A road ride for me is getting a way from it all, riding into the middle of nowhere. I’ll see more people at a trail centre than a road ride through the local villages.

I may be weird but I quite like just riding a bike somewhere.

Yeah I did, straight after the ride after the photo was taken and went for shallower drops and 28’s,

The parts where taken from a very racey giant TCR advanced

What BB are you using? I had problems with hope and crank brothers,

Shimano and royce have been fine.

(it has brooks saddle and tape with a campy groupset now)

Yeah you can fit fat tyres to it, Fattys Fit Fine and all that.

You need a seat post adaptors for a rack, it has eyelets at the dropouts for mudguards but nothing on the seat stays.

Absolutly love the bike, Very stable at speed, nice position for climbing and very comfortable.

I do 50-80 miles group rides at a steady pace (15-17mph) and its perfect.

may help, but I have a 58cm Surly pacer and i’m the same height and inside leg as you.

I run it with a 100mm stem and straight post.

I tried a cross check the same size and was very tempted to get a 58cm in that too.

It always amazes me on here that a guy can ask advice on anything (in this case shoes) and he instantly gets told he should learn to ride differently by some Forum Whore riding god. 🙄

But on topic, I have a pair of Nike 6.0’s they dry out quick and offer plenty of grip. I use them with seal skin or Craft warm socks. I’m seriously considering a pair of the Vans Gravels though. A guy at our local bmx track had some on and he really rated them.

I generally just clean grips and saddle, hose everything else off.

But if stuff brakes or wears out quickly, I only blame myself.

On one are the best for a value 700c fork, but would be worth looking for a know p2 or salsa fork

Yeah no way I’m cancelling the case. I sent the case to customer services and the will have an outcome in 48hrs.

Still on going. Some people are a pain in the ar5e. Seller is telling me to cancel the ebay case and then he will give me my money back.

The bike is back on ebay. I’m just waiting for response from ebay customer services.

Think I’ll have to name and shame on here soon.

I have a Muddy Fox in my shed that I use for nipping around on. IIRC it cost in its day the equivalent of a 2012 Genesis Core 26.1

Muddy Fox is rigid with cantis, threaded headset
Genesis has 27 gears, aheadset, hydro brakes and a lockout sus fork

I know what i’d rather have if nostalgia wasn’t involved.

People get hung up on having XT now because its what they have a few years ago. I personally think modern Deore is a lot better than the XT of a few years ago.

giving you almost none of the advantages of either SS or gears, yay!!

2 speed pace, (not mine) and i’ve seen an Two speed orange with a hammerschmidt. And i know a chap who has a dead flat commute apart from a 20% climb so runs a pompino with a 50/34 up front and a 17t cog at the rear.

I never said it was a good idea. Just possible and works for some people. like those that run 3 speed 😉

you won’t find anything above XT equivalent anymore” – I don’t know what this means, please do explain.

Only the cheaper shimano and cheap sram comes in 8 speed

    Pace RC129 29er – single speed 29er
Surly Pacer – Single speed road bike
Muddy Fox Courier – Retro Pub Bike

For what I want this is a prefect quiver.

    As the name says.

Ditched gears when I had no money. Never looked back,

If you try to ride a single speed like a geared bike you’ll hate it. If you have an open mind try different things till it works then it will work for you regardless of where or what style you do.

You could run single cog at the rear and a double at the front to get you up the hills if needed, for a lightweight simple bike.

I’d love to see you riding a goat trail or sheep trail for any distance, assuming you can find one. Most of what people refer to on here as natural trails are either bridleways, footpaths, or the remnants of motorcycle enduros or similar

I can see both sides to this point, Both sides are technicality. There are plenty of sections of single track have only been touched by man through use, Like riding/walking/herding livestock. These that have had no tools to construct them. I’d class these as natural trails.

I swapped a house mates (house mate a) moisturiser for mayonnaise. Another house mate (house mate b) pissed on said house mate (house mate A) when both where hammered. I also cut half way through the shafts of house mate a’s golf clubs so they would snap during a swing (they did).

House mate A thought all of above was house mate B so when house mate b was passed out he pulled the lads boxers down put a condom on a broom handle and poked it between the lads cheeks and took a photo. Not many people didn’t see the photo.

Certainly a £500 laptop should last more than a couple of years.

If properly maintained. I know plenty of people that have destroyed laptops in less than two years use for hammering games and the net with no maintenance and virus protection.

If it gets to the point of small claims court, Look into how much a repair centre would charge. If they can fix it for you for small sum in relation to the hassle of small claims court then i’d seriously consider it.

Singlespeed shep, as links above, there’s even two versions of BB91 on offer – 41A and 42A. And I’m afraid the eccentric BB is not really what I’m after, that’s for adjusting chain tension on a single speed.

Yep am aware of what it is “for” but if it fits your frame it would enable you to use a conventional BB. Where there are more options at different price points that are also easier to fit and remove.

It would also give you the opportunity to change the BB height on your frame.

It’s lovely in a ‘it’s still Yorkshire, so lock the car doors and get out of there as soon as possible’ way

Darling, Please don’t mix up South and West Yorkshire with North Yorkshire.

    Ilkley, as in Yorkshire?
‘middle class’ and ‘Yorkshire’ are surely mutually exclusive.

    Exactly,

I was discussing this at ones Polo club a week last friday, I think we need to put a cap on the lower “middle class” and god forbid the the “working class” moving into North Yorkshire.

I already employ a few to clean ones stables, what else can they do??

My dad has a 2012 defy and we put a Shimano BB91 BB in it that I had in the parts bin from my old lapierre.

    They are unfortunetly Sh!te BB’s

Rigids where back on in 10 mins.

So you are telling me, the piss take price of £8.50 to park there, doesn’t actually go towards maintaining and building trails?

I hate the place even more now.

As a lot of mountain bikers go there to ride, and not just parents with kids, why not make some decent trails and grade them accordingly? At least then it might be worth paying the parking charge, which is f*cking criminal.

I seriously don’t get it when people kick off about parking/toll road charges for FC/similar forests. You pay that price to use the forest and all the facilities there not just the trails themselves. Like the play area, cafe, visitors centre, staff’s wages etc.

Dalby for example gets more people walking and using the visitors centre than it does the mtb. SO makes sense that more of the money would be spent on those areas with a smaller portion going on the trails. I have a £40 season pass and feel its good value for a years worth of use of the forest.

There are plenty of places to ride for free in the UK that are more fun than trail centres and chances are you’ll drive past them to get to a trail centre, 90% of mtbers are too lazy to go exploring and prefer to follow a line.

I spend time building the bike and looking at the angles/positions and if its not right straight away i tend to just get used to it, (until I decide its not for me and sell the bike) 😆

Could some one please tell me WTF is the point in having a single speed with gears? Surely you are just in denial and should go back to a proper bike?

Not a single speed if it has gears.
