just to update. tire arrived saturday. went on fairly easy as others have said.
a bit less vlume than the Nobby Nic 2.6 it replaced.

bead-to-bead pulled flat measured less, so that would explain it. it was 156 or something vs 168 on the NN

once inflated, outer ‘nob-to-nob’ width was 68mm, carcass 66.5mm

on balance i think i prefer the nobby nic as it feels lighter somehow, tho was perhaps a bit too light for my trails, and the grip a little more consistent. the michlin feels more solid. the rubber nice and sticky, but at the same time doesn’t feel it’ll wear down too quick.
centre nobs are quite wee compared to edge ones, of which there are lots and they are chunky.

all in all well worht the money, and i’m nto sure i could tell the difference between the performance and the competiotion if i had one tbh.
this seems to be how much tyres SHOULD cost…

i’ll not be wanting a new one then. it’s 130mm travel i want at the back.

why do they often sneak up the travel? not all brands do it but bigger ones seem to often.
i guess its like car models getting bigger and new ones sneaking in the bottom

fair play. not sure i could handle that!
always good to be just a little out-biked : )

    thanks exsee.
might’ve been the mrp i was reading a review of sayign a bit more average rider friendly tune/feel than the helms…?

shame yours is a 19″ hob nob or i could offer to take it off you!

thanks folks. sounds all good. tho i may not ‘smash’ (as if i samsh down anything!) down some bits as quick/comfortably, it’ll be optimum for 80% of my local trails, and be perfectly alright for the rest.

i’d be looking at frame only probably, as i’m a serial tinkerer/skinflint bike updater.

ready, i have thought about the 2016 remedy 29, as they are apparently pretty similar, with 140 instead of 130mm travel. but seems too similar to my YTwicked – would be just a teeny bit more bike than i need. and i want to go as light/pedalable as possible without sacraficing too much capability. fuel ex seems optimum. plenty of other newer things such as SB130s, but out of my price range.

ok, now i just need to sell a fat bike to fund the new frame! anyone want a calibre dune with a bluto? : )

miles off, i’m small and light and not a radge.

but it’s gets me through some pretty chunky stuff pretty nicely. i guees i’d trade a bit of that tho for better climbing, lighter weight, lower standover (my current is a 26er fram running 27.5+ wheels, and with 150mm rear travel. the cross bar is more road bike height…)

i ordered a perfomance wild am 2.6 in the end
nice and cheap, could afford a litre of sealant too for the price of a DHR
can report back on final dimensions once it’s on if anyone’s interested.

tho i may try to squeeze the last life force out of my nobby nic first

    righto thanks a lot woody.
so on my excessively wide rims (scraper 45s) the 2.6 might come up good as 2.6

so hould i take performance or competition. was ready to shell out for a noby nic, so competition price is acceptable, but temted just ot give perfomance a go, given the price

    thanks woody2000

any chance you could have a measure of the 2.8″
outer lug to outer lug diameter for me? in mm?

it’s for the back and i like to cram in as big a tire as i can : )

lovely job thanks. so they come up a bit small?
did you get the performance or the competition ones?

good on you jlln. yep doing things ‘ghetto’ is definately super satisfying.
i also spend far to much time on youtube : )

dou you not feel the rod in your tyre then? cos 50mm dia is quite a tall profile.
or have you just got used to it?

    single07

yes you need an fs. how old are you? over 40 you merit it!

    just so much less knackering

    single07

    right, that’s what it is.
weird that i’ve never used it. i guess i just usually make stuff fit well enough not to need it : )
does it really last in the tyres tho?

ah thank you cheifgrooveguru! i’ve remembered what’s happening now with my pressures!
    I DON’T run the rear at 0.9.

it’s in fact that my pump measures 0.2 bar under the ‘actual’ pressure, at least according to 2 other pumps which both agreed and which i trust more, and an old fashioned tyre guage.

so i’m actually running more liek 1 bar front and 1.1 rear =16psi. so perfectly reasonable.

i still want rim protection then!

off to research what backer rod actually is…

never had any burps on my 45mm rims. beads are VERY snug. and don’t really get squirm either. just below tat pressure i start to for sure. i don’t corner hard i guess.

i’m fairly sure i used to run the front at 1 bar and the back at 1.2
i should obviously re-habituate myself to that

    alright alright! : )

i mean to say, yes i could clearly have avoided some of the damage by upping the pressure a bit. but i’m on plus tyres for a reason!
the rimes are WTB scraper 45s

i don’t think so. in terms of grip and comfort on my trails it seems spot on, except for the occaisional dings on rough bits. i didn’t arrive at that pressure just randomly. it’s clearly at the limit and i do tend to go a little higher to be on the safe side, but this is the whole reason i’m looking at tyres inserts.

thanks hannah, i did go to The Website just after first post and found davids reviews.

yes heavier duty tyres would clearly help, but i didn’t get on with hans damphs and my idea is not to move to heavier tyres. i’m not a radge rider, and i’m doing ‘trail’ or all mountain riding. nobby nics sould be fine. there are just certain places where it suddenly gets a bit rough and inserts seem like the best option.

nobby nics 2.6 rear and 2.8 front.
    0.9 bar
not beefed up skeleton, but i’m weigh 65kg and don’t seem to have issues with sidewalls, unless you think tougher sidewalls would stop them flexing far enough to pinch?

think i’d be loking at an airnimal if i was you.
but they’re not 700c wheels, 24″ i think, and they’re not low end.

i think you cna get a joey for 800 quid tho.

i guess it won’t really do single track…

    oh yeh? could be good.

they’ve succeeded in getting it talked about anyway it seems. as this thread doesn’t illustrate!

does fully recyclable mean no plastic necessarily. obviously there are lasty of recyclale plastics, but it’s the polyester resin or whatever they use that is problematic in carbon fibre? or is it more mechanical; separating the carbon and the resin?

I’m deffy in the dry trails only bracket, luckily for me.
current frame (26er) fits 275×2.6 nobby nic in the back, so that’s already quite good, but wouldn’t be an option in mud i reckon

so phantom and prime, is that by sticking on the275 drop outs from spitfire etc?

damn, prime back on top of the list then

can i get was standard in scotland when i was a kid – 1980s.

while we’re on this sort of thing, anyone noticed on Android, the apostrophe-S for a plural has become standard suggestion. my logic is there must be more people using it wrongly that correctly, so some gooele algoritm somewhere has ‘decided that’s how it is.

i see red with this sort of stuff but have ot remind my self that language evolves. at least we don’t have to use declensions anymore, or hardly anyway..
