    Another Charnwood user here.

Bought stove for £800 and spent £600 on materials for fitting.

The problem with asking others on quotes its a completely rough figure as houses vary so much. It would be worth while asking a few people who possibly live on the same street as you/have same build of house what they have done.

The more adjustable a stove is the better. Some cheaper stoves have pretty much an on/off in terms of air flow and struggle to keep the fire in overnight/longer periods or burn fuel at a rapid rate.

Also add into your cost log storage. The more you can store for longer and dryer the easier and cheaper it will be to run the stove. Or if your looking at coal, look at what other options you coal supplier offers, I’m currently using what our chap refers to as “Marbles” through the night to keep the warmth in and they are doing an excellent job.

Possibly Singlespeed_Shep, though some identify themselves as “cyclists”:

I suppose like the guy who made the “York Cyclists” video.

    They aren’t the same ratio.

    On a 26″ wheeled bike

    32-36 is 23.1″
    36-32 is 29.3″

so 32-36 will be easier to pedal

I see Evans and CTC have picked it up on FaceBook

Sadly some of the comments on there are worse than the ones on the article.

Weird – I sort of expected that someone who had Liked one of those organisations might have some sympathy with the cyclists…

Its very likely that the people who like the page are cyclists and when they comment/like a post its shared with their friends who may not be so sympathetic.

Have a look at your bearings, it should have a number on the rubber seal.

Put that number into google/ebay and you’ll be able to get a hold of some pretty quick.

EDIT: Oh, and if, like me, you pay the seven quid to park at the start, it may compound the feelings. I think most locals ride in from free parking somewhere else.

The singletrack issue with eds bikes showed a good spot to park.

Otherwise £7 isn’t much for a car load.

I ride there a fair bit, Tend to go off exploring as there are lots of excellent natural trails.

If i do the red route I find it a better ride if I start at dixons hollow and do a full loop from there. This way means the main ups and downs are half way instead of at the end.

It is a full loop and there is also a black loop also thats pretty short and worth doing a lap off (At Dixons Hollow)

Its in pretty good condition at the moment and has had a fair bit maintenance done recently.

I feel sorry for people who find riding bikes in the woods boring.

I didn’t watch the whole film as it was getting a bit dull and repetitive.

    Yep, its a bit ****

Most of the riders seemed to be taking advantage of that brief pause when both lights are at red. The bit where there should be a separate filter light for bikes.

Yes more needs to be done on that, especially on the traffic lights away from the gates.

Here is one of the gates that works well: Monk Bar.

    Link

Cyclists are able to advance past the red light through the hole on the left and be head of the traffic and away from incoming traffic. Other gates have this option and it makes a huge difference.

The junction early on where people jump the lights to go round a sharp right hander is a nightmare. The Lights are set a distance round the corner so it takes traffic a while to get to the corner. When they do and are turning left they will be heading head on with anyone who has jumped the lights, Again down to the narrow old streets.

The majority of the newer junctions in York (Foss Islands area) is a nightmare (built in the late 90’s) and does really put you in some awful positions with muliple lanes and faster traffic. Its a shame his video didn’t show this area at all and highlight the seriously troublesome areas of York.

In my experience the area of York within the walls is a very pleasant place to ride open plan, no traffic and plenty of bike parking. There are also plenty of riverside bike paths to the center and it all has a nice feel about it (except when its rammed with shoppers). This guy filming the video is the only person I have ever know to have any issues.

Most of them seem to be improvising to compensate for badly designed road systems and traffic light phasing. Nothing wrong with that.

Considering at least half the road systems where built 100’s of years ago there’s not much you can do other than alternate the flow of traffic through a small gap. Jumping the red in many of the points in York puts you in a situation where you are trying to fit through a gap not much wider than car with a vehicle coming the other way.

There are plenty of filtering systems in place where cyclists either go to the left of a set of lights or like Monk bar have their own traffic lights.

I’ve ridden in a fair few cities in the UK and York has probably the best facilities shame this video does really show it.

Ordered 700c tyres for the weekend. Got 26″ :(

Sat on hold a few times and sent an email only to miss deadline for todays orderers to buy another set for next delivery.

The majority of the one way streets in the video are in York’s pedestrian zone. So depending on the time neither of them should be there.

York has got pretty good facilities for cycling, not perfect though including a few cycle filters to avoid traffic lights (cycle lanes to the left of the lights to avoid the junctions)

The main problems lies with the city walls. Alot of the gates only allow 1 direction of traffic at a time so at these points the traffic lights make sense. freedom of movement for cyclists and pedestrians would be excellent in the city walls, but with the volume of people there on a weekend down narrow streets makes cycling through useless you might as well get off and walk.

Really good chainsets, If they are going to see a lot of use, then maybe try and find a set with 4 arm chainrings. A bit easier to find.

Bike shops also pay a premium for 0% finance.

I’ve seen a few that operate a similar no or little discount policy on Finance and Cyclescheme.

If you can get over to Osmotherly there are some good simple routes routes from cod beck/sheep wash. Following the cleveland way with a few trails off each way.

Its also a realyl nice place to go with the family.

Shimano as above for their innovation.

Sram/Rockshox group are good but their innovations just don’t hit the masses like shimano have.

Specialized no one will come close in terms of building influential main stream bikes. Rockhopper, Stumpjumper, Enduro etc

Unless you are desperate for he cash, keep it.

It is a lovely bike and one that will last forever esp if its got a rohloff. Maybe in 20 years your riding will change and your old mans bike will be the perfect ride to use.

Wolfenstein if in doubt, get your accountant/accounts people to have a look at it at work. they should be able to give you the exact figures for yourself based on what agreement you’ll have between them and also your salary.

Everything else from us all on here is variable.

    Singlespeed_Shep

Sorry should have said it can vary person to person and also what ever the agreement is at the end of the process. As far as my boss and I are aware we won’t we paying anything at the end of the scheme. (We are the only 2 on it currently)

But as it stands the calculator on the website is only a couple of pence out from the agreement I have here.

More and more staff here are looking at it and the accounts team are looking at what other options are available.

that frame is well expensive – is it £1100 with a fork?

It is a handmade in the UK frame with a high end carbon fork. Pretty realistic price IMHO

So, in a £1000 bicycle … How much do i really pay at the end of the day ? (End of contract)

    I would be paying £665 for a £1k bike. over 12 months.

    I’ve also checked my agreement:

Under 4.0 Salary Sacrifice and Hire Period

“At the end of the hire period, the owner of the equipment will contact you to disscuss what is to happen next.”

Isn’t this the employer? I just asked my boss if I had to pay anything at the end of the scheme and got a “Nope”.

They do nothing to help retailers directly, except I’m sure that big entities such as Evans can negotiate a discount. It all gets ploughed back into pushing the scheme to more businesses, and nothing to promote the retailers that support them.

I worked in a few LBS and Evans during the first few years of the scheme.

The introduction of the scheme increased sales of bikes. Maybe not a great to the enthusiasts but certainly to the masses. I can’t see many retailers wanting to ditch the scheme unless they are wanting to move into another market.

From memory the ones that tighten up are 30mm M5 and the long one for tension is a long M3.

But its a long time since i had mine. Measure one and look on ebay or like above try a shop.

Not convinced a chain tug would work.

I saved money using it over walking in and buying it. Only half way through at the mo.

If you don’t like it don’t use it, simples. I hope its still about for my next bike.

    I have a defy 2,

Use it as a winter bike. Its really good.

I would prefer to run bigger tyres. 23c is the biggest i can squeeze in mine.

The defy specific guards where good, but my rear gave up after a few months so I went with SKS Long Boards.

To the LBS workers, how many customers do you get at various times of the day/week?

One of the shops I worked in we used to be really busy Thursday late nights and sat. Odd old boys during the week, maybe a lunch time rush and a few people with days off.

I used to also work at Evans in York which was open 9:30-8pm We where really busy on an evening, I did make sense for us especially to be open that late.

Good Business Should be supported not Local business.

The three biggest retailers in the uk Wiggle, CRC and Evans all started as local bike shops. They looked at how the market was changing and adapted.

Round near me plenty of shops open and close with 6-12months. But the ones that stay are ones that offer a good range of products, order parts in when people need them, have a website and above all are realistic and honest with their customers.

Genesis IO Frames can be picked up cheaply if you shop around.

Or like above DMR, You should be able to pick up a Trailstar cheap and get it powdercoated.
