I’ve always stuck with a 18 on my 29er, apart from when its really wet i sometimes go to 19.

I’ve used one of the superstar ones and for £8 it was fine, But doesn’t last anywhere near as long as surly’s which I stick with now.

If your trying ratio’s buy a few cheap ones, 17,18,19 etc from tarty bikes, they start at about £3-£4. If your running a shimano or similar hub a narrow cog will be fine,

I ride bikes. I change things when the original breaks/wears out doesn’t look as pretty as something in the shop

I’ve used RNR Powdercoating, West Tanfield just north of Ripon.

It was a simple frame so didn’t need much work but they did a good solid job for £30

If you use electrical tape/yellow tape as rim tape with a bit of talc powder, it helps the tyre slide on easier.

Also make sure the first bead you put on in in the center of the rim.

    edit: beaten to it.

    Mbuk, 😆

The majority of mtb mags now are filled with lazy journalism, I was gutted when I realized my STW subscription was had gone via direct debit before I could cancel.

Gaz was on the Tv show about cyclists a while back,

Guess he’s now trying promote a positive image for cyclists by “outing” silly cyclists.

Lost track of how many errors there where in the “london cycling” video on the youtube link.

Could you get a different set of wheels from the LBS?

Did a road ride with a fixie rider Saturday and what a pain in the wotsit… he never stopped evangelising about singlespeed and rubbishing our compacts.

It was probably to drown out the irritating clunking and clicking of poorly maintained drive trains.

    😆

200 for a 3yr olds bike IS a rip off.

Depends on how long it lasts for and if a 3 year old can take it apart.

I’ve heard of plenty of adults who spend £500+ on bikes only to keep taking it apart to swap frames.

I tried that one first, it didn’t work so went with groundhog day, both are pretty worn out on helmet threads i guess.

what use are you to your child if you get knocked off your bike, have a head injury and so leave your child to care for you for the rest of your life.

I think the point he’s making is that if you believe in the safety gear then use it yourself, “rather than when your older you won’t need one”

Do you also have the same issue with people driving cars without helmets whilst their kids are strapped into a seat which protects them?

The adult should wear a seatbelt also.

No I don’t get it either. I don’t get where anybody is suggesting that. What some people including me are suggesting is that resources are better spent on improving driverRoad User behaviour than cyclist behaviour as that’s where the road safety benefits are to be made – that’s not exactly the same thing is it?

More education needs to be given to everyone who uses the road.

A lot of people suggesting they are “not needed”.

Not really an argument when your riding a flash bike. You don’t need all the bells and whistles but its nice to have em.

personally I wont be fussed what brakes my next road bike has, which ever is the best ride and all round package.

    I’ve done two ways,

One complete custom build with handmade frame, paid deposit of 30% then rest when I collected

Other I paid in full for Santa Cruz Custom build, Pretty sure that only took a few weeks to arrive.

Didn’t have a problem with either as i would only spend that sort of money in a shop I trusted.

As soon as the parts are fitted to the frame they loose value so the shop would want a good commitment from you.

It’ll make a load of noise and trash your tyres esp if they are soft compound.

I have an old goosed wheel that I stick in my frame for turbo usage. It had a normal slick on but now have a proper tyre. (not noticed any difference between them)

Wheel size does not by itself determine a good or bad bike.

    So wheel size doesn’t matter?

A good bike is a good bike, The wheel size is irrelevant to this. You get good and crap bikes in all wheel sizes.

Nikolai are not going to compromise a bike for the sake of it.

    So wheel size does matter?

Yes, they feel 650b is an improvement over 26″ and they can build a great bike with this platform so are running with it,

    So… err… why the changeover?

    Because they can.

Give Yellow a call, always easier over the phone. I have Rudy’s and previously worked in shops that sell them and didn’t know they did that deal.

    Let it go,

Can’t judge its dodgy because of his dress sense.

Also to be fair a zesty is pretty chavvy anyway. 😉

Matt built me a stunning set of pauls hubs on H-plus son rims, still going strong.

Other Matt also made me a frame, that’s awesome too.

if the forks look like they may be a little short for the 650b frame go for chris king headset or another one that does a “tall” crown race. It’ll add 5mm or so to the axle to crown length.

I’ve scene and ridden many 650b conversions but only 26″ frame and forks, I had a go on a carver once that was a 650b frame but I’m pretty sure it was designed round a 26″ fork as no one did 650b forks then.

28.5lbs? Sounds very heavy for what it is.

The Brooks, dropper and rohloff with be at least 15lb’s of that 😆

Nice bike, big fan of swingers here too.

Two and a half hours!! If it’s worth it to her then it’s money well spent but it sounds to me like someone creating a “problem” she never knew existed and then stretching out the length of time it takes to fix it in order to justify it.

    Depends on a few things:

    1. does this include picking the bike and having it built
    2. it was free anyway
    3. how big her tits are and how low the stem can go

I’ve seen plenty of people on a bikes in terrible positions, but it feels right for them because they are used to it.

Its only when an injury comes along that they start to look into it more.

Stem spacers are a prime example, so many more people could benefit from higher bars but aesthetics and fashion dictate otherwise.

Spa cycles would be worth giving a call for rims and advice, they are really good wheel builders and stock alsorts of rims for good prices.

It may not be from a brand you’ve heard of but the quality will be good.

I’ve had some wheels built from them with rigida and exal.be rims that have been excellent.

unless your new rims are the exact same size you’ll need new spokes too,

The shimano wheels are a no go.

I’ve used Mavic Open Pro rims and they have been excellent.

But if you go for a wheelset the halo aerorage ones are pretty good, you may get a bit of cash selling your current wheels to some hipsters.

We’re looking at the Mama’s and Papa’s Sola, looks like it will fit the bill for us.

The Mama’s and Papa’s factory outlet is well worth a look, display models start at arround £130 with a warranty. We are just looking out for one we like to turn up there and we’ll buy it.

I was at glentress a couple of weeks a go and I was really impressed with how they have adjusted their trails to force riders into bigger wheels, simply by adding rocks and steps on the climbs.

On the climb to the freeride area I was amazed at how many retro bikers there where stood like lemmings trying to figure out how to ride over them. It was only when I rode straight over them on my 29er they realised it was all about the angle of attack.

There was a couple of trail builders at the top and as I complimented them about the well maintained trails they showed me the 650b specific dirt they have imported for the upcoming enduro. It was so soft to touch, smelt funny though but anything with a small comtact area just can’t bite into it.

The downhill sections from spooky woods haven’t been modified yet so unfortunately I had to walk down most of it in case my wheels left the ground and exploded, or it got too steep and techy for a 29er’er
