag strapped to the handlebars.

Sleeping mat deflated, folded lenghtways and stuffed in to dry bag and allowed to "unroll" so I can stuff cooking kit and clothes in the middle. Then strap to rear rack.

I have a frame bag for tools, tubes and "on the fly" stuff but a camelbak would cover this too.

Argos in Bristol don't do powder coating, only ennamel. And having used them personally and professionally I would not reccomend them for MTBs as they seem to chip pretty fast unless you cover the frame in Heli Tape.

Bournes and Sweeny+Sherlock in Birmingham are pretty good with S+S being a little better and have a wider range of colours and things like glitter topcoats. £30-70ish

Spesh is made by Giant, does it make it rubbish?

Yes that is rubbish as Speccy's are made by Marida.

Had an interesting debate with a chap at work who was spouting that an XACD Ti frame from the far east at $700 (shipped!) was just as good as the "rip off" Litespeeds and Lynskeys that they also built…He was put right in short order and a quick run down of the stages of Ti production so he and the others know where the difference in cost and quality came in.

For me a Ti frame is about long life, nice ride and no rust. Weld integrity (from proper prep, cleaning and welding processes that all take time and money) So the cosmetic finish is an after thought and if I can save some £££ because its not polished / hand waxed / decal'd thats fine.

Wish I had not just got a work bonus as the OO Ti29er deal is crazy!

I have some great knives from Nippon Kitchen. A chef's knife and a Usuba in damascas steel and a small veg knife in "regular" steel. A water wheel sharpener keeps them sharp but a steel and diamond file are slightly better if a little tricky to use.

Some excellent quoted on R4 this morning from the religious front about the sabbath being for rest etc… all "backed up" by quotes from the Old Testament (which is the book of the jews and they take Saturday off…go figure)

I am pretty sure these people don't follow a lot of the other stuff in the OT as it is outmoded and wrong (stoning blasphemers, banishing women on the blob, incest, not eating shellfish….)

Stick to the "rules" in the whole of the book or make up your own and have the guts to chart your own moral course. Which ever you choose please don't think that you can impose it on others (this goes for secularists too…)

Salsa Bell Lap Moto Ace – 46cm. Short and shallow with a little flare for out the saddle honking.

Midge bars are great but only in the drops, riding the hoods / tops is not as nice as the Salsa.

SSP you've been on this forum long enough to know that, anyone seeking advise concerning a religious service or a minority ethic community's customs, risks getting stick from those who are completely intolerant of other people's beliefs and lifestyles.

Its only been this consitantly bad since the Xmas killing of the old forum. Sure the previous years it had its bad patches but it always returned to mainly bikes / helpful stuff and the odd "its all kicking off" thread.

I remember GoFar and 9Feet.com now I am old!

Wow this thread is just like the forum in minature. Starts with a question which draws a few helpful replies then is descends in to 2 or 3 idiots arguing off at a tangent and looking for all the world like they have internet-touretts as well as their heads up their bottoms.

I really wonder why I bother checking here.

And yes I am getting old (and I'm not a big drinker!) although the men and women could sit at the same tables at the reception.

You can have it nickle plated which is tougher but does chip and can't be touched up.

You could get it copper plated (one of the stages in Chrome plating) and either leave it to weather or lacquer over. Not cheap and can mess up the threads in BB / bottle cage / seatpost fit.

Powder coating is cheap, tough, easy to touch up and enviromentally friendly compared to the other options. Have a look in the yellow pages or if you are near B'ham Bournes in Digbeth or Sweeny and Sherlock near the footy stadium.

and in my ever-so-humble opinion are a weaker option

Any proof of their lack of strength or is it pure unfounded opinion?

Retro-fitting an EBB is indeed a PITA and would be pretty costly. I know there is an EBB HT2 bottom bracket avaialble from singlespeed.nl (IIRC) that along with a half link / choice of ratio would do the job. Or a White Ind ENO rear hub and freewheel…

As well as punk / metal I also like:

Bee and FLower – dark, moody and bluesey female vocals.

Final / Stars of the Lid – minimal ambient soundscapes.

Godspeed! You Black Emperor / Explosions in the Sky / Sigur Ros / Pelican / Codes in the Clouds – post-rock.

Steve Von Till – pared down folk (Steve also sings / plays guitar in Neurosis)

Black buff was great in the end. Lots of the other people had not brought anything but there were plenty of scaves to borrow. Proceedings were delayed a little but there was chai and samosas to keep us busy.

Service was interesting and pretty loud and I didn't quite know what was happening but it was a relaxed atmosphere and much more fun than the normal CoE dirge!. The reception was also pretty loud with lots of great food and wall-to-wall booze! Ended up leaving a little early as the music was so loud the drinks were moving across the table!

Bivvies are faster to deploy / pack up, most probably lighter and give a nice view of the sky. If they are "better" is down to the user and the use.

My bag is a custom one from Jeff @ Carousel Design Works, and I have a handlebar system and seat bag on order from Eric at Epic Designs Alaska. That lot and a Camelbak Octane 8 I can carry more than enough for long term trips with "civilsation" clothes as well as a spare set of cycling clothing.

We were discussing where this could go at work today. Luke puts money on the Doctor turning up at about 9:30pm. Lizzi was thinking that something lame like an earth virus killing the alien…where have we seen that before?

I am gunning for GCU Only Slightly Bent with Skeffen-Amtiskaw and Diziet Sma on board turning up with some real sci-fi weapons :)

    Unlikely but you never know.

I have the Ricoh GRD and love it to bits. Great quality, lost of settings and very easy to use with SLR-a-like finger and thumb wheels.

All photos for my article in issue 41 on the MTB Himachal race were taken with the GRD and I only got through 1 and a half batteries in 2weeks of shooting.

The newer GRD II has faster RAW write times and can shoot up to 12 frames before writing (3sec vs the old 12sec time!) and some extra features.

The new CX1 is amazing to look at in the flesh with a very sharp bright screen and a CMOS sensor…might have to get one as an every day camera!

    Basha = tarp?

If so yes with a poncho / tarp from the local army surplus store (MASH in Gloucester) About £17 IIRC plus some paracord and tent pegs = 500g and big enough to get 2 people under it (with legs sticking out as we had bivvi bags!) or one person in luxury.

Free rolling of a 29er without the effort to spin it up to speed.

Only if you wheelie everywhere (assuming the 29er is on the front) as while the front wheel is not driven it is accelerated when the rest og the bike it.

29er extra effort to accelerate is negligable (I have little enough power as it is so I would notice) and they carry speed through corners better than 26″ wheels…and yes they can fit round switchbacks…its a 3″ bigger tyre not a tandem with BOB trailer!
