    Interesting thread we have here.

Evolutionary theory is itself evolving. Darwinian Evolution used to be taken as the only evolutionary mechanism, but there are other mechanisms of evolution that have been proposed over the years and are now being accepted as “fact”.

And secondly, there is of course the philosophy of science, again offering many different scientific paradigms. It seems that quantum mechanics is now only able to offer explanations of probability, and the more we study the very building blocks of life, the more they seem to be evading any form of sensible explanation. So we have moved from mechanical equations to mere theories of probability, that something might be here, that when we observe it, reality is changed, and that we never truely get to grips with it.

Goethe offered a science of qualities, but was wildly dismissed at the time. Science seems to just dismiss any ability to copy with qualities, and can only offer quantification of matter. Whether or nopt this bothers anyone depends on where you are on the scientific paradigms debate.

Of course, science also “proves” that before we perceive physical objects, we apply meaning to those objects, so the chances of ever being able to have a science where “facts” out there can be agreed up, independent of observers, well that’s a whole different discussion too.

And finally, quite a fun article in The Telegraph today on the perils of how science can be corrupted

I moved to London 1996 I think it was, when I was 26, and left when I was 33.

I personally would not move back again, as yeah, I would miss the countryside too much. I ended up in Leeds in 2005 and that city has a very vibrant night life, plenty to do, plus you can be in the countryside in minutes and north, south, east and west within an hour or so drive you have amazingness everywhere. Leeds is not the only city with a real mix like that obviously.

I see you have a job offer in London, and that may well change things, but yeah, just something to throw into the mix. Is it really London you are after, or would somewhere smaller be better for you? I have no idea, just something to think about really.

BTW – I was living in Hampton at the time if that is of any significance.

Why not be a tourist for the day where you live? I have been using up some holiday this week, and went into some caves, then into the war tunnels here.

Ji – yeah, the lighting is really yellow, and with a decent camera and a rider such as your good self the video would really be a whole differen t ball game. There really cannot be that many riders slower or more shonky down the steps, but hey, I’ve never claimed to be a riding god, I just enjoy getting out and about.

RD – I always wear those underpants on my head when out riding heh

You could organise a big stanes bike bash for sometime when you are home. Based at Graigshields outdoor centre in Ae it would be a good cheap weekend for people.

Trekster – looks like no one wants to meet me so the South West Scotland Super Stanes Big Bike Bash could end up “Simon Ralli’s Really Rather Quite Small Bike Bash” 🙂

I am off to the rain forests mid July so yeah, seems like the timing is good. See you early July!

Maybe it is a Gibraltar thing, especially as fresh cow’s milk is only sold in Morrisons, but yeah, you actually have to opt OUT of having squirty creame over here. It’s their default setting. I had been riding around Gib in the morning so don’t feel too guilty about it.

Yep – that link was posted after I posted.

Well I guess I was getting two people with names beginning with P mixed up. That’s a great little vid by Plumber for sure.

Pook – or you could just make the video yourself, and if doing one about descending get double fit hopping off the bike and running back up hill to the camera. Think of it as very healthy circuit/interval training.

So that was your vid then Pook? Which one was it? I didn’t see it on your Vimeo collection.

I did do the left to right shot half way through my vid, although I think i woke the people up who live in that house, as first my bike fell over, then my squaky brakes and shony step riding must have made them suspicious. You see their light go on just as I ride out of shot.

Heh – I think you will have to make your own video at night and see how it compares Pook. Can you tell i have too much spare time right now 🙂

    Oh Trimix – totally forgot!

yeah – I’d like to meet Trimix if only because the last time we met I looked not too dis-similar to this sexy chap back in the 80s 😀

Did you see my news? Am heading back to the Uk so we’ll have to catch up on a ride some time. I’ll be in Devon in September.

I am hoping to be able to spend a couple of weeks or so this June/July in Dumfries with my folks so am very much hoping Trekster is around to show me some of the riding places I don’t yet know about! And I’ll be keeping an eye out on who is planning to ride the Stanes at that time as well as it’s great meeting people off the forum, even when you do offer to show them your local trails and they end being far fitter and way more talented riders than you and end up blasting ahead of you, leaving you for dust heh 😀

Pook – sorry about that but yeah – have enjoyed your vids too. Liked the Stainburn one but then that used to be my local haunt (although didnt ride it that often as it was too hard – mainly rode Dalby).

Hi – just had a look through some of your vids (ncie tune on that one) but I don’t think it is there.

I think it was a singlespeed vi with canal footage, and some woods, and then some out-takes at the end with you running back up a hill to the camera.

Maybe it wasnt you or maybe I drempt it or something??

    Enfht

Yeah – Gibraltar is something like the third most safest country in the world. V little crime, and most of the crime here are locals drug smuggling. The government appear to be corrupt as heck mind but that’s another story.

It’s a bandana. It may not have looked it but there was quite a cold wind that night.

It wasn’t just me who lived through the acid house years was it? I mean how controversial can a mere bandana be?? 😀

The tune was “Summer’s Gone” by Zelijko Kerleta and is on my friend Russ Dubury’s Afro and Latin jazz compilation “Jazz Bizniz 2.”

Oh and I forgot to add I yearn for praise from Pook. He posted a chilled video a month or two back with some ground style camera angles. That’s when I thought I’d have a go with my Singletrack vid and this one. When I get praise from the great man Pook himself i know I shall have finally made it.

There were some other shots too I didn’t get as there was a gang of kids hanging around and they were expecting me to do all sorts of tricks and all. Quite embarrassing really when I can’t even wheelie heh.

I had to google FTW and came up with various variants. Am still not too sure if you liked the video or not.

    Nothing wrong with pirates 😀

    Buzz and Matt

Cheers. Matt – you can also add riding tracks more cheeky than a week’s riding with SFB. Rudeboy and his gang got a bit slated for riding on pavements, I seem to have escaped that. Other taboos – v shonky riding (although I left off one clip where I get some airtime as the shot was too dark, honest), jazz funk, Etnies and yeah, squeaky brakes, or basically braking in general where others would have just flown down heh.

    Mr Nutt

Hi – I don’t need a helmet as I had been watching Jedi’s videos prior to filming and didn’t crash once. Well, err – actually there are some embarrasing outtakes, which brings me to

    Steve

I live on the side of a very steep rock, and rather than roads in the Old Town there are also “ramps”. These are stepped roads that have concrete ramps for mopeds. Those “planks” are concrete, and can be incredibly steep (I had to reshoot a few things a few times :-)). I assume they are for prams and wheel barrows etc.

Muddy Fix – no – I am at one with the animal kingdom and I think I caught the dog post p.

    And finally 2unfit2ride

I am a man who has to suffer for his art. No one raised a statue to a critic. This isnt prentious w***, it is deeper than deep, you just need to go back and watch a number of times to begin to delve into the deeper meansing and symbols. To try and make it easier for you some people bought Spanish apartments and houses in Alcadeisa, just near me in 2004. Their deposits were from €50,000 to €70,000 and still not a single brick has been laid.

In Gibraltar, there is a major scandal as the government built apartments that only Gibraltarian people are allowed to buy still have not been completed and it will be months. The government made the purchasers take out mortgages months ago, and many are a few thousand out of pocket with no move in date in sight.

Does that make you feel better?

I have both map plus the book. I don’t think you’ll find anything better on-line than the offical national park map so it will definitely be best to try and buy that plus the Bikefax book for initial ideas of where to ride.

Just had a post mortem from Saturday night as I was out with work colleagues.

Kasper failed to go for his planned walk up the rock on Sunday.
Anna failed to leave Gibraltar on Sunday.

As for my singing here is what supposedly happened

Sang Run, but they only had the Leona Lewis version not Snowpatrol. There was a bit where the lyrics are just like “no no no no etc” but I was improvising something or other meaning people wanting to sing a long with me couldn’t do so.

Sang “Let Me Entertain You” but I was struggling to read at this point. I was mixing verses around and stuff but apparently got a standing ovation from everyone.

Sang a duet with Jai, Kasper’s GF. I have no idea what the song was but it apparently went ok.

And we were also out with a German dude Michael, Kasper’s friend. We found one German song with a German title, so put it on for him. It turned out to be an English language song with the occasional German lines. Apparently I went up, grabbed a second microphone, and even though I had no idea what the song was and had never heard it before, improvised the lyrics, made up a melody, and totally nailed it.

I do believe in the early hours it was all a bit too much, and I never got a chance to sing Chasing Cars, my final song of the night. The last time I sang it there there was a hen party of Navy women, and one went up and began trying to strip me and got my jeans around my ankles but I was holding on to my boxers for dear life. Turns out the hen was the cousin of a friend of mine on facebook, and she ended up tagging it which was all quite unfortunate really.

I love karaoke but when totally off on a mix of ale, lager, and tequilla sunrise it’s just awesome.

Yesterday however was a tad of a struggle.

In the US in the run up to the war with Iraq, peace protestors (and often highly visible spokes people in organisations such as Greenpeace) found their names on the US terrorists “watch list”. These people would get stopped at airports and would be unable to fly, meaning that they missed media appointments and other speaking engagements.

You could say I am reading too much into this, but that is one very obvious way the government can hinder people who are battling against what they perceive as injustices and wrongs.

The other thing that this could potentially be tied into is the electronic banking system that some people are predicting is going to be put into place should the current global banking system collapse. It will not just be an ID card you will need, but you will not be able to use cash anymore for transactions.

So yeah, the government will have ways not only to monitor us, but heavily restrict many people too by a variety of mechanisms.

There now follows two or three posts with references to tin foil hats……

Cheers for the pics. I didnt realise there was so much there now. Looks like it really makes for a great day out practicing and re-taking things. Yeah – well done the builders, especially as there is more for intermediate riders now as well as the MTB gods.

Yes – there are some trails and there are little bits of Northshore, but the problem is that the forestry work can sometimes wreck the trails.

DjGlover – yeah, there are some tough climbs but it makes for great interval training!

Ah right – I think the descent line was still being created when I last rode Stainburn. Thanks for the links. I would deffo roll that one too.
