A teacher in a position of responsibility brings a dog into school to five year old children. It attacks one of them so badly that the child has to be taken to the specialist plastic surgery hospital to get treatment. And the parents were not asked for their consent. I think it’s appalling.

    +1

Can they actually do plastic surgery without asking the parents?

I wish someone had posted the proper map and I wouldn’t have had to write this!

Your not able to post a map?

I hadn’t realised it was different to the singletrack one from a few months back. Just the first that came up in google.

edit: issue 81, which is what I followed (again prob not the right one for these lot, but I had a great time) takes you over a little bridge at watendlath up a tough climb and then down a great descent.

I think I only put two in mine so there is a tiny bit of clearance between the cup and the cap. 1 would have had the cap fouling the cup and 3 would be too much of a gap.

When you’ve ridden up that “road” you’ll be grateful its tarmac.

most of the road sections are single lane dead quiet.

    I just printed this out:

    Link

there are a couple of permissive footpaths, just in case you get confused when your following the route and come across a couple of footpath signs and walkers.

You can – trust me , and it doesnt hurt.

Sorry don’t believe you for a second, unless your only running from one end to the other of a muddy football pitch.

Obvioulsy not, but the theory is that they reduce certain injuries a lot, if you use them all the time and adapt

Compared to a flat cushioned shoe?

Using the same technique in a Vibram Fivefingers Speed 4mm Sole Vs a Saucony Virrata 12mm cushioned sole IIRC. The Saucony would be better for you, it may lack feel which is a separate argument but the extra forgiveness will help a great deal. by 2015 all the major manufactures will have ditched barefoot. (except barefoot only brands)

Let the tyre down, leaving it on the rim, wiggle it about left to right, then pump it back up. Sounds like it isn’t seated 100% all the way round.

Out of interest who runs barefoot heal?

probably 95% of the new runners picking up vibrams, minimus vivo etc, believing its the shoes that make the difference.

It is a marketing gimmick and that 2:37 time really makes my point

To an extent I agree, its his technique that has improved. Had he run the same in a racing flats he probably would have knocked a few seconds off that time.

In terms of shoes, ones with 4mm ish thick sole are barefoot/minimal. A lot of racing flats or shoes branded as “natural” running shoes have more than that.

The fact that he became injury free after switching is much more significant

    Barefoot shoes DON’T prevent injury.

We recently interviewed Ultra Marathoner and barefoot runner, Patrick Sweeney, who, in what may be the fastest marathon ever run in Vibram Five Fingers, recorded an awesome time of 2:37:14 winning the Palos Verdes Marathon. He ran in Vibram Five Fingers Sprints

Which is excellent for him, but irrelevant in giving advice to a beginner in what shoes to buy.

If you can’t forefoot strike in regular shoes, don’t bother with barefoot yet.

Look at a shoe like Saucony’s Virrata/kinvara or a natural Range from Asics.

They offer cushioning with little or no heel to toe drop. So you’ll be running without a built up heel, but still have the forgiveness of a cushioned shoe. Once you can handle the technique in those then look at barefoot. You’ll need to build your technique and fitness before switching to barefoot. It’ll be worth it in the long run. There’s no quick fix.

There’s a reason shoes like Vibram, minimus, hattori etc come with big health warnings in the box.

I don’t know what’s worse, knowing we pay for these governments, (this one and the previous ones) or paying for the BBC to follow them, take photos of what they are eating and spend time writing about it.

I think this is what a lot of people will do, Its even hard to sell a second hand bike lately, it will all have a knock on effect and might even back fire on the industry!

I think you’ve posted this by accident with your trolling account. 😳

    It makes sense.

    True singlespeed very true.

When ever I got a tool in, I used to stick roam on the dvd player, sit on a downhill bike and make funny noises.

    Or throw a spanner.

I miss the days of “my chains rusty, this bike keeps getting punctures and do you have a medium sized Allen key for my bars”

Working in a bike shop can be really depressing, the shit people try to pull is unreal.

Its life, You take the rough with the smooth. Its not the customers fault you just had a tool in complaining.

Each one of those people you complain about at some point made a contribution to your wages.

yes, I had one and loved it. (Defy 1) I found it a really comfy ride.

Mudguards where a pain in the arse, the defy ones fit easily but on mine 2011 model I could only fit 23c tyres without rubbing. I gave the bike to my old man who now loves it.

I replaced it with a surly pacer with nicer kit and would happily go back to the defy.

Have you tried your local Evans store? they’ll have a good range of brands and some good advice on sizing, fitting.
