Once sent a letter in to Jim’ll Fix It. Wasn’t selected, but with hindsight it still feels too close for comfort!

Thanks sri16v, that was the other route I was considering.

Found the answer in the search function (who’d’ve thunk it):

    Afon Arban, FTW

If if you want to push, carry, throw your bike 4 miles up a river then this is the track to choose

One account of taking a bike up it

Scott Scale would have been my suggestion, but after a quick search will now revise that to whatever you can find in stock that fits.

Or just make do with the bikes you have for now until supply improves.

I reckon SILT alloy wheels would fit the brief, available in mullet config.

Leaving a mobile phone in the car sets mine off every time. Also, vehicles with loud exhausts driving past can trigger it.

Dacia duster or Skoda yeti. Available as 2wd or 4×4. Neither are quite that old yet, but still fairly inexpensive.

I really like the SM comp, never had a volt. Every arse is different so wouldn’t necessarily mean anything to you which one suited me best.

Find a shop that let’s you try them on a static bike if you can. Might not help gauge for longer rides, but you should be able to tell fairly quickly if they’re not for you.

Whether you like the program or not, this is a move that is very worrying.

Maybe if the government hadn’t made taking the piss out of them easier than shooting fish in a barrel, then they wouldn’t feel the need to confiscate the shotgun!

Skoda Fabia ~10 years old, around or below average mileage would be my suggestion.

But probably best not to get fixated on particular make or model. Just look for something that’s been well cared for.

    1. When it’s damaged.

    2. When it’s got a bit smelly, probably after about 5 years (straps are hard to clean properly).

    3. When I fancy a new one / spot a “bargain”.

    4. After 8 years in case of UV damage.

    (I haven’t made it to #4 yet.)

If they want me to give 3 months notice, I’d expect them to give me 6 months to sweeten the deal. That’s how it worked last time I was in that position.

Sounds promising. This will probably be a mk11, which I think has slightly more interior space than the mk1.

    You jammy <insert expletive> OP!

I’m tempted to report your post out of pure envy.😉

Was there for a week last Feb. Feels like the last time life was normal (actually extraordinarily good cos it was in Madeira). Looking forward to a time when I can return.

I’d recommend these guys for mid Wales trips: https://www.mtb.wales/booking

they’re fairly booked up until the autumn though.

Looks like Tom Hutton does guided trips in the areas your looking at as well https://tomhuttonmtb.co.uk/guided-rides/

Wolftooth do exactly what you’re looking for: https://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/collections/chainrings/products/direct-mount-chainrings-for-cane-creek-and-sram-cranks-for-shimano-12spd-hyperglide-chain

I’ve got the oval version and can confirm it works perfectly with 12sp hyperglide. (Looks nice too).

Not cheap, but then neither are XTR cassettes.

Of the suggestions above that I’ve tried, I’d recommend the Spark, Sniper XC or T and Top Fuel. I was in a similar position last June, but wanted frame only so I could swap bits from my Scale to keep the cost down. Ended getting the Top Fuel as that was the only frame in stock at the time. I’m very happy with it. I wanted to try the Epic Evo, but it came out a few weeks too late (the threaded bb would probably have edged it for me, but maybe not the price). If I was in the same position now I’d also be tempted by the Izzo, but one of those might make your trail bike redundant. I’d only be looking at something like the Supercaliber or Spark RC if I was at the pointy end of the grid and wanted every last drop of “marginal gains”.

I’m 1cm shorter with similar inseam. I went for ML Top Fuel. L would have been too big (not enough room for a 150cm dropper)

Inseam is more important than overall height when choosing a frame size IMO.

I use my MTB because that’s all I’ve got. I do tend to spin out on any descents though, which makes the freehub scream. If you stick to climbs or flat rides then that isn’t a problem.

Anyone taken to popping pills and staring at the ceiling yet?

With this Champion’s League style format can we have a Europey League for the 3rd and 4th place finishers? A place to hone their skills against more even opposition? Asking for a friend ;)

I’d say something with hydraulic brakes e.g. the Calibre Cutter, £400.

Definitely felt the benefit of switching to the One Up bars. But I’ve only got the Renthal Fat Bar Lite to compare against. I can’t be 100% certain if improvement in comfort is due to shape/riding position (One Up is wider and has more rise) or better vibration damping, but think it’s probably the latter.

    Bit clunky but works:

plan route on google maps in web browser, (not the app), copy URL and share with friends via IM or email. If anyone wants to modify they then share the updated URL.

EDIT: You can use the App in a similar way by creating a route and using the “Share” function.

You can pay cheques into most Bank accounts at the Post Office (not everyone knows this), I can’t tell you if your local PO will allow you to take a bike in or not, but it might be closer than your Bank branch
