We’ll all have bars and hubs and whatnot I guess.

Not tried Nate’s in anger yet (people keep buying them), but I took a ride around Hanchurch with an Endo rear/Larry front combination the other day. Now this has been fine on deep mud/churned up stuff so far, but in Hanchuch it was more a case of wet mud over hard ground. I was all over the place.
Be interesting to go back with a pair of Nates and show the ground who’s boss 🙂

We just had some Nate’s arrive. No Husker Du’s yet, but I can tell you they’re going to be £105!

Red Darryls just landed too 🙂

Same here[/url] and a scottish shop but I can’t remember which one 🙁

There’s just the three of us (I think).

Demo bikes and stuff on’t way.

Nick, if they’re any use I’ve a few Rocky Mounts left like SteveM has you can have as many as you need for the cost of hiring a set of some others.

I’ll try and find a couple, but they’re proving elusive!

The Pergrine in the picure above is a 59cm whopper. The more sensible sizes look better.
It’s a great bike for fiddling with as you can hub gear it up easily too. Bags of clearance, but the front mudguard eyelets let it down a little in terms of disc caliper clearance.

You won’t get 35c tyres and guards on the CDF, the geo’s a bit closer clearance than some others. Road 28s, yes, but not a 35c CX and any mud room worth having. It’s probably tighter at the front than the rear.

It can be done, as I’ve done it with some white SKS Chromoplastics. Looked great too. Just trying to find a picture, but you’re right about not loads of clearance in there.

The Cross check doesn’t take discs though – I think that’s a key thing for Kayak/Windy.

Have a look at the Singular Peregrine too. I’ve built a few lately for just what you suggest. Vaya’s too, but the CdF is going to be the lowest cost option.

As far as guards and sensible sized tyres go they wil all cope admirably.

It could do if Steve wants – the forks are still here from when I built it 🙂

Avoid that wheel like the plague. It’s a daft complete Shimano one with not enough spokes, the ones it does have break far to easily, far too often and they’re £5 each to relpace.

    It’s cheap for a reason.

I’ve got some Larry’s and BFL’S. Horrid price though as I had them freighted in from the US.

That Herge was a racist but never realised as I was a child and didn’t understand it was racist or what racism was for that matter!

I learnt not to mix Hegre with Herge when googling for art.

Have you actually looked at the bearings and bearing surfaces, or do they just feel a bit gritty?

I’ve only had to replace a roller bearing in a King hub once (as far as I can remember), just get them serviced properly – ie not just a squirt of lube a wipe with a rag.

Now that a few dealers have a demo fat bike I would recommend trying one out – as many are surprised by them

    This.

Perhaps my mind is fooling me into thinking that the fun I’m having pinging off things on a Pug is the same as the fun I had pinging of things on a BMX – who knows? Who cares? No one really.

This kind of bike, certainly to me anyway, makes far more sense than a 29er, which have always been a bit mleh whenever I’ve ridden them – kind of ok, but nothing special. Proper fat tyres make a huge difference to riding off road, proper eye openingly different, like the difference between riding your favourite trail on a CX bike, then doing the same trail on a MTB. It’s all good, just a little bit different.
You can climb bonkers stuff on them, rock gardens that needed walking up are quite pleasant to ride.

    I like ‘um.

I dunno. I can jump a BMX quite happily, but a mountain bike less so. 29er even worse, but a Pugsley ‘feels’ like a BMX. I quite want to go and ride the thing now, which is a shame as I’m supposed to be building wheels.

Having thought about what it might be, I reckon the gyroscopic effect of the wheels, compared to the length of the bike might be quite similar between a Pugsley and a BMX. Could be a load of old bollocks of course, I didn’t think that long about it 🙂

but these things really do act like giant BMX’s
this is the second time i’ve read a statement of this sort on here in the last couple of days so i’m gonna challenge you on it.
Seriously? How on earth do Fatbikes act anything like BMX bikes? (and I’m not looking for a re-post of an amazing rider riding a skate park on one and backflipping the fun box).

I honestly don’t know. I’m not talking about using one on ramps, that’s as daft as using a road bike on them, but as a tool for popping off stuff, just getting a little air for the sake of it, they are as close a comparison as I can think of. Maybe because my youth was spent jumping a BMX over stuff, it might just be a case of similar amounts of fun on a bike.

Dunno really – it’s weird. Try one if you get a chance though, you might see what I mean. The Moonlander did it for me, but so does the Pugsley, I haven’t had a ‘proper’ ride on enough others to say they’re all like that though.

I don’t get the idea of loading them up with racks and funny bags and all that tat though.

Shibboleth, I too was like you. Totally unable to see the point of Fat bikes. Then I rode one, not on sand or snow, but on dry regular trails and it was amazing. I was astonished – way better than I expected, real proper fun. I’ve not figured out how, but these things really do act like giant BMX’s. Uphill grip is amazing, they pop off stuff enough to give you a grin on anything – try one before you knock them any further. You might be surprised. They are like what 29ers ought to be.

Did you have much hassle/time to wait and was it a frame only or a full build? I used to bring in air suspension kits for cars from Canada and it was always a lottery on being stung on import/VAT/handling. That was a few years ago now so I don’t know if things have changed.

For those that vend I’d be looking at a large/20″ as I struggle with medium/18. What sort of lead time is there on delivery? Feel free to email me if you wanted userworldobject at gmail dot com
Thanks for all the replies so far.

It’s not a lottery, you import stuff, you pay the duty and taxes due – simple really.

You can buy off the peg for ease, get a full, mostly working bike (Mukluik, I’m talking about you here!) or go custom and get what you actually want.

Built this for a guy yesterday…

Tyres landed. A Nate on a Large Marge is 95mm, bags of room in an SC32. Want measurements for anything else?
I’ve got BFL’s, Larry’s and a Rolling Daryll if you need any combination of that lot measuring.

Hullo fatfans, we do indeed have Nate, Larrys and bigfatlarry’s arriving this week. Not cheap though, the shipping is frankly ridiculous. I’ll be getting more of what’s needed soon though.

From my BMX days, if I didn’t crash in practice I new it was coming in the race.

I like to have at least one crash per ride, reminds me I’m actually not very good at this really.

I rode my CX bike around the woods tonight, following a mate on our demo Pugsley. The Pug was simply better at everything, including the slop, where I was expecting to shine.

    Try one, you’ll be surprised.
